Mount Braddon was built in 1827 for a Mrs Sarah Brydges Willyams as part of an exclusive group of Villas on the slopes of Warberry Hill. Originally Sarah Mendez da Costa, Mrs Brydges Willyams was an adoring fan and friend of the Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and on her death in 1863 bequeathed to him the house and £30,000 on the condition that she should be buried alongside him and his wife Anne in the Parish churchyard and Great Hughenden, Buckinghamshire. Now largely restored to it's former grandeur Mount Braddon and it's garden offers all the elegance and style of late Georgian architecture combined with the comfort of 21st century living. Spacious, light and well proportioned rooms provide ideal accommodation for groups of friends or families seeking something just a little bit special for their holiday or re-union.
In addition to WiFi availability throughout the house and Free View television in the main sitting room and all but one of the bedrooms, there are a wide range of board and party games suitable for all ages available for evening or daytime entertainment. Situated in approximately one acre of heavily wooded, private and secluded grounds, giving the feeling of being deep in the countryside, Mount Braddon is just a few minutes walk from Torquay harbour and the main shopping area with a Tesco Central supermarket within easy walking distance for all your self catering needs. The property is excellently sited for those wishing to take advantage of the town’s bars, restaurants and beaches with the opportunity to explore Dartmoor and many of South Devon’s prettiest and most attractive villages and seaside towns within a short driving distance.
Beautiful house, perfect location
By Cheryl on 17-Aug-2019
We were thrilled with all Mount Braddon had to offer for our family gathering! The house was opulent, spacious and practical for our needs. It was a short walk to the harbour and sandy beach, and although a fairly steep ascent on the way back it was perfectly manageable with young children and buggy's. Garry's communication was excellent and gave us all the information we needed before we arrived. We all had an absolutely wonderful stay and will be a holiday to remember for years to come, thank you!
Family Holiday at Mount Braddon
By Sue Platts on 10-Aug-2019
Our family stayed at Mount Braddon this year and had a wonderful holiday. what a fabulous place! There were 16 of us, ranging from 9 months to 60+ and everyone was wowed by the house, its facilities and the massive garden. The house is beautiful and has every thing you could ask for. It is well located and it's easy to walk into town. The weather could have been better but we were all sorry when it was time to go home. We shall certainly go back in the future. Thank you Garry and Angie for our memorable week in your lovely home.
By Cyril Cooper on 27-Jul-2019
Every two years our son comes over from USA with family and we spend a week with them plus our daughter and her family. usually 10 of us.
Mount Braddon exceeded expectations. Excellent spacious accommodation, furnished to a high standard. Although close the centre of things it is in a quiet location. Corresponding with owner Garry was a joy. He was welcoming and responsive. Garden was fun for family cricket and other games - equipment provided. Harbour is ten minutes away downhill, shops likewise. We hope to return in 2 years time. The house was ready as promised for our arrival despite the cleaners having a challenging time having to repair damage by previous guests.
Absolutely beautiful holiday home
By Richard R on 12-Nov-2017
The details do not do the house justice. The house was absolutely stunning and one of the few holiday homes that we have stayed at in the past 20 years that needed no cleaning on arrival. The communication from Garry and Angie before we arrived ensured that everything went smoothly. On entering the house you get an instant wow factor with the impressive hallway and it just impressed more with every room we went in. Garry welcomed us and went through all the workings of Braddons which was appreciated. Parking was no issue and if you have people who know how to drive you can get 7 vehicles in the area. Internet coverage was good enough for 5 laptops (teenagers!) and a couple of ipads with no dropout, thus ensuring no fights between the younger members of the party. There was a large number of restaurants within walking distance but with a steep climb back after eating well. The whole group are eager to go back and visit. Thank you Garry and Angie for allowing your wonderful home to be a holiday home for others to enjoy.
By Peter D on 13-Sep-2017
The house itself was spotlessly clean on arrival. Having 7 ladies in the party it says something when every one of them were impressed with the cleanliness standard of the house. The house is well appointed, spacious and warm. The owners were extremely co-operative and accommodating. We would all 10 of us stay here again in a heartbeat. There is no lack of local amenities amply serviced by efficient Taxi services. If I had to pick one local place to eat I would recommend the Linny at Coffinswell. Wouls I recommend this house to my friends and relatives? yes I would.
