Picturesque Montferrer village, which is only a short walk, is now appearing in many tourist guides because of its old Romanesqe church and its spectacular views of the valley and coast. Although very small, it has a bar/restaurant, swimming pool, crazy golf, children's play area and tennis court. Locally available are guided walks, tours of local vineyards, pony trekking, 4x4 Off-roading, trout fishing and the professional 18 hole golf course at Falgos. The owners highly recommend a stout pair of shoes suitable for walking as the local signed walks offer spectacular and stunning views impossible to see any other way!

The closest shops and supermarkets are in Arles-sur-Tech, a 15 minute drive.

The ancient Romans were the first people to use the valley for rest and recuperation and were responsible for the Spa towns and churches. For centuries many great musicians and artists have been attracted to the Pyrenee Orientales, the sunniest region of France. In recent times, most of the great modern artists, Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and Dufy, to name but a few, have lived in the area and found it a great source of inspiration, from the beautiful village of Collioure on the coast with its ancient castle built by the Kings of Majorca, to the spectacular mountains. Also, whilst in exile from fascist Spain, Picasso lived for some time in Ceret, a small town at the start of the valley, which now boasts a famous modern art museum. The region is rich in Cathar history and castles and the majority of these are situated amidst the vineyards.

On both sides of the border there are many coastal resorts, from picturesque fishing villages to large towns. Over the border in Spanish Catalonia, which is a thirty minute drive, there are many places of interest. In about 600BC the area was colonised by the Greeks and Phoenicians and they planted many of the vines and olive groves in the region. Of particular interest on the coast are the extensively excavated ruins of the Graeco/Roman city at Empuries. Close to the border is the town of figueres where Salvador Dali lived most of his life and his large home has now been converted to a Dali Museum. Many guide books and maps are available at the house.

During the summer months there are numerous events and concerts of all types. Of particular interest are the classical orchestral concerts in the castle on the coast at Collioure and just over the border in Spain at Castello Perallada, and also, many concerts and events in Perpignan. In French and Spanish Catalonia the activities and places to visit are too numerous to mention, but there is a large collection of guide books, maps, programmes of activities & concerts available at the house, as well as a specially commissioned guide of tours and places of interest in the region.

The valley, although close to Spain and the Mediterranean sea, does not suffer the problems of mass tourism, and is a beautiful unspoilt part of the South of France, in fact, the farthest south one can go - a true undiscovered treasure - the lost valley!

The property consists of three houses built on three large terraces on the edge of four acres of its own woodland. Extremely private but not isolated, The Mas is on the middle terrace with its own private pool and a second house, Villa Olive, is on the top terrace with its own private HEATED pool and its own driveway leading up to it. The owners live in a third property on the bottom terrace and are on hand should help or advice be required, but every effort will be taken to ensure your privacy and make this a very special holiday.

Family Holiday

By James on 21-Aug-2020

We had a wonderful time at this idyllic location, with a stunning view over the valley into Spain. The property had everything that we needed to make it a very comfortable stay. The owners (Linda and Ian) were nearby if we needed anything and always happy to help and advise on places to go etc (although we were more than happy to just lap up the surroundings), but they also left us to enjoy our 'getaway from it all', perfect hosts, thoroughly recommended!

The perfect summer getaway

By Sharlene & Erc on 24-Jul-2020

We stayed at Le Mas for three weeks this summer with our two kids 11 & 14. Staying here felt like staying at a family vacation house. We automatically felt comfortable and at ease in the house.

Le Mas has several living areas and because of that everyone found their space, even the teenagers ! No one stayed in their rooms :) It goes without saying that the pool , garden and BBQ were very much loved during this time. The house, needless to say was impeccable and everything you could wish to have was present.

For anyone wanting to stay in the mountains but still have the luxury of going to the coast, this is the best place to be. My husband and son were able to play at three different golf clubs and do some cycling in the mountains.

Linda and Ian were present when we needed them and their hospitatlity made the visit even more special. Thanks for a wonderful stay, and a special thanks to my little four legged friend Lula, who would just sit by my feet and keep me company.

Amazing stay in an incredible place

By Thomas De Oliveira on 17-Jul-2020

We had the chance to be Villa Olive’s latest guests and it is fair to say this week has been a superb hiatus from the buzz of the city.
The place is located uphill and greets you with an amazing landscape to gaze upon. The house itself is charming, with all the facilities you may think about. Everything is of the highest quality, from sharp knives to soft bedsheets, it has all been given extra attention to make sure you enjoy your stay.
We would have loved to stay for another week and spend more time in Villa Olive as this place is a real gem in the mountains
Thank you Linda, Ian and Lulla for this lovely holiday! You are formidable hosts who made this stay even more enjoyable!

Our September stay

By Derek And Christina Fuller on 22-Jun-2018

We actually stayed in the other villa that Linda and Ian have; Villa Olive. The villa provides a fantastic setting with stunning views and scenery. A short walk to the village of Montferrer in the morning to buy baguettes and croissants provided the little exercise that we would otherwise not have had in what was a perfectly relaxed 8 days. Olive has it own pool which is a bit smaller than the one advertised for the Mas, but it was perfect for swimming (the only other exercise), however this pool was heated which was ideal for September. There was only 2 of us but the villa has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, so would be comfortable for more. The villa was well equipped and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Linda and Ian were there to help if we needed any and were keen to make our stay as pleasurable as possible. As you can tell we rate this place such that we plan to return in 2019 when we may venture out more to explore the surrounding countryside, if we can tear ourselves away from just chilling.
