The Whistle Stop is a contemporary beautifully presented, detached holiday home that makes an ideal retreat.

Recently converted from an architect’s studio to a bright and spacious property within the walled gardens of the owners’ home built in c1870, (The Grey House, Cagefoot Lane). The Whistle Stop is located just off the High Street in the pretty village of Henfield, West Sussex. Henfield has an old and attractive centre, with a good variety of shops, cafes, pubs, Post Office, chemist and a well stocked supermarket 'Budgens' which is situated at the entrance to Park Road. Located only a couple of minutes walk from our property is the 13th-century St Peter's church, old inns, a wide and attractive common, and many interesting houses in private ownership. Henfield has one of the oldest cricket clubs in the world, dating back to 1771.

To the south is Woods Mill, a restored mill, now the headquarters of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, its attractions including an extensive nature trail.

The Whistle Stop is tastefully and stylishly furnished throughout, contemporary fully tiled walk in shower, open plan living with views onto the shared walled garden and a log stove to enjoy on those wet and windy winter nights. The Whistle Stop makes the ideal setting for short breaks for a relaxing long weekend, being ideally positioned for exploring the local countryside and visiting Brighton, Horsham, Chichester and many historic houses and gardens.

The Whistle Stop is just a wonderful place for a holiday. We stayed for 4 nights and had a lovely time. It was comfortable, stylish and had everything we needed for a relaxing break. Jo and Gavin have thought of so many little touches that make it a real home from home (albeit a very luxurious one!). It's location is also terrific. Henfield is a lovely little town with lots of amenities and the transport links were great (30 minute bus ride to Brighton every half an hour!). We would thoroughly recommend the Whistle Stop to anyone wanting a luxury break away from it all but with everything on your door step.

By Graham W. Said... on 15-Feb-2018

Perfectly situated just off the centre of Henfield High Street, the detached single story accommodation is spacious and modern. Fully equipped kitchen area, excellent modern bathroom and bedroom. The lounge/dining/kitchen is spacious and very comfortable. Weather wasn´t good enough for us to use the south facing garden and terrace but this would be brilliant in Summer. Free parking directly outside. Jo and Gavin on hand with any help needed.

Stunning, perfect in every way, so well appointed and beautifully dressed and decorated: Date of Stay 9 Nov 2017

By Chris K. Said... on 12-Nov-2017

Soon as you arrive in Henfield and the Whistle Stop your shoulders drop and you feel waves of relaxation . The property is completely geared around you being wrapped in comfort & elegance. Everything is of high quality and has been so well thought out. The welcome pack Jo leaves is lovely , not to mention the cosy robes for relaxing by the fire. Recommend the butchers, award winning. The Plough pub, great food and staff very friendly. In fact, Henfield is friendly, warm and welcoming. I’m almost reluctant to give such a glowing review as is deserved as we want it to be free to book ourselves , however staying in this little gem , you will not be the least bit disappointed. Well done Jo, and thank you!

A modern well proportioned property with everything you could wish for just off Henfield High Street. The owners are very helpful and full of suggestions of where to visit and walk. There are plenty of attractions nearby including Brighton, Ditchling, Arundel (and its majestic Castle ) and the homes of the Bloomsbury set in Rodmell and Charleston. There is lovely walking country nearby along the South Downs Way and Devils Dyke .

Stylish & beautiful: Date of Stay 29 Sep 2017

By Julie P. Said... on 01-Oct-2017

From the very first email contact with the owner Jo, my husband and I knew that the 'Whistle Stop' would be a very special place to use for a whistle stop visit to see good friends. The attention to detail, welcome book/pack, beautiful garden, furnishings and such comfortable surroundings made us feel so at home straight away. Only concern was the slightly difficult parking (only room for one car), but the instructions are very clear, and pictures can be provided. Thank you Jo & Gavin for allowing us the opportunity to visit, explore the lovely village of Henfield (the studio is literally just off the High Street), and this pretty part of the South Downs. We've had a fantastic albeit brief stay, god willing we hope to be back sometime soon.

