The Cottage has a quiet country location but is within easy driving distance of all amenities and a wide range of possible activities. A car is recommended but if you are a keen walker or cyclist this area provides plenty of opportunities for days out once you are here.

The Cottage is just 1km, 10/15 minutes walk, from the local village with its award winning butcher and baker, a local food store, pharmacy and hairdresser. Jugon-les-Lacs and Lamballe [10mins] the historic town of Dinan [20mins] are short easy drives away with supermarkets and facilities of larger towns. St Malo & Dinard [45mins] Cancale & Mont St Michel [60 mins] and the beautiful Emerauld and Pink Granite coastlines are also within easy reach.

This part of Brittany provides the opportunity to take part in a wide range of interests and activities. Golf courses, fishing [Lake and Sea], horse-riding, sailing, diving, boating, cycling, walking, music and dance festivals and numerous other activities are all possible and available. Walking and Cycling are particularly popular pastimes in the area with many country and coastal routes available.

Slightly further afield Bayeux, the Normandy beaches, Caen, the Cherbourg peninsular and other historic sites and attractions in Normandy and Brittany can be easily reached in just a couple of hours on roads that are generally a pleasure to drive at any time of the year. Guests often comment on the ease of access to resorts and towns and in particular the availability of parking, often free or at little cost.

The Cottage provides a great base for exploring this part of Brittany or further afield and doing as much or as little as you wish on your holiday.

Outside you will find a spacious patio equipped with a table, chairs and reclining seats together with a small BBQ and associated tools [charcoal not supplied]. Guests have off road parking for one vehicle and separate access to the Cottage, garden area and patio.

From the patio the front door leads to the ground floor living room which is well equipped with lounge seats, a flat screen High Definition television with satellite receiver which provides a wide range of UK and French channels together with a DVD player and a small library of DVD's.
A wood burning fire provides warmth when needed for cooler Autumn or Winter days and nights and is a great facility for anyone wanting a cosy Autumn or winter break when we offer stays of 2 nights or more.

The kitchen is fully equipped with an induction hob, full oven, microwave, fridge and washing machine and is well equipped for anyone wishing to cater fully for themselves. However, there is plenty of opportunity to leave the kitchen and indulge in the food of France and in particular the wine and cider, seafood and other specialties of the region. A wide variety of restaurants are available in the immediate area offering menus' du jour or a wider choice "a la carte" menu.

Upstairs there is a large master bedroom equipped with bedside cabinets, satellite TV with wide range of UK channels, seating, drawer space and a large walk-in wardrobe. The twin beds are set together in a "double bed" configuration but they can be separated to twin bed configuration on request.

Beautiful Cottage with nice surroundings

By N,S&P Buchwald on 08-Aug-2019

My family and I liked the cottage very much. The rooms were clean and well equipped. We especially appreciated the beautiful garden; it’s a very calm and peaceful place to be and we found it easy to relax. However, since we could reach the village so quickly, it was easy to obtain most of the supplies we needed from the local supermarket and the bakery. The villages as well as the cottage, including the garden, were very picturesque places. For reaching the coast or generally for visiting sights and cities, we obviously had to take the car, but the trips were worth it, considering the region holds so many interesting places to visit, such as the old and very beautiful cities and villages or the beaches at the coast. We have the owners of the cottage to thank for frequently providing us with useful recommendations concerning the sights and in general for being very kind and helpful.

Brittany for beginners

By Ruth on 07-Aug-2019

We (husband, 15 years old daughter and myself) had a wonderful, relaxing week at the Cottage. Having lived in England myself, I particularly enjoyed the 'British touch' in the Cottage, including English tea bags and home-made black currant jam that was included in the complementary welcome package. Steve and Kathy are great hosts - something I've experienced before whenever I stayed at British B&B's, where hospitality appears to come naturally and is something to be proud of. The information provided on the website and in the email correspondence proved to be very accurate and when we arrived after half-a-days drive from Normandie, we found a well-equipped and lovingly decorated, homely holiday retreat. There is enough to see and to do within short driving distance, but if you should decide to stay a day at home, the Cottage is cosy enough to do so: bright and spacious, with a lovely, south-facing terrace to sit outside whenever the sun comes out.

Peaceful Retreat

By Neil Shone on 22-Jun-2019

A big thank you to Stephen & Kathy.
Three of us booked to stay a week in June 2019 and we were not disappointed with our choice of accommodation. The cottage is set just outside the village and attached to the owner's property. Maintained and decorated to a high standard with everything you need to make your stay very comfortable. The owners gave us a very warm welcoming and were extremely helpful and on hand with any enquiries. The town of Dinan is worth a visit especially on a Thursday (being market day).
There are some fantastic beaches and coastal villages/towns just a 25min drive away.

Lovely Place to Stay

By Susan And Trevor Peake on 15-Jun-2019

We spent a delightful week in June in this lovely property - thoroughly enjoying and exploring this part of Brittany.. The accommodation is very well equipped and comfortable, and the owners have obviously given a great deal of thought to making it a delightful place to stay. The Gite is situated in a beautiful garden area and the owners are very helpful and friendly. We can thoroughly recommend this Gite.

