The Village

Swalcliffe is a small, peaceful and picturesque village in Oxfordshire on the edge of the Northern Cotswolds. Named after the swallows which visited in past times it is now a designated conservation area and consists of a small cluster of cottages, a church, a pub, a boarding school, a village hall and a Tithe Barn housing a museum of rural and agricultural life as well as a history of Swalcliffe. There are many walks leading from the village into beautiful countryside.

The Local Area

Sweetheart Cottage is situated in a row of similar cottages in a quiet lane where flowers tumble over walls and birdsong abounds. It is a perfect location for walkers, cyclists and families to enjoy countryside pursuits or to simply sit and relax in ambient surroundings. Located on the edge of the Cotswolds, the cottage is an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful area. Footpaths lead from the village, passing through gently rolling hills and beautiful byways. Within easy reach are the market towns of Shipston-on-Stour, Chipping Norton and Banbury, all only 10 minutes drive away. ‘Shakespeare’s Stratford’, is just a 15 minute drive. It is possible to explore the northern Cotswolds, southern Warwickshire and Northamptonshire with ease. A little further afield but still within easy reach can be found the ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford, racing at Silverstone, designer shopping at Bicester, a delightful small theatre at Chipping Norton, Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, and historic Warwick Castle. Swalcliffe village is in an ideal location for visiting many National Trust properties, such as Charlecote Park or Farnborough Hall. Nearby villages are brought to life with country pubs and restaurants. Other local points of interest include stone circles, civil war battle fields, potteries and breweries.

The cottage is just a few metres from the local pub- The Stag’s Head, the church, and a magnificent tithe barn.

North Oxfordshire

North Oxfordshire is a wonderful place to spend time out of doors. Gently rolling hills make pleasurable walking whatever the weather; the fields are always changing, from the sunny rays of oilseed rape in spring to the lavender blue swathes of borage in early summer to the golden sweep of broom-like barley with the approach of autumn. In winter bramblings can be seen, in summer yellow wagtails, and red kites soar overhead all year. Badger, deer and other wild creatures are easily spotted amongst the bluebells in woodland, by the bubbling brooks or with ears sticking out cheekily above the corn stalks.

There are many small historic villages, pretty in warm, honey-hued stone, trailing wisteria and hosting cosy country pubs with pretty gardens and open doors. Flowers spill over garden walls and the clacking sound of horse hoofs is a natural part of everyday life. Market towns are home to privately owned restaurants and small shops selling local produce, hand-made gifts and interesting foods. Farm shops are scattered throughout the area and wholesome food is never far away.

This small and often unacknowledged corner of the Cotswolds maintains a quiet country charm and is a wonderful location to kick back and relax or from which to explore the more frequently advertised attractions of Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwick, Woodstock and Oxford.

We believe in fair pricing; we do not increase our prices for regional events or at 'peak' times, nor do we charge additional supplements for winter fuel.

Sweetheart Cottage

By Jan on 29-Mar-2019

I stayed at this beautiful cottage for a weekend with my two grown up daughters. It is small but perfectly formed and has everything that you need for a relaxing and comfortable stay. We felt that we were spoiled with a lovely hamper, fresh home made bread and biscuits and a log fire that only needed a light. The cottage decor is very tasteful and we enjoyed The White Company bed linen, towels and toiletries. The cottage also has a pretty garden, which was sunny during our stay and is literally a stone's throw from an authentic privately run pub with great food. Even the neighbours were very friendly. It has stairs on all levels, so is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues and it is not geared to young children, but other than this, I would recommend this cottage to anyone and I have already recommended this cottage to my other grown up children.

A blissful and beautiful escape!

By Lucie S on 30-Dec-2017

My husband and I stayed at the gorgeous Sweetheart cottage for Christmas - and it was magical. Valerie (the owner) has created a stunningly cosy cottage, with every little detail considered, especially when you are welcomed with a Cotswold care basket, including fresh bread, butter, honey, wine, biscuits, milk and eggs! What a treat! We would love to come and stay again and make use of the amazing garden in summer months! The surrounding village is super cute, with a lovely pub only a few steps away. The neighbours are also extremely friendly and welcoming. Thank you so much, Valerie, for letting us enjoy your wonderful cottage and making our Christmas extra special!