Wonderful! Date of Stay 16 Aug 2017

By Kathrin W. Said... on 09-Sep-2017

The accommodation is really first class and the layout is just what I would build myself!! The location is great for easy reach of various coastal locations and plenty to see and do in Sussex! There is a great supermarket just at the end of the road - maybe 100 metres with local produce as well and national! Henfield is a lovely village and there are some good pubs in the vicinity (for those who imbibe!!). Would not hesitate to recommend!!

Totally gorgeous property in a beautiful part of Sussex: Henfield is a charming village. Date of Stay 6 May 2017

By Andrew A. Said... on 15-May-2017

We had a lovely week in The Whistle Stop studio. It surpassed our expectations. It has high class luxury type accommodation and everything you need and more. Jo and Gavin were charming and helpful but not 'in your face' so to speak. The garden is a delight to behold. Henfield is pretty and interesting to explore. Everything you need is close by but the Studio is set back, peaceful and quiet. The bus to Brighton is two minutes away and quite regular. West Sussex is very attractive and full of interest for walking and culture. We would love to return - both to the area and to The Whistle Stop. We believe it to be a gem and can't wait to return in the future.

A wonderful Find! Date of Stay 20 Mar 2017

By Malcolm H. Said... on 14-Apr-2017

We stayed at The Whistle Stop for three weeks whilst touring around West Sussex. It proved to be an ideal 'boutique' retreat, wonderfully designed to fit all needs into its extremely comfortable, relaxing studio space. There is a highly attractive garden at the back with a wide range of flowers, and outdoor seating and tables for coffee or a browse. Jo and Gavin were excellent hosts, always there when requested but never intrusive. Our grateful thanks to both for making our visit to Henfield such a delightful one - and we're greatly looking forward to our return, already booked, in a few month's time.

A fabulous base for exploring the South Downs: Date of Stay 11 Mar 2017

By ChrisB Said... on 27-Mar-2017

First off, booking was very smooth with Jo promptly responding to our initial booking request and then sorting out other details nearer our stay. Although at the bottom of the garden of Jo's house, we never felt like we were intruding - the studio has it's own parking & access which is completely private from the house. It's also a very short walk from the main street of Henfield which has a good selection of shops and pubs. We didn't feel there was any traffic noise though, so no problem getting a good night's sleep in the huge double bed. The studio was spotlessly clean throughout and furnished with a real eye for style. The kitchen is well equipped, as is the lounge with a large TV and Blu-Ray player for quiet nights in. It's certainly warm and cosy - we didn't need the log burner at all during our week. The shower is good (can't be doing with something that just dribbles onto you in the morning!). We felt Henfield is very well placed for a base for exploring the South Downs. We went walking a number of times, including the coastal path from Seven Sisters to Eastbourne (get the bus back to the car to save the legs!), Ditchling Beacon and Devil's Dyke. Chichester is worth a visit as a pretty market town and the train to Brighton from nearby Hassocks Station only takes 10 minutes (use your train ticket to get cheap entry into the Royal Pavilion).

A luxurious retreat in the heart of a traditional Sussex village: Date of Stay 10 Feb 2017

By Anonymous Said... on 27-Feb-2017

Stepping into The Whistle Stop is like walking into a glossy interiors magazine. Every detail has been carefully considered and every item chosen with utmost care to create a quiet, contemporary haven that belies the apartment's position right in the heart of a bustling village. The apartment is filled with natural light and decorated with style to create a feeling of peace and calm. The bed is huge and comfy, the kitchenette is surprisingly well-equipped and the luxury bathroom features a hot, powerful shower that's hard to tear yourself away from. All in all, it is a fabulous home from home, situated in the wonderful village of Henfield giving easy access to the Sussex coast and the South Downs. Henfield itself has several good pubs and restaurants and a thriving High Street with many interesting shops. Highly recommended!

A great find - the owners have done a marvellous job creating a hotel-type experience: Date of Stay 17 Feb 2017

By Nicola D. Said... on 24-Feb-2017

We enjoyed our short stay at The Whistle Stop. It's a spacious, modern property and the owners have gone to a great deal of trouble to ensure their guests are comfortable. The 'welcome food basket' (milk, bread, jam, wine) is a nice touch and it's also good to know that the owners are happy for you to get in touch if you need anything. We'd definitely return and would recommend it as a base for longer stays too.