Oasis of calm

By Phil And Dawn Weston on 05-Jun-2019

We arrived at the Cottage at Les Portes on a wild and windy evening after a slightly fraught journey from Dieppe due to the weather. We were welcomed by Steve and Kathy to their lovely cottage, set in a beautiful garden. (Not that we saw that until the next morning) The accommodation is even better than the photos, especially upstairs which is bright and spacious. The dressing room is larger than our smallest bedroom! Unfortunately our first visit to the area coincided with Storm Miguel so we weren’t able to fully engage with the outdoors but every morning the view from the bedroom was wonderful whatever the weather was like. As mentioned by other reviewers the main bedroom has two single beds which sit side by side but the mattresses do not join together and couples should be aware of that fact. As fans of self catering holidays we have often found some places poorly equipped, that’s not the case at Les Portes.

Should be 6 stars !

By Tanya on 27-Oct-2018

Well where to start ....the cottage was immaculate, spotless, and "homely" cushions, flowers, and an extremely generous welcome package. Fluffy towels ......I will let you find out the rest for yourself. Wood burning stove on a chilly autumn night was delightful and Steve and Kathy were just as warm and welcoming. Situated in the heart of northern Britanny easy access east west and south - perfectly sited if you want beaches or culture. Sitting on the patio with the early morning sun surrounded by twittering finches and tits was a great way to start the day ......to the end as the stars shone and the owls twitted and twooed from all directions. An idyllic place to rest, recuperate and relax. Thank you. We will return.

Autumn break

By Alan White on 08-Oct-2018

You will not be disappointed, accommodation excellent every thing you need, if you want hustle and bustle you wont find it here so peaceful & quiet. Hosts Stephen & Kath very accommodating & helpful cannot fault.
Pledeliac very small and quiet but further afield Lamballe or Dinan have got all you want.
Slightly further to the coast St-Cast-le-Guildo Erquy & CapFrehel well worth a visit.
You wont want to leave but sadly all things come to an end, will be back sometime.

A beautifully presented cottage

By Brennan on 23-Jun-2018

This is a lovely little cottage at the end of the owner’s house with its own terrace looking across the garden. It’s on a very quiet road not far from a nice village with a boulangerie and very good boucherie. It’s very well situated for sightseeing to Dinan, St Malo, the Pink Granite and even further afield. The owners were welcoming and helpful.

The living room is a little on the dark side which has to be expected with such an old house. Upstairs is light and airy with a spacious double bedroom plus a dressing room, single bedroom and excellent bathroom. The beautifully fitted kitchen is excellent with everything you could possibly want. We appreciated the welcome pack with a brioche, milk, water, jams and a bottle of the local cider. The whole place was spotlessly clean and immaculate.

The only thing that didn’t suit us was the double bed which isn’t actually a double – just twin beds pushed together with a gap between the mattresses. We found the mattresses too hard and rather uncomfortable. I had to lie on top of a duvet in order to sleep. And be aware that the parking spot for guests is under a tree that exudes a sticky spray over your car that has to be washed off every day. Otherwise it was a beautiful cottage and we enjoyed our stay very much.

As a couple with no accompanying children we enjoyed a lovely stay. The accommodation was tip top. The photos really do not do justice. Nestled at the end of a characterful peaceful longere set in beautiful gardens. Walking distance from the beautiful local village, the setting is marvellous. Far from being dedicated ramblers we enjoyed many a walk - including a visit to the local buffalo herd which was a very pleasant surprise Stephen and Kathy - thank you for your wonderful hospitality and for allowing us to share a slice of your life. We very much hope to visit again as we were enchanted. D and J.

My Response

Dear D&J, thanks for your review. Much appreciated. It's always good to get guest feedback especially when we receive such great compliments. We were pleased to help make your holiday a success. Thank you S&K

Coquet et plaisant

By Serge M. [France] on 03-Jun-2017

By Bernard G. [France] on 27-Nov-2016

Accueil excellent.

Peaceful countryside setting

By Patsy, Canterbury on 13-Sep-2016

The cottage was extremely well presented and maintained. It is on a no through country lane not very far from the village where there is a bakers and small supermarket. There is very little traffic passing the cottage which makes it ideal if you are looking for a place to relax and unwind. There are lovely views from the bedroom windows. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others.

Rural cottage renovated to a very high standard, in quiet rural surroundings.

By Richard B. on 03-Sep-2016

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay. The cottage was well equipped and set in beautiful gardens. Stephen and Kathy made us feel very welcome and were helpful with lots of local knowledge. It was a short walk to the boulangerie, boucherie and local shop (there is also a pharmacy) in the morning which is located in Pledeliac, a small village. This is a good base for cycling and walking. This is a typically beautiful area of rural France, though quieter than other parts of Brittany, which was exactly what we wanted. Being only 50 minutes' drive from St Malo was a bonus. Highly recommended.

