The Old Mill House is a charming 18th Century house where John Keats finished his poem 'The Eve of St. Agnes' in 1819 and spent his last night in England in 1820. The house is situated on the edge of the attractive village of Old Bedhampton in a large garden between a 3-acre lake and a tidal stream. It has its own outdoor heated swimming pool. It is very well located for visiting the beaches, countryside and many attractions of the south coast but also provides a home from home for staying in and relaxing. The 8 bedrooms, of which 6 are en suite, all have TVs and views over the lake and/or garden. The spacious main sitting room, with French doors to the terrace and garden, has a piano and overlooks both the lake and stream. A smaller sitting room with TV/DVD has comfortable sofas, a wood burning stove and board games. There is a well-equipped kitchen/breakfast room, a dining room with a large dining table seating 16 people and a conservatory with views over the swimming pool and lake.

- Outdoor heated swimming pool available from end of May until end of September. Loungers provided.

- Dining room with a large dining table seating 16 people.

Location and Getting There:

- The village of Old Bedhampton is between Chichester and Portsmouth, one mile from the sea and close to the South Downs National Park.

- It takes about 90 minutes by train from London Waterloo to Bedhampton station which is half a mile away, and about 75 minutes from London Waterloo to Havant station which is 1½ miles away and where there are taxis available. It takes about 1½ hours by car from central London.

Very comfortable house in a good holiday location

By Norman Barlass on 15-Jan-2019

This was the second time we had stayed at the Old Mill House. It is a very comfortable house in a good holiday location.

We like to cook and the kitchen is very well appointed with everything needed for a large party. Ours was a Christmas stay and the house was very warm and welcoming. There is plenty of space and the beds are very comfortable.

Perfect gem in excellent location

By Alexis G. on 02-Aug-2017

We loved our stay at The Old Mill House. It is perfect for groups / families with plenty of space and everything was very clean. There is even an excellent playground around the corner, 5 mins walk from the house. The outdoor pool was well maintained and we enjoyed using it and the BBQ. Perfect location for getting to the beach at West Wittering, a short drive away, visiting Chicester and shopping at Gunwharf Quays. We hope to return again soon! Thank you.

Perfect for a sunny weekend getaway!

By Sarah H. on 29-Jun-2017

This is the second time we have visited the Old Mill House and it was another wonderful stay. There were 6 families with children of various ages. We visited in June during the very hot weather and the pool was perfect. It is large, clean and was warm, which we did not expect in the UK! Very refreshing when it was so hot. The garden and outside areas are all very tidy and plenty of space for games and lazing around outside. The rooms are all spacious, plenty of bathrooms so no need for families to share, which is great. We found the layout of the house to be very convenient, with the living room near the stairwell so in the evenings parents could listen out for children upstairs, but the conservatory area is also away from the bedrooms so means that sleeping people did not get disturbed. Overall another excellent stay and we look forward to coming back next year.

Excellent accommodation and grounds

By Malc T. on 05-Jun-2017

A group of nine of us had a wonderful time at the Old Mill House, the photos on the internet do not do it justice, The house was spotlessly clean and has a well equipped kitchen, with plenty of appliances. It was great having 2 fridges and freezers . The beds in all rooms were so comfortable it was like home from home. We had the two swans and cygnets join us outside on the lake and were able to feed them by hand. We look forward to booking again, and hope the weather is as good as it was the time we were there.

So welcoming

By Liz H. on 03-Aug-2016

The Old Mill House accommodated our 9 adults and 6 children perfectly and we felt at home the moment we walked through the front door. It's very thoughtfully equipped. We discovered that 6 bedrooms were ensuite, and the other two had own use of the landing bathrooms (one first floor one top). The single is very small and didn't have TV the week we were there. We had a lucky week with the weather and the swimming pool was used every day (there's also a loo and shower on the ground floor for pool users). The house is old so the odd screw and catch have fallen off here and there but nothing that stopped our enjoyment. The kitchen is very well equipped with loads of pans and plates or all sizes plus two big fridges and a big freezer. Most of the bedrooms have a double bed and a single so can be for one, two or three which was flexible enough for us. The top floor bedrooms are sweet and cottagey with good light which you can't tell from the photos. Decor style elsewhere is a touch 80s/90s but very comfortable. Fabulously comfortable bed in the "yellow" room. Lots of board games provided in the cosy small sitting room. Everything lovely and clean. And the grounds are sylvan. Really beautiful, tranquil place to be. And so convenient for Havant shops, roads, rail... No I am not being paid. We had a great time.

Lovely house

By Lizzie G. on 20-Dec-2015

Stayed here for the weekend with a group of friends - total 14 adults and 4 kids. The house is lovely, lots of space and the rooms are all very comfortable. It was nice to have a big dinner table so we could all eat together and loads of oven space in the kitchen to cook for everyone. Really enjoyed having the wood burning stove on cold winter days. Definitely recommend!

A beautiful historic house

By Philip G. on 06-Oct-2015

Our third visit to this lovely historic house, and as good as ever especially since an upgrade to the kitchen. The downstairs rooms are beautiful and well-appointed and as a large family party we appreciated being able to all sit down together around the dining table. If you're looking on a map don't be put off by the adjoining A27 and railway ; all you can hear is the flow of the stream, but the transport links are excellent. The owner is very helpful as are local staff.

