Down Cottage is a delightful granite cottage in an idyllic setting with stunning views across Dartmoor. Part of a magnificent estate built in 1911 for the Jameson whisky family, Down Cottage sleeps four people and offers the perfect mix of luxury and seclusion. Set just outside the pretty Stannary town of Chagford, it’s a great base for walking on Dartmoor and for generally relaxing and getting away from absolutely everything!

About 1½ miles from the centre of Chagford, Down Cottage is set high on a hill with wonderful views towards Meldon Down and the surrounding moor. The cottage overlooks a shared drive to one side of the main house and is attached to an arch that leads to a stable yard. There are no horses now and peace and quiet is assured. The owners live in the main house with their three dogs and guests are welcome to explore the extensive garden and grounds of their property.
The cottage has been renovated with sensitivity and style, using muted Farrow & Ball colours and an eclectic mix of largely antique furniture and quality soft furnishings lovingly sought out and styled by the owners.

Sleeping up to four people, the two-bedroom cottage is well appointed and offers every modern convenience with wireless broadband throughout.
Enter through the front porch and through the main front door into a hallway, off which is a lovely sunny breakfast/dining room with an open fire. At the end of the hallway is a well-fitted compact kitchen with slate flooring. The kitchen has a slimline dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer – and even a wood burner! There is a door to a small side terrace with garden furniture – a perfect secluded sun trap looking out over glorious countryside – ideal for breakfast al fresco! There is also an outhouse with a washer-drier.

Back inside, there is a quirky downstairs cloakroom, with a low door way (5’6” lintel), with toilet and useful space for outdoor coats and walking boots.
The wide staircase divides at a half landing. Turn left and go a few more steps to the top and you’ll find the living room on the right. This ‘upside down’ arrangement means the lounge enjoys far-reaching views out across the moor. The lounge has comfy sofas, reading lights and a TV and DVD player.
Turn left on the landing and you come to the twin bedroom, elegantly furnished in creams and browns, with pretty crewel work cushions. There’s plenty of wardrobe space and there’s a wall mounted TV. The views from this room over the surrounding countryside are stunning. You can leave this room by another door and get directly to the WC and bathroom.

To reach the double bedroom, turn right at the half landing and go up a few more steps. Decorated in Oriental style, this stunning main bedroom has a 6’ four poster bed. There is a flat screen TV and the bedroom’s clothes-hanging space is on its own landing giving plenty of room and privacy.

The bathroom is elegant and well equipped with a bath, plus bath-shower and washbasin. The WC is separate.

Immediately to the front of the house is a small, enclosed lawned garden with a mature copper beech hedge. To the side is a small terrace with garden furniture – a perfect secluded suntrap looking out over glorious countryside.

Guests staying at Down Cottage are also welcome to explore the extensive ten-acre gardens and grounds of the main house, Outer Down. As well as the formal gardens and lawns there is an area, almost like a mini-tor, of moss-covered granite boulders a great place to sit and contemplate, with wonderful views. The grounds extend down to the South Teign River and makes a delightful walk.