Date of Stay: Aug 2016

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. We have had quite a few cyclists staying this year and they have all enthused about the cycling opportunities in the area and the absence of potholes! Although everyone has been happy with the facilities we provide we are going to install a couple of cycle racks under the overhang of our workshop for guests use next year as part of our continuous effort to improve our service to guests. We won't be offering to do the rides or pump up the tyres but at least you will have them handy and ready to go when you need them!

Lovely Cottage in a quiet rural setting

By Nicola H. on 20-Aug-2016

We had a lovely holiday at this cottage. It is attached to the owners (Steve and Kathy) property, who are a very nice and helpful couple, without being obtrusive in any way.

The cottage is situated in a quiet, pretty village called Pledeliac. It is in a very rural setting, surrounded by fields and forest. However the village is just a stones throw away, plus a visitors farm and a wonderful castle.

The cottage has everything you need. Kathy and Steve provide a welcome pack, which is just what you need, a loaf of brioche, milk, water, Jams and condiments and a bottle of local cider. There is also some tea and coffee available.

The kitchen has every piece of equipment you could possibly want. The stove fire gives a very cosy feel to the room, but we didn't need to use it during our stay as the weather was hot. The sofa although small was comfy enough with big cushions provided.

The main bedroom was my favourite room. The views are lovely from the two big windows, overlooking the fields. It is nicely decorated and very roomy, with a fabulous walk in wardrobe attached to it.

Outside there is a patio table and chairs with a little barbecue. We didn't use this but it was a lovely idea.

There is so much to do in the surrounding areas. You can choose beaches -20min drive, forests - in Pledeliac itself or a short drive away to some historic legendary sites. There ipare also wonderful medieval towns to visit- Dinan our favourite! Also fantastic bike trails along the canal- flat and easy to cycle with such picturesque scenery.

We hope to return for sure.

Finest yet

By Roy on 14-Jul-2016

We stay in Gites annually and can honestly say this cottage is the finest yet. Everything and each detail has been very well planned. There is nothing left to chance, every item is there and is perfect for a couple or a couple with another adult as a fully fitted out second bedroom is available too. The village of Pledeliac is situated well to tour the area and access to Dinan/Dinard/St.Malo are withinn a short drive. A nice village with all the usual facilities. The owners live next door and are extremely helpful with advice and a real plus is they do not interfere at all but i find it reassuring to ask about the area etc. We would love to return over the next few years and have no hesitation in recommending this cottage.

A Little Gem

By Margery R. [Chorley] on 11-Oct-2015

A delightful property on the edge of a charming village, in a quiet and rural location. Beautifully maintained and equipped. Ideally placed for exploring the nearby countryside and beaches .Most everyday essentials can be bought in the village but for a larger shop there are larger supermarkets 15 to 20 minutes drive away. There are good restaurants a short drive way. For more energetic types the quiet country lanes and forests are ideal for cycling and walking. Steve and Kathy were perfect hosts with a good knowledge of the area, helpful but not intrusive.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the cottage if you want a quiet peaceful holiday in delightful surroundings.

Date of Stay: Sep 2015

Superb accommodation in excellent location

By Cristina J on 11-Aug-2015

Very, very comfortable from the walk-in shower, well-equipped kitchen, roomy facilities and fast wi-fi. Totally built for comfort, clean and modern. What was not known before we arrived is the level of utter peace and privacy in rural Brittany but only a short drive to top beaches nearby at sable d'or and St. Cast. We took bikes and loved the easy cycling through the countryside on quiet and interesting lanes and the nearby forest. Normally we prefer beach locations but the cottage at pledeliac was the better place to be. If you like good accommodation, quiet and well placed for diverse activities, beach, cycling, water sports, lake and forest and have either a car or a bike to get around- the cottage is for you. We will return and recommend highly.

Date of Stay: Aug 2015

Owner's Response: It is great to receive reviews like this, we think we have the best of both worlds here "entre terre et mer" but then we are biased! When guests appreciate the location and accommodation we offer then we are especially pleased. Thank you.

Peaceful and Pretty Location

By Helen S. on 05-Jul-2015

We had a lovely week in this very peaceful and idyllic cottage. The cottage was excellent for getting to some very pretty seaside locations and just a short drive to the beautiful town of Dinan. The cottage had everything we needed and was spotlessly clean and fresh.

Date of Stay: Jun 2015

Owner's Response: This is the first year of letting our newly renovated Cottage and we have given a lot of time and thought to what we offer our guests. So we are particularly pleased to receive positive feedback and reviews from guests, thank you. We will continue to seek to offer the best possible holiday experience in what we think is a great property in a superb location.

Excellent French country lodging

By Margette L. [USA] on 28-May-2015

"The Cottage" was a refreshing sojourn in the countryside, a respite from traveling urban area to urban area. A big plus was a parking spot! The freshly renovated cottage had the most well chosen fixtures from lights, to duvets, to kitchen equipment to floor plan. The large landscaped property was complete with birds and plants. British TV was a nice option for the evening. Steve was very handy when we had questions ...like, where are the clothes pins. Plenty of small village restaurants and creperies with very good menus in the area. A beautiful place.
