Maison Q is set in a delightful position at the head of a quiet cul-de-sac, overlooking a stream and private woodland, yet within easy walking distance of the shops, bars and restaurants of Quillan, an attractive market town situated on the banks of the river Aude and in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
There are several restaurants in the town, ranging from fine dining to good family eateries (pizzerias and snack bars).There is a twice weekly market selling local produce, and in the high season there is a weekly night market, and occasional free music and dancing concerts. The town also boasts an outdoor swimming pool, and an outdoor activity centre offering several water sports on the river Aude. Additionally, there are lovely country walks, both along the river, and in the surrounding hills. Two recently opened recreational lakes (one fishing; one bathing with hill walks and children's play areas) are an attractive addition to the town's facilities. See photo of Parc St Bernard in photo gallery.
The house itself has:
* 4 good-sized bedrooms (of which two on the ground floor);
* 2 bathrooms (one on each floor);
* a spacious through lounge/dining room, leading out to a sheltered balcony with tables and chairs overlooking the rear garden and stream;
* a spacious basement with garage, utility room and third toilet, giving access to:
* a private pool with surrounding patio equipped with sun loungers and a summer kitchen with built-in BBQ and dining table to seat 8.
Quillan itself is ideally situated for visiting all the Cathar castles, local lakeside beaches, the nearby mountains and the Mediterranean coast. There are plenty of opportunities for wine tasting on the regional wine trails. The beautiful medieval city of Carcassonne, a World Heritage site, is within an hour's drive, and well worth a visit, as is the ancient town of Limoux, home to Blanquette, the original sparkling wine. Also worth a visit are the spa towns of Alet-les-Bains and Rennes-les-Bains, as well as Rennes-le- Chateau and its mysterious history, charted in The Da Vinci Code and the novels of Kate Moss. A good day out for those wishing to enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery and fantastic duty free shopping is a drive throught the nearby hills to Andorra.
The nearest Golf course is in Carcassonne, again an hour's drive away and the nearby town of Axat boasts a great water adventure park
So there is plenty to do throughout the region for all ages - as active or as relaxing a holiday as you wish to make it!
