Nestling amidst the Blackdown Hills, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Devon, is Millhayes, a lovingly restored and extended listed thatched cottage. Happy to accept bookings of 3 nights upwards. Please just ask for price as this varies throughout the year, depending on season.

Overlooking a valley and set in an acre of garden, Millhayes is totally secluded, making it the perfect retreat from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
Ideally placed for exploring the famous Jurassic Coast – spectacular Lyme Regis is less than half an hour away – or walking in the beautiful Blackdown Hills, there’s plenty to see and do. Hidden on a narrow country lane, Millhayes is secluded but not isolated being only four miles from the old lace-making town of Honiton and its excellent range of shops. It is also just four miles from the A303 and A30 trunk roads.

Grade II listed, parts of Millhayes date back to 17th century. It has been expanded and refurbished over a number of years and is now a luxurious retreat, from which to explore the rolling countryside and dramatic coastline, or to just relax in peaceful surroundings. The four-bedroom house is well appointed, combining every modern convenience – a spacious kitchen and dining area and wireless broadband, with traditional self catering cottage features – a log burning stove, beams and inglenooks. With a separate one-bedroom annex, Millhayes offers flexible accommodation ideal for families or small groups. Outside, the partly wooded hillside garden has fruit trees and secluded benches to sit and read and relax – as well as winding paths and hidden corners for younger guests to explore. Millhayes is situated off a quiet country lane, just outside the hamlet of Cotleigh. There is ample parking for up to four cars.

Millhayes has two good-sized living rooms. The family room, just off the kitchen and conservatory area, has two large sofas and windows on three sides with lovely views. Ideal for relaxing after meals, there’s a large flat screen TV and Sky box. The sitting room, reached by a corridor from the kitchen, is at the other end of the house, with a large sofa and armchairs and two window seats. There’s a sound system, while a log burning stove in a huge inglenook fireplace gives a lovely traditional feel to the room.

The spacious and well-equipped kitchen leads into the stunning conservatory dining area, with full-length windows on three sides giving spectacular views across the garden and valley beyond. With a flagstone floor, the kitchen is well stocked with cutlery and crockery and has a range of Bosch appliances including a dishwasher, twin-ovens plus a combined microwave and oven and a separate electric hob. Other appliances include a fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. The dining area has a door leading out to steps to the garden and a sheltered terrace area ideal for al fresco dining.

There are four bedrooms in the main house reached from the main staircase from the kitchen. The spacious master bedroom has windows on two sides, with lovely views of the valley – simply stunning to wake up to. There is a large walk-in dressing room off the bedroom. The snug single bedroom features a lovely white sleigh bed and a built in wardrobe. The window has views of the garden The twin bedroom is spacious and also has a built in wardrobe. The second double bedroom can be reached either through the twin room, (this access can be locked if required), or via its own staircase that leads down into the sitting room. With windows on two sides, this is a lovely, light room with a galleried landing area and, again, a built in wardrobe.

The main bathroom on the first floor is luxuriously appointed with a freestanding slipper bath and separate shower. The bathroom tiles are hand cut, from Fired Earth and there is natural wood flooring. On the ground floor, there is a spacious shower room with washbasin and toilet. It has a flagstone floor while the shower area features Venetian marble tiles with mosaic panelling from Fired Earth.

The Annexe - nestling snugly under a thatched roof and reached by its own outside staircase, the annexe is ideal for anyone who would like a little extra privacy or seclusion. Situated above the double garage, the annexe features a spacious double bedroom with a stunning vaulted ceiling. There is a TV & DVD, and tea and coffee making facilities and a large built-in wardrobe. An ensuite shower room completes this self-contained eerie, equally good for grandparents wanting some peace, or teenagers wanting to escape!

The gardens at Millhayes are a delight. Around an acre in size, with terraces and lawned areas near the house, there are plenty of secluded spots to sit and read, admire the views, or just do nothing. Millhayes is surrounded by a variety of shrubs and traditional self catering cottage flowers and, as a result, there’s an abundance of birdlife. In such an idyllic setting, al fresco dining is a real treat and there is a large garden table and ten chairs, complete with cushions and parasol. The views from the house out across the valley are gorgeous. Below the house, the garden slopes down to a largely lawned area with an array of mature trees including a willow, cherry and apple trees. There’s plenty of space for children to explore and invent all sorts of fun and games.