Perfectly situated and well appointed five star accommodation: Date of Stay 12 Jan 2017

By Cristina H. Said... on 21-Feb-2017

This was my second stay at the Whistle Stop studio, having stayed there last August with my partner, this time I was sharing with my sister. We both live in different overseas countries but needed accommodation in the Henfield area for a month so this was ideal and our hosts made the sleeping very comfortable for us by splitting the king size bed into two large singles. It was winter but indoors was always warm and welcoming via radiators, but a cosy looking log fire burner was also available. It is a light filled space when the winter weather allows. The back garden and outlook is charming, with new artificial grass, regarded by a cute and enthusiastic Jack Russell Macy as her playground! Offering doggie treats she became an instant friend and well behaved visitor. The location of this well appointed accommodation is perfect, a.few steps from the organic veg shop, the supermarket, pubs, all supplies one finds in a village, yet extremely quiet and undisturbed. I would have no hesitation in recommending a stay at the WS.

Warm, well-lit, beautifully designed and spacious retreat in friendly small town: stay in Dec 2016

By Anndh2016 Truro, on 07-Jan-2017

Even in midwinter we enjoyed the south-facing, garden view from the sitting room-it must be lovely to sit on the patio in summer. Comfortable sofas and bed, luxurious bathroom, efficient kitchen and a sense of space and light inside which doesn't seem possible when you look at the neat but confined entrance! Good pubs and shops just a few steps away, and interesting walks both in the town and the surrounding, beautiful countryside. We loved our stay, wish we could have stayed longer, and hope to stay again!

Comfortable, cleverly and thoughtfully designed, beautifully equipped, and much more spacious than appears from the outside. Things we particularly appreciated: - Quiet, yet a stone's throw(literally) from the High Street - Lots of daylight - Two sofas to stretch out on - Log burner (though not truly needed even in December) - Interesting selection of books to read - Outside space - A big double bed - Thoughtful and generous provisioning (tea, milk, butter etc) for arrival, and a few nice luxuries for later.

Everything you could need and . all done in style: stay in Dec 2016

By Susan S on 04-Jan-2017

A modern self-contained unit. A 'home away from home' situated in the centre of a small Sussex village. Central and yet quiet and completely private, with it's own secluded garden area. This suite was perfect for me, travelling alone and needing a place of respite, yet would more than adequately suit a couple or a small family - My hosts were attentive to every detail while at the same time maintaining a sense of respectful privacy. Henfield is really a large village with everything one could need within walking distance. Very happy to recommend the Whistle Stop

Perfect accommodation and location: Date of Stay 8 Dec 2016

The Whistle Stop was the perfect accommodation for me. It was a complete 'home away from home' with everything I could possibly need to be totally self contained. Located in the heart of Henfield makes it perfect both for village living and for exploring Sussex and beyond. I needed a place of respite for my particular needs for this visit but could see how well it would suit a couple or even a family - complete with a private garden space. My hosts were equally welcoming and respectful of my space - a perfect balance. I will go back and would recommend it to all.

Had a wonderful New Year break at the Whistle Stop . What a great little find in a wonderful location, for walking, shopping & lovely pubs with great food & atmosphere. Buses to Brighton. The Whistle Stop has everything you will need, a fantastic bed & cosy wood burner. So on wet days you can spend the day inside watching films , playing games & cooking something delicious that you've bought from the local fantastic butcher & green grocers. Couldn't recommend this accommodation enough & would love to come back again. Thanks again Gavin, Jo & Macey

Owners Response:-

Sarah and John, We are delighted that you enjoyed your short break at The Whistle Stop and that you found the accommodation ideal and being able to walk to the pub and shops makes it even more enjoyable. Comfort and convenience: Date of Stay 2 Dec 2016

By Giles C. Said... on 05-Dec-2016

The Whistle Stop is a most comfortable, quiet and convenient place to stay. It may not look particularly attractive from the road side but the owners have decorated the property beautifully and really thought about the things a traveller might need. Everything was spotless, the sofas are comfortable, the shower is powerful and the kitchen has every appliance. The sitting area is very light and there is a small garden where you can enjoy the Sun. We loved our generous "welcome pack" and slept well on the large bed. The house is on a quiet side street but there are coffee shops, pubs and foods stores in Henfield within 2 minutes walk. We especially enjoyed not using the car - taking the bus into Brighton, enjoying a long walk on the Downs LInk and coming back to light the wood burner. I can recommend the property highly if you want to relax and explore this area.