An excellent property for a large family gathering

By Dawn D. on 22-Sep-2015

We were celebrating a big family birthday and there were 16 of us ranging in age from 10 months to 70 years old. This charming, historic house was perfect for a mixed age gathering with so many en-suite bedrooms. The house was clean and the large kitchen was impressively well equipped. Everyone enjoyed the lovely, secluded grounds and the excellent swimming pool. The dining room was big enough for all of us and there were two other spacious living rooms and a large conservatory, so plenty of room to spread out. It was nice to have a piano for the pianists among us to use. We enjoyed walking from the house along a traffic-free route to Langstone Harbour and the wild life sanctuary. It was an excellent weekend and everyone wants to come back next year!

What a lovely property

By Katharine W. on 24-Jun-2015

Property dated but that adds to the charm, the home was spotlessly clean, pool was even attended to while we were there. Bedrooms, again dated, but clean and comfortable. Well equipped kitchen, enough to cater for all of us with ease, up to date information supplied on surrounding area. Stayed to attend a family wedding in the area, would consider returning for another family get together

Full of charm and character

By Valerie M. on 24-Jan-2015

The Old Mill House with it's individually decorated rooms with some delightful pictures on the walls turned out to be the perfect setting for our family celebration. With plenty of space we never got under each others feet even on the day it rained. The view from many of the windows was enchanting, the whole setting was very peaceful, we felt secluded whilst being in a very accessible location with many interesting places fairly close by. The number of bathrooms was a particular plus point as was the very well equipped kitchen which was perfect for an outside caterer, we all fitted round the dining room table very comfortably. I imagine in the summer the conservatory and outside spaces come into their own, but while we were there, in what turned out to be a very cold week, the log burner was very cosy.

Great house for large groups

By Jennifer R. on 10-Dec-2014

A lovely large house in a beautiful location. Surrounded by water it feels almost like you're on a little island. The house was perfect for a group of 13 of us with extra beds to spare. The location was great and there were nice areas to go for walks or runs. The mint colour of one of the sitting rooms seemed like a rather bold choice but other than that, the house was great and I would definitely go there again for a similar-type group holiday. I imagine in summer it is even better with access to the pool and more outdoor activities. The owner was very easy to communicate with and there were no problems with sorting out any details. Many thanks.

A beautiful holiday property

By Simon P. on 24-Nov-2014

Amazing space and virtually everything en suite. Plenty of room inside and out for a great family break. The owners were also really helpful with an item that was left behind afterwards in sending it on through the post. Will definitely return here.

Beautiful setting

By CATHERINE C. on 20-Dec-2012

The children loved the ducks, the swan and the heated the pool and the few musicians among us enjoyed the piano. There is a large very well appointed kitchen. We took away the cleaning products, foil, kitchen rolls etc we had brought with us as there was so much there. The property is about 10 mn walk from the nearest shops (grocer, fish&chip shop, chinese t/a, pub) and about 10 mn drive from two hypermarkets. The booking process was very straight forward. The staff looking after the property (manager, gardener, cleaners) were very friendly and helpful. We would take a lot more towels next time as only 1 small hand towel is provided in each bathroom. Everyone said they were very impressed and that they would recommend this property.

Fabulous, Scenic Location for Large Gathering

By Tina O. on 09-Dec-2012

Our weekend was to celebrate two family birthdays and the house was large enough to accommodate us all. It was warm, cosy & comfortable and it's location is absolutely stunning. We were very lucky with the weather and the sun shone every day; every morning spent outside feeding the gathering of ducks and two swans that dwell on the river to the front of the house. We had such a great time that we have all agreed we would really like to return in the Summer of 2013.

Ideal location for family get together

By Bernadette I. on 22-Nov-2012

To celebrate a ‘significant birthday’ our extended family spent a week at this stunning house, with its ideal location, excellent facilities and spacious accommodation. A meal for 21 created no problems due to the impressive array of catering equipment and tableware + many cosy evenings were spent around the log fire. The holiday was a resounding success which we hope to repeat in the not too distant future. We were fortunate enough to have a gorgeous sunny Saturday and made full use of the outdoor pool, sun-loungers and barbecue.

Wonderful family gathering

By Diana Lawrence on 17-Sep-2012

We had a wonderful family gathering and found the accommodation spacious and entirely suitable for our needs. We enjoyed having the use of the piano on several occasions for making music and my daughter and sister created an evening of music and poetry as befits a house with so many rooms named after poets. A good time was had by all.

Excellent Venue for Large Group

By Kate L. on 11-May-2012

The house is very large, so plenty of room to spread out, and nicely furnished. We found it was clean, warm, comfortable and very well-equipped, particularly in the kitchen. There are two large fridges and two freezers - a blessing if you are a big party wanting to store large amounts of food. There is a huge TV in the snug, board games in the cupboard and even a piano if you fancy a sing-song. The grounds are delightful, and there is plenty of parking space. It is quite near the main road, but we could not hear the traffic at all inside the house. Our visit was too early in the year for us to try out the swimming pool, but it looked very inviting and there were plenty of sun loungers placed around it.

We found excellent pub grub a short drive away at the Ship Inn at Langstone and the Sussex Brewery in Emsworth, and Chichester, with its cathedral, theatre, shops and art gallery is not too far away. There is also some lovely countryside to explore, Kingley Vale being particularly fine.

Booking was easy, and emails / queries were answered promptly. Would recommend this property for a large gathering - perhaps a family reunion or walking group - whose members want the privacy of their own bathrooms upstairs, but large reception rooms downstairs in which to congregate and to eat.
