Nestling at the end of a quiet country lane, 200-year old Lake Cottage has a lakeside location on beautiful Hawes Water Lake bordering Gait Barrows Nature Reserve in the Arnside & Silverdale AONB. This is a natural lake lined with reeds and water lilies and is a haven for wildlife with resident otters, kingfishers and marsh harriers. Deer, rabbits and other wildlife are often seen in the garden.
This characterful gamekeeper's cottage offers accommodation for up to four people, with one double and one twin bedroom, each with long views over the lake to the woodland hills beyond. A sheltered, sunny courtyard with picnic table and BBQ steps onto a lawned garden and small orchard leading to an 80m boardwalk meandering through willows and reedbeds to our private jetty on the lake with its picnic bench and swim ladder. Guests also have the use of our lakeside timber cabin for swimming, fishing or simply enjoying the wildlife and stunning views.
The stone-build cottage has been completely refurbished over the past 5 years, retaining or restoring many of its period features including inglenook fireplace and range oven, exposed beams, log-burning stove and period bathroom. The living living room is warm and cosy and fitted with antique furniture, rugs and original artworks. Our quarry-tiled kitchen is very well equipped, with standalone units, dresser and farmhouse table providing a homely ambience. The store cupboard is well stocked with day-to-day provisions which guests are welcome to use and the self-catering facilities include coffee machine, microwave, fridge-freezer, and range oven.
Located 13 miles south of Kendal, Lake Cottage is 1 mile from Silverdale village with its stores and pubs and 4 miles to the larger villages of Arnside and Carnforth with pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. Ideally situated at the very centre of the AONB, the cottage gives doorstep access to many miles of waymarked paths, woodlands, nature reserves and coastline.
This limestone area on the edge of Morecambe Bay is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers amidst streams, hazel woods and stone-walled meadows. The Arnside and Silverdale AONB encloses large tracts of National Trust land, nature reserves and bird sanctuaries edging the salt marshes and coves of Morecambe Bay. It is a place of beauty and tranquility that has changed little in decades and offers a welcome respite from the busier, more congested tourism of neighbouring Lakeland.
Silverdale is situated on the border of Lancashire and Cumbria with the fells of the southern Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland AONB all within a 30 minute drive.

Wanted to take the family away for some peace and quiet. This cottage was lovely and quiet with a lakeside view. It had walks directly from the door all the way around silverdale and arnside. If you like wildlife this is a fantastic area as well, really enjoyed the birdwatching with the bird feeder outside our bedroom window.
Lovely cottage, highly recommend.

This pretty cottage is just as described on the website. Recently renovated it still retains the features of the old cottage, but is cosy and warm. We didn't need to use the wood burning stove as the central heating was enough.
The basement area is great for arriving back after a day out, especially if you have a dog to clean up. A handy hose is situated just outside for hosing off wellies etc.
The boardwalk, hide and picnic table are wonderful with open views over Hawes Water. Idyllic.
The living area and kitchen are nicely furnished, retaining the feel of the old cottage. Lovely to relax in after a good walk and dinner.
Upstairs there are two cosy bedrooms with comfy beds and a large modern shower room. The cottage was very clean and well maintained.
We had good meals at The Silverdale Hotel, The Royal, Cinnamon Spice and Wolf House Gallery.
RSPB Leighton Moss also do good lunches and is a great place for a day out birdwatching. Our family of four and our dog had a wonderful time.

A week of turning off from the world of wifi distractions and tuning into the beautiful sanctuary of Lake Cottage. Amazing access to the lake. Our kids 7 and 9 loved their dip in Hawes Water with their Dad. Chilly but glorious fun! Such a thrill to walk down the jetty through the reedbeds to the lakeside. So many highlights. Great walks on your doorstep. Feeding the garden birds, sipping G&T by the lake at sunset. Leighton Moss RSPB - great cafe and lovely staff helped us spot the marsh harriers and our first wild otter. Very homely cottage with a fabulous logburner. Shower is superb too - just the ticket after a wet walk! Such a great place to spend a week with my nature loving family. We were all very sad to leave and hope to be back soon.

My family stayed at this lovely place for a week and were totally blown away by this beautiful and tranquil location. The house is well equipped and has that "home from home" feel. The lake is amazing and the whole family had fun swimming in it. There are numerous walks and excursions that can be done from the house and it is only about 30 minutes drive from the lakes. I will certainly be going back!

The cottage is well equipped, clean and very comfortable. We especially loved the garden which leads to a jetty which gives access to the bird hide and lake. We were lucky to have good weather on our visit and spent the evenings relaxing at the picnic table by the lake. It's a great area for birdwatching with plenty of birds on the feeders in the garden. It is also only a short walk from RSPB Leighton Moss. We spent most of the week around the cottage as there were plenty of lovely walks from the doorstep, including Gait Barrow nature reserve. Andy was extremely helpful and provided lots of information about the area. This was our first visit to Lake Cottage but we definitely hope to visit again.

A charming, well situated cottage

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Lake cottage. The location was excellent as was the local environment. Facilities generally good and comfortable. My primary reason for visiting was easy access to the Lake District as ill health prevented me from taking advantage of the many local walks and nature reserves. Would be happy to stay there again.

We had an amazing time at lake cottage. It was the exact holiday we had hoped for. The cottage is so rural, quiet, quaint, clean, tidy and surrounded by beautiful wildlife. The owner had recommended some fantastic walks and local pubs. We tried out most of them and loved them! The surrounding villages are so pretty and Lake Windermere is so close we travelled there a few times.
I would definitely recommend staying here and we hope to be back again soon!!

A little piece of heaven!
By Rachel A on 08-Jun-2016
Wow!! What a delightful cottage and stunning location......an ornithologists paradise.
The description was accurate. The cottage was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for the stay. Special mention for the double bed, which was extremely comfortable, and the fabulous shower. Both much needed after a day's hill walking. There's a handy Co-op at Silverdale, so easy to get provisions too.
The owner was great. We had all the information we needed before arrival and loads of info re the cottage, days out etc at the property. We didn't miss the TV at all, but nice to chill infront of a DVD or listen to music in the evenings.
The hide and jetty were brilliant. We watched a family of Wrens fledge whilst we were there, saw Roe and Muntjac deer and even a Marsh Harrier flew over the lake a couple of times. The jetty was great to sit out in the evening with a glass of chilled wine, and we even swam!
The Indian restaurant in Silverdale was good, but they don't serve alcohol or take cards, so pop to the Co-op first for booze and cash! Also definitely worth going to Wolf House café. They do great coffee and yummy sandwiches and cakes!
Leighton Moss is a must.........and also has a decent café.
This was a great base from which to explore, and so nice to be off the beaten track and away from all the touristy areas. I would definitely recommend this cottage and location for a great break......and I've already told the owner I'll be back.........there's so much to do and see, and we couldn't fit it all in!!!

We're so happy to have found Lake Cottage. This was our second visit to a perfect cottage in an idyllic setting. As the cottage is regularly used by the owners it has a welcoming, relaxed feel - sometimes lacking in more commercial places. It is also spotlessly clean with comfortable beds. We love the natural garden with the willow archway and boardwalk leading down to the lake - a great spot for watching the wildlife on warm sunny evenings, with or without a glass of wine! The woodburning stove indoors is perfect for cooler nights. We have enjoyed many walks from the doorstep as the cottage is at the entrance to Gait Barrows Nature Reserve. Especially enjoyed the walk up to the limestone pavement. We have also had great days out to The Lakes and some Yorkshire villages, all are within easy reach.
We would definitely recommend to nature lovers and anyone wanting a quiet break away from it all.