Fabulous Home providing a fantastic holiday base
By Robin S on 11-Sep-2017
What a fabulous home. The property was all we wished for and more, it provided a superb setting for a family holiday celebrating our Golden Wedding. The property was beautifully presented and the grounds were fantastic. When reading the description of a prospective holiday home one is always trying to read between the lines as to it's true condition. This home goes well beyond what was expected and delivers in spades. It had everything that our family of 14 could have asked for, from the youngest (4) to the oldest 71 everyone was blown away. The space within and without was exceptional from cricket on the lawn and alfresco dinning, to a dinning room and lounge that easily accommodated our 4 families, with no complaints from anyone. The proximity to the town centre, albeit with some hills, made this a perfect location. 5 stars understates this wonderful home. Thank you Garry and Angie for making your home available and also the first class communications that made arranging our visit a great experience from beginning to end.
Wonderful holiday at your beautiful spacious Villa
By David R on 03-Sep-2017
Wow!! We have just had a holiday to remember in your wonderful Georgian villa. Spotlessly clean throughout, modern ensuites, pretty gardens and lovely spacious rooms. There were 11 of us including our 4 granddaughters aged 7 to 11 who were so excited and loved having the 3 top floor bedrooms to themselves. The large kitchen had an amazing array of crockery, utensils etc and it was a pleasure to cook there. We also had a barbecue in the garden and dined alfresco on the terrace. The pool table and games were very popular. We all loved Torquay and want to return, there's so much to see and do. We had a great day out on the steam train and ferry to Dartmouth, a lovely town to explore. Another day we went to Ansteys cove and hired 3 kayaks, great fun and also a good cafe there. The children loved the funfair and crazy golf on Torquay seafront. Torquay is attractive and interesting with its picturesque harbour, beautiful churches, great rock pooling and swimming beaches and lots of places of interest nearby. We dined at the Maha Bharat twice, great food and ambience. We must return to enjoy the ferry to Brixham, walk some of the coastal path plus lots more. Garry and Angie make sure everything is ready for the needs of each family and their communication was excellent.

Fantastic Family Holiday
By Shaun H on 11-Aug-2017
We travelled down from Scotland to the south coast with family members joining on the way (15 of us in total). We had all looked at the prperty many times on line but OMG it is magnificent. We had a fantastic week in Garry and Angie's palace (yes I meant to write palace). Everything you need is supplied, the garden and outside space is just as amazing, Garry was in contact to make sure the place was ready for us in every respect. Torquay town is but a stones throw away with great nightlife and just a holiday buzz. This was the most relaxing holiday we've had together in a long time and the propert really does make it worth while. Thank you Garry and Angie for sharing your home with my family
Family celebration in Torquay
By Ajay J on 07-Aug-2017
We had an amazing time renting this lovely property for the week. There were 8 adults and 6 children ranging from 3 months to ten years old and we all fitted in comfortably. The house had a wonderful blend of charm and modern features as well as a huge amount of space - all of which were ideal. The rooms are in great condition and the house has everything you will need - even if it rains! Garry and Angie were a pleasure to deal with from the start and genuinely care about ensuring that all of the details are taken care off to make the holiday enjoyable. Thank you both. We were also really happy with our choice of Torquay - there was plenty to do for adults and children and the house is ideally situated with the harbour being a 15 minute walk away. We would definitely return for another family celebration.
Impressive Villa for families and groups
By Michael W on 23-Jul-2017
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The Villa was so well decorated and had the Wow factor. It was very spacious and comfortable and equipped with everything you would need. We loved the garden and the grandchildren loved playing hide and seek.
By Deb C on 27-Jun-2017
This was the perfect place for a long weekend with three generations of family - a beautiful garden big enough for rounders, a pool room for the boys (and adults), plenty of bedrooms and relaxing living space and really well-equipped. It's close to the town and if you don't mind a walk back up the hill, there's a lovely ferry trip between Torquay and Brixham. And on top of all of this, Garry and Angie were the perfect hosts; nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to make sure the mix of beds were perfect when we arrived; they also communicated well before and after (thank you). We all loved the house and would definitely go back.
Amazing mansion for a weekend away.

Gorgeous House and made very welcome!
By Serena P on 20-Apr-2017
As a large family we try to get away together every year and always look for lovely places that can house all of us. We really hit the jackpot when we stayed here. The house is very impressive, well maintained and clean. Its a real pleasure to stay in. We were made very welcome by the owners, and they were so helpful to us. Very highly recommended!

