Pretoria Cottage is a traditional, 2-bedroom, stone-built cottage, offering cosy and comfortable holiday accommodation, nestling in the heart of Swaledale. There are walks straight from the door, many waterfalls to see, family-friendly activities such as horse riding, mountain biking, visiting Richmond castle, limestone caves, a historic railway and lead mines. The village pub and tearooms are 50 yrds from the cottage door. Ideal for couples with pets or a family with two kids (maximum 3 adults). Fees: Daily prices range £50- £60, average £60.
The Cottage consists of a living room with a multi fuel burner, a modern, fully-equipped kitchen and a large pantry/utility room. Upstairs, there is a large, king size, master bedroom with dual aspect windows, offering lovely views along Swaledale. There is also a small bedroom with bunk-beds (the upper bunk is only suitable for a child as it is difficult to climb into, but an adult can use the lower bunk). There is also a shower room/toilet downstairs and a small porch with room for boots and coats.
Guest access: Pretoria cottage is situated off the main road through the village. When entering from the east/having come via Reeth and Low Row, it is on the left about 50 yards into the village. Turn left just infront of Dalegarth House B+B and you will find Pretoria cottage next to it. Guests have exclusive access to the cottage.
Parking: There is off road parking for one car in front of Pretoria Cottage. Please park in the designated spot to allow room for neighbours’ cars. Any additional cars can be parked in the village square about 100 yards from the property.
Keys: With the confirmation of your booking, we will provide you with the contact information for our caretaker. The caretaker can be contacted by phone. She is often out at properties but will pick up messages left on the answering machine and return calls.
The neighbourhood: Gunnerside is a small, picturesque, stone-built village in Swaledale. It has a pub and tearooms, and a fish ‘n’ chips van visits every Friday evening.
Gunnerside nestles in the heart of Swaledale, and from the front door there are numerous walks ranging from the gentle to the more challenging. It is also a popular area with cyclists. The village is 5 miles from Reeth where there are various shops, a bakery, the Dales National Park Tourist Information Centre, several pubs and restaurants, a Post Office shop, GP surgery and an ice cream parlour.
There are many activities and sites in the area, such as waterfalls, the Hazel Brow Farm where you can also go alpaca trekking, Arklemoor Riding Centre, The Forbidden Corner (a novelty folly garden), several castles, limestone caves and caverns, to name but a few.
Getting around: You need to have a vehicle. Although there is a ‘Little White Bus’ service a few times a day that goes along Swaledale between Keld and Richmond, Pretoria Cottage is in the middle of rural Yorkshire and to get the most out of your visit it’s best to drive (and walk!).
Other things to note: Bedlinen and kitchen towels are provided, but please bring your own personal towels.
Equipment for children, such as a high chair and travel cot, can be provided on request (please bring cot bedding).
Mobile reception is variable in the area. EE (and any associated networks) seems to get signal in the house but other networks struggle. There is a public phone in the village. Please note there is now WIFI in the house.
Please note there is no outside space attached to this property but the surrounding countryside is easily accessible.
We provide a starter package of firelighters and kindling and plenty of coal.
The cottage is adjacent to The Garth, another property we let out that sleeps 6.
Pets are welcome, we allow 2 well behaved medium size dogs as long as they stay downstairs. there is space in the pantry room for the pet baskets.