Peaceful, cosy and very well maintained: Date of Stay 23 Nov 2016

By Jonathan D. Said... on 30-Nov-2016

This is a wonderfully located, beautifully built lodging. Jo and Gavin have really thought through the detail - the kitchen has everything you might want and is fully functional, the living room is wonderfully cosy at this time of year (excellent heating but if you wanted it any warmer the wood burner is available). Everything was spotless and immaculately maintained. The shower in the bathroom is perfect for those who like good water pressure after a muddy walk! The village is right on your doorstep (less than a minute's walk to the high street) and has plenty of variety - cafes, pubs, delis, supermarkets if you want to cook and a butcher's and greengrocer's if you prefer really fresh cooking ingredients. The walks nearby having stunning views of the South Downs. Macy is a very sweet and well trained dog - if you like dogs you will love her, if you don't like dogs she will not bother you. I can't recommend this accommodation enough.

Whistle stop is the place to be: Date of Stay 24 Sep 2016

By Philippe & Helga M. Said... on 11-Oct-2016

We stayed for 2 nights in August and the accommodation could not have been better. Great communication by Jo as we enquired as to whether we could book as 3 adults (this wasn't a problem, comfy sofa bed!) We used the village as a base as we travelled around (Beachy Head, Brighton then on to Weymouth and Devon etc!) but would have liked to stay longer. Henfield itself is lovely and we would visit again in the future :)

By Bernadette C. Said... on 25-Aug-2016

We really enjoyed our stay at the whistle stop. Jo and Gavin were perfect hosts. We were made to feel very welcome and on our arrival we were greeted with a generous starter pack and a lovely bottle of wine. The accommodation was very tasteful in decor the kitchen was a generous size and the comforts of home supplied in the living accommodation. Although the garden was shared it was enjoyable and the presence of Jo and Gavins Jack Russell Macy' added to the holiday. Overall our stay was very enjoyable. Our location was also very convenient to Brighton Public transport was also at regular intervals. Henfield village was a quaint place and very friendly. We found very good pubs to eat in and it also offered a variety of shops to meet your needs. We would recommend the whistle stop and we would love to stay longer the next time.

The Perfect Getaway - Impeccably High Standard: Date of Stay 9 Jul 2016

By Ange P. Said... on 18-Jul-2016

You will not be disappointed with this gem of a property. First impressions upon arrival will blow you away; along with the hospitality of the owners Jo and Gavin. They have considered many aspects of self catering and adapted them into this property along with a traditional touch too. You will find the property is furnished to a high standard thought; which will only make it harder to leave at the end of your stay! We honestly felt that we were home from home for the entire week. If you are asking the question "how private will the property be"; rest assured that the property is quite secluded from the main house and unless you want to meet Jo and Gavin for a chat you could quite easily forget they are there! However, they were on hand for us to make enquiries on the local area and the best places to visit. The garden is segregated with beautiful landscaped beds flowing with colour; and there is a patio complete with BBQ with the rental. The property also has a private main entrance and parking for one family sized car. (you will not need to pass though the main garden to the property - this was something we wondered about before booking) All in all we would advise you to add this property to your short list as we are sure it will get booked up pretty quickly!

Owners Response

Hi Ange, James and Zosia, It's always rewarding for us to hear that our guests enjoy staying at our property and especially that you feel secluded although it's a shared garden. Thank you for treating our property like your own and for leaving it so clean, neat and tidy. Also for topping up our tourist information guides to include Portsmouth as there is such a lot to see and do all around the area. Macy misses her cuddles from James! Hope to see you again when you are next in Sussex. Kindest regards Jo, Gavin (Macy)!

