Oxen Fell Cottage is newly renovated and is now available. The kitchen and two ensuite bathrooms are therefore both new. It is idyllically situated in Little Langdale. You can enjoy high-level or low-level walks in any direction from the cottage, or, alternatively, you could cycle, using the cycle storage provided. I am reminded of 'The Shire', the hobbit's country in Tolkien's book of that name, when I look at the view from the master bedroom window or walk a few yards from the cottage and look across at the valley. Little Langdale is now quiet and peaceful, belying its industrial past. One hundred years ago, Little Langdale was known for its quarries, which still scatter the landscape, and Oxen Fell Cottage was built to provide housing for the miners.
Oxen Fell Cottage has been recently refurbished and is both comfortably furnished and well-equipped. The lounge enjoys attractive woodland views and has seating for four across two sofas. The wood burning stove provides that sense of cosiness, warmth and well-being that perfectly completes a day out on the fells. As well as the TV/DVD player, jigsaws of local scenes, games and books about the local area help you feel that you are really at home.
The kitchen has the usual facilities such as a microwave as well as all the cutlery, crockery and equipment you would expect. To make mealtimes a bit easier, a dishwasher does the hard work for you. Four people fit comfortably around the solid wood table, and there is a high chair so that the little ones don't miss out! An ordnance survey map centred on Oxon Fell Cottage hangs on the wall so that you can look to see where you have been that day or rehearse tomorrow's activity.
The cottage benefits from two ensuite bathrooms, so no queues in the morning! The ensuite to bedroom 2 has a bath with shower over, whilst the ensuite to the master bedroom has a walk-in shower. Both the family bathroom and the ensuite have heated towel rails to keep your towels toasty warm! The master bedroom has a stunning view across Little Langdale valley, and has a kingsize bed. Bedroom 2 has twin beds, and lovely woodland views. The beds are of course made up for you before you arrive. For young guests, a travel cot is provided, whilst a stair gate helps to keep them safe.
The cottage has a patio table and chairs outside the back door, and a bench outside the front, so there is plenty of room to enjoy the fresh air. An outhouse houses a washing machine and tumble dryer, essential for those wet days when you have been watching the waterfalls at their most spectacular! The outhouse also provides secure storage for up to four bicycles.
WiFi connection means that the outside world need not be completely lost. A landline phone is provided for incoming and emergency calls for your safety. An iron and ironing board is provided. Heating is by night storage heaters. Several oil filled radiators are also provided for when a little top-up might be needed! Towels are provided. One small to medium sized dog is welcome. Changeover day is Friday, and short breaks are available out of high season. A welcome pack greets you with all the basics to start the week. Whilst the cottage does not have allocated parking, there is on-street parking close by.
Little Langdale is beautiful. Close by the cottage is a superb view over the valley. Little Langdale has a number of sights: Slaters Bridge, Cathedral Quarry and Colwith Force. The lovely village of Elterwater lies nearby, and Skelwith Force and Great Langdale within easy walking distance. Refreshments are available in Little Langdale in the Three Shires Inn, in Elterwater or Chapel Stile.
We loved our stay in Oxen Fell. The cottage is comfortable and very well-equipped. Little Langdale is a beautiful location, and very peaceful and quiet. We walked from the door most days. Fantastic pubs in Elterwater and Chapel Stile were perfect lunch stops. The local pub in Little Langdale also serves good food and local beers.
