Welcome to Short House, Chesil Beach - FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

On Chesil Beach, Dorset; the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast, SHORT HOUSE is perfect for a 'Stop the world, I want to get off' break. Filled with light and colour; a haven of tranquility with spectacular sea views, beautiful gardens and grounds.

Surrounded by National Trust farmland, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, SHORT HOUSE is in small private estate with a 200m frontage on to Chesil Beach.

Drive through a tunnel of swaying pampas grass and umbrella pines to this recently restored Purbeck stone converted barn. The sea shimmers behind the house and a solemn terracotta warrior stands guard.

Horses graze as you take a short stroll across an unspoilt meadow to Chesil Beach.

Large fully equipped kitchen

High celinged dining & sitting room; bright kilims, oak floors & purple doors. Bold canvases, piles of books & DVDs. Big TV, DVD player and Bose sound system. Lovely furniture with proper squashy cushions. Two double bedrooms with glorious ocean views. Nice cotton linen, feather & down pillows and duvets. Loads of towels (and beach towels, buckets and spades). Stone bathrooms, big tub baths; one with a shower, one with a sea view. Cot, extra bed and high chairs available
Outside dining terrace with loungers. Great for stargazing; low ambient light so the stars shine bright. The lights of Lyme Regis twinkle in the distance after the sun sets over the Devon coastline and Golden Cap; the highest point on the south coast.

There are lovely walks direct from the cottage; in both directions along the beach and inland. Wear's Hill, voted as having the best natural view in England by Country Life Magazine, is about 45 minutes walk.

A private tennis court (rackets & balls provided) is on the doorstep as are the riding stables, where lessons can be arranged. The beach is famous for fishing and birdwatching.

Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens, with a great colonial style cafe, is 30-40 minutes walk along the beach. Abbotsbury Swannery, a further 20 minutes walk, is the only place in the world where you can walk through a colony of nesting Mute Swans.

In Burton Bradstock (5 minutes by car), Hive Beach has a great cafe and good swimming off a sandy beach. Bridport, (15 minutes), is a charming market town with a great selection of restaurants, bars, pubs and shops, including Waitrose. The Saturday street market is very good; lot's of local produce and traders. Catch a performance at Bridport Arts Centre.

West Bay Harbour (TV's 'Broadchurch') also 15 minutes, with boats to hire, fishing trips and the best fish restaurant in the area; The Riverside.

The county town Dorchester (12 miles) has an Arts Centre and a new Odeon; the 2015 national cinema of the year. Restaurants, bars, cafes and shops around the multi jet fountain in Brewery Square, include Carluccio's, Cote Brasserie, Wagamama, Nando's, Zizzi and Pizza Express.

Weymouth (14 miles) is the home of the Olympic Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. The water here is unusually calm, making it perfect for water sports. A number of golf courses are within easy reach.

The A35/A31 provides access to the M3; Bournemouth, Southampton, Winchester and London. The intercity station at Dorchester South (12 miles) provides twice hourly services to Bournemouth, Southampton, Winchester and London (2 hrs 30 mins to London Waterloo).

Exeter International airport is within an hour. Helicopter landing co-ordinates for Short House on request.

There is ample parking right in front of the cottage.

Spacious, spotlessly clean & beautifully decorated

By Melanie McAllister on 29-Jul-2018

Short House is a stunning property in an amazing location. The house is spacious, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. We were met by Julie on arrival who welcomed us and showed us around, making sure we had everything we needed before leaving us to settle in.
We had the most wonderful stay at Short House, enjoying some much needed relaxing family time. We enjoyed many trips to the beach for picnics. Games with the children on the tennis court and lazy sunny days reading and chatting on the patio taking in the magnificent views. It was bliss! Thank you Andrew & Julie for your kindness and for letting us share your home in this beautiful part of England.

A sea of stars in the night sky - wonderful.

By Tracey Herald on 08-Jul-2018

We loved our stay at Short House. Great directions and easy to find, the property is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The property is beautifully furnished with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed stunning views from the terrace over Chesil Beach and out to sea. At night, the sea views are replaced with a sea of stars in the night sky - wonderful. Andrew & Julie took the time to show us around their fabulous gardens which have been designed with imagination and care. Short House is highly recommended and we hope to return!

A magnificent house surrounded by gorgeous landscapes

By Judith Agoston on 08-May-2018

A magnificent house surrounded by gorgeous landscapes, the sea at the bottom of the garden, with not a soul on the beach, even on a wonderfully hot bank holiday weekend. Andrew & Julie are discreet yet helpful and incredibly kind to our children. We really felt at home at the Short House!
Such a shame it is booked out for months to come, otherwise we would gladly return next weekend!

Pootle down the field onto Chesil Beach, or play tennis/basketball on the court.

By Jill Gale on 05-Feb-2018

A lovely property in a stunning location. Well appointed, with everything you think you need.
The house has breathtaking views that reach to Devon on a clear day, and the stars abound at night thanks to minimal light pollution - waking up to see them shining through the skylight in the bedroom was just lovely.
When it rains, enjoy watching the crests on the waves and listening to the sounds of Chesil Beach.
There is a lot to see and do in the area, and if you want to stay in, then pootle down the field onto Chesil Beach, or play tennis / basketball on the courts.
We had a lovely stay and will look to return!

Thoroughly recommend staying here at any time of year.

By Jam Beale on 12-Jan-2018

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Short House with a couple of friends and our dog Hero.
It was the perfect setting to escape the World and totally relaxing. The setting is incredible and we enjoyed walks on the beach and I don't think we've been anywhere where we've seen so many stars at night.
There is a great DVD collection!
Would thoroughly recommend staying here at any time of year. We'll definitely be back!

The most incredible November sunset

By Kirsty Wilson on 21-Nov-2017

Absolutely stunning location with the beach and Mother Nature on your doorstep. Andrew and Julie are fantastic hosts and made us feel very welcome. Despite visiting in mid November we were treated to the most incredible sunset one evening which was a real treat. The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable. One of the best cottages we have stayed in - thank you!

Location is so quiet and relaxing with really good access to Abbotsbury, Bridport and plenty of other places to see.
Our young daughter loved the horses!
Andrew and Julie are really welcoming and great hosts.
The house itself has everything you need with a really nice kitchen, living space and even a bath with a sea view.
Can't recommend highly enough!