Beautiful Gem of a Property: Date of Stay 7 Jul 2016

By Julia P. Said... on 12-Jul-2016

We had the most wonderful (sadly short) stay in a beautifully kept and very welcoming place. A true gem. Everything about this property has been carefully and cleverly put together to create comfort, welcome and the basis for a superb "away from it all" break. Jo and Gavin were incredibly helpful and we loved meeting Macy. We are definitely going to return to this haven of peace, comfort and tranquility. Well done Jo and Gavin. You've absolutely got a winner property there.

Owner's Response

Hi Julia and Ken, Thank you for selecting our property for your short break and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the property and that you found the village met with your expectations and that you hope to revisit us in the autumn. It's 31 degrees today, the garden is full of colour. Hope to see you both soon. Kindest regards Jo, Gavin (Macy)!

A very comfortable and well equipped holiday home: Date of Stay 28 Apr 2016

By Sheila H. Said... on 11-Jul-2016

We spent 4 nights at the WhistleStop accommodation. It is furnished and equipped to a very high standard. The apartment was very light, the bed was extremely comfortable, and both kitchen and bathroom had modern fittings and appliances which worked! We had come from overseas, and the accommodation provided everything we might need when away from home. In addition a very generous welcome pack was provided, plus supplies of some cooking necessities. The location of the apartment was very convenient - 2 minutes from the High Street, where there were 2 small supermarkets, and several pubs. The White Hart pub in particular provides good food. The owners, Jo and Gavin, were extremely pleasant and helpful and we hope to return for another visit. Sheila (Australia)

Owner's Response

Sheila, thank you for your recent review and especially to hear that you found our property comfortable and that you enjoyed your stay with us. We are very fortunate to live in such a nice village with pubs/restaurants within walking distance. We hope to meet you again on your next visit to Sussex. Kindest regards Jo and Gavin

Quality at first sight: Date of Stay 30 Jun 2016

By Peter N. Said... on 08-Jul-2016

From the moment you enter this property it is obvious that a great deal of time and consideration has been given to this magnificent accommodation. The presentation of the property by Jo leaves nothing to be desired, from the welcome pack of gourmet bread and spreads, wine of your choice to the quality of the furnishings and fittings, this is a first class affair. Jo and her husband went out of their way to make sure our stay was most enjoyable, There is a bus stop almost out the front for a short trip to Brighton together with the choice of dining options

Owner's Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a positive review on the website and for mentioning the bus stop in the High Street, which has sparked me to enquire about the bus timetable which will help future guests. I would also like to thank you both for looking after our property during your stay which makes my life a lot easier! Kind regards Jo & Gavin (Macy)!

What a lovely place for a break! Date of Stay 9 May 2016

By Pat H. Said... on 18-May-2016

The Whistle Stop is a very clean and very comfortable place to stay with friendly owners, not forgetting to mention Macy the Jack Russell who visited regularly. There was a very big comfortable bed and a lovely bathroom with an excellent shower. Everything you could possibly need and more was provided. The welcome pack was second to none with wine, bread, butter, homemade jams, biscuits, eggs, tea, coffee and milk. Jo even texted to ask red or white wine and which milk we preferred. The high street is just a few yards away with shops, cafes and pub restaurants. We would certainly revisit.

Owner's Response

Thank you for leaving such lovely comments. It was our pleasure having you to stay and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. It was a shame that you had a couple of cooler days so I hope you put those games to good use! We hope to see you again. Kind regards Jo & Gavin

I want to stay here again! stay in Apr 2016

By Susan M Redhill, on 01-May-2016

I booked for just a couple of nights but then wished I could stay for much longer. This is a very comfortable and cosy property with the biggest bed I have slept in for a while! The owners are very friendly and helpful and they pamper you with little extras to make your stay one that you will remember. Henfield is a delightful place to visit with so much to see and do on the doorstep. Thank you both for letting me stay at Whistle Stop. I really hope I can stay again - soon!

Absolutely gorgeous accommodation with nothing missed out! We felt welcome and as if we were at home as soon as we walked in. I was nicely surprised by all of the little things that were included such as the earbuds & tissues! And the small touches that made the accommodation warming. Loved all of the board games that were on offer and the log fire was just delightful. All appliances easy to use and such a nice use of the space. Bed was so comfy and the shower was lovely and relaxing :) loved how close the shops were closely located but still felt nicely secluded. The owners were always at hand to