We have just returned from a great family week away over the half term. The house and grounds are very impressive and had more than enough room for us 12 adults and 6 children. The kids loved playing outside and exploring, or playing a game of pool downstairs. The hallway and staircase have the wow-factor as soon as you walk in! The fact most bedrooms have an en suite bathroom (rather than just a toilet) was a bonus with so many of us staying there. The master bedroom has a great walk-in wardrobe/dressing room with plenty of hanging space and (just as importantly) plenty of hangers! That theme runs throughout, the fact that everything is 'well-stocked' really means it's a home from home, but with lots of added extras. We had to contact the owners a couple of times and they couldn't have been more helpful and reasonable. They were also easily contactable and throughout the week. We took the kids crabbing, which was popular at the harbour. There were a few places at the harbour to buy a cheap crabbing net and bucket, money well spent in our case! Also recommend taking the ferry from the harbour to Brixham, another lovely harbour and tourist spot. Very pretty and another popular place to go crabbing! The house is very well located with a short walk into town. Just be mindful of the steep hills back up to the house, although we did discover a lift in one of the department stores, which was handy! A great time had by all! Thank you to Garry and Angie for making it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
Location and Communication - perfect
By Malcolm G on 15-Sep-2016
The question is, "is a 7 night stay in Mount Braddon sufficient time for a group very good friends”? Definitely not. They say a property requires three things location, location, location. Add to that communication, communication, communication, and you have a great house and a great owner. The house is spacious, comfortable and with reminders of its Disraeli past, what is not to like? The property was very clean and just a ten minute walk into town. We had an excellent roast lunch in the Hole in the Wall pub. Visited Agatha Christie’s house Greenway, Coleton Fishacre, owned by one of the D’Oyly Carte family and HM Prison Dartmoor! If ever a reason was required to stay on the straight and narrow, this is it! All in all, a great week.
Beautiful house in a stunning location!
By Susan W. on 10-Sep-2016
It was a very spacious and well looked after house which was absolutely perfect for a family gathering. Everyone enjoyed their stay and the location to town was ideal. The garden was very well looked after and the interior decorations of the house was very tradition yet modern at the same time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to stay again.
By Christine L. on 19-Aug-2016
Just what we needed foe 3 generation holiday. The house is spectacular. Communication with Garry and Angie excellent. Would highly recommend. The welcome pack was lovely. If we are down that way again will certainly try to book again
Our over impression of the house was superlative!
By Daniel K. on 17-Aug-2016
For 4 nights Mount Braddon was the home of a reunion of 8 long time friends. The spacious & comfort of the home, it's historical significance, the beautiful gardens was perfect, providing ample private space and common areas. The property was very clean & well maintained and the owner personally insured we had a most pleasant stay. We all highly recommend anyone visiting Torquay to stay here. It is a pleasant walk into town which has several fine restaurants and pubs to visit along with a harbor featuring daily cruises to other fine points of interest.
Our stay in gorgeous Georgian Villa in Torquay
By Arthur F on 23-Jul-2016
The villa was set in well maintained, flower-laden grounds close to the harbour with all its attractions and yet secluded enough to feel 'away from it all'. The property was very clean with an absent, but very attentive, owner. We had a lot of friends and relatives visit us whilest there who enjoyed the ambience of the house very much. This did, however, present a few problems as there is only enough parking spaces on site for approximately 4 or 5 cars. There were a wide range of activities in and around the area, from playing pool in the games room and table football in the conservatory to 10 pin bowling by the harbour and adventure playgrounds further afield. The crab sandwiches at the Dartington Arms in Totnes and cream teas at Cockington also went down a treat. In all we had a fantastic time.
We are both very pleased that you and the rest of your party enjoyed your stay in our home and that you were able to meet up with and entertain all your friends and relatives who lived in the area. We were though a little disappointed to lose our 100 % record especially as this appeared to be on the grounds of the amount of parking spaces available on site.
We make every effort to be accurate in our description of the house and the facilities available and try to make it clear on the Owner's Direct site that parking is only available for a maximum of five cars. We also always follow this up at the time of the booking with more precise details of the accommodation including the parking spaces that are available both on site and in the adjoining roads.
However we always welcome constructive criticism and comments and will try to make this even more clear for our future guests.
