The house is secluded within a walled garden in private wooded grounds of over 6.500 square meters. It has a large private swimming pool, a full size tennis court, walled terraces, a barbecue area and a small wood. While Es Ventalls offers complete quiet and privacy, it is still only a few minutes walk away from the village and beach.
The house has an interesting background. It was built in 1942 by the famous Catalan architect, Josep Claret Rubira, on the site of, and using what remained of, the ancient village water tower. He was also responsible for the small church “hermita” at the entrance to the drive and the large Villa “Cuatro Vents” on the opposite side of the road.
Known then as “Villa Claret”, the house was a holiday home for his family until the early 1950’s when it became the property of a retired English diplomat. This gentleman changed the name to “Es Ventall” and was responsible for adding the walled terraces and for the magnificent mosaic of King George VI on the main terrace. He also bequeathed the 1953 coronation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which now overlooks the entrance hall.
The house has now been in the same hands for over thirty years during which time, it has been enlarged, modernised and constantly improved, with great care always being taken to retain its attractive, unique and traditional Menorcan character. It is most comfortably and tastefully furnished and well equipped.
Es Ventalls is a large and spacious house with ten bedrooms, thirteen bathrooms, three reception rooms, various terraces, cloakroom, kitchen and service areas.
This accommodation is arranged over three floors.
The main living area is on the middle floor and is accessed by stone stairs up to the main covered terrace, front door and entrance hall, or by a few steps up to the back door into the kitchen. On this floor is the kitchen, cloakroom, ironing room, formal dining room, living room, covered all weather dining terrace and outside “cocktail” terrace. There is also one double bedroom on this floor complete with two bathrooms en-suite.The ground floor is reached by an internal spiral stone stairway down from the entrance hall as well as from the main ground floor pool terrace. On this floor there are seven bedrooms….. two double bedrooms each with two bathrooms en suite, two double bedrooms each with adjacent bathroom, one further double bedroom with just one bathroom en suite, and finally two single bedrooms each with bathroom en suite. One of the single bedrooms has French doors to the main terrace and there is a further communal french door also giving access to the main pool and terrace area.
The third, top floor is reached by an internal staircase located between the dining room and living room. On this floor are two double bedrooms each with en suite bathrooms and their own balconies.
There are excellent views from all the rooms in the house, either of the garden, pool, terraces or from the top floor, really special views of the surrounding country side and the sea. All the (thirteen !!) bathrooms have windows, have showers rather than baths and constant pressured hot water.
The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, freezer, microwave, large gas oven & cooker, dishwasher, kettles, toasters etc.There is everything necessary for eighteen people plus visitors. There is in addition a separate area with a washing machine, dryer, and additional large freezer. All the dining areas accommodate eighteen people comfortably as does the living room.
Outside there is a large barbecue with adjacent tables and shaded seating for eighteen on the main terrace overlooking the swimming pool. There is plenty of exterior lighting so that the area can be safely used at night. Around the pool there are eighteen sun loungers with cushions, and plenty of shade from four very large sun umbrellas and adjacent wild olive trees.
The swimming pool is very large. Shaped like a grand piano it is divided into three areas, very shallow with steps, medium swimming with steps, and deep with a diving board. The whole swimming pool area is safely enclosed by walls and toddler proof gates.
Es Ventalls is situated on the perimeter of the small and picturesque village of Alcaufar on the south coast of Menorca. In a lovely, tranquil location, the villa is just a few hundred meters, a five minute walk, from the small, charming beach of Alcaufar with its safe bathing and great rocks for snorkelling on either side of the inlet.
Originally a small fishing community, Alcaufar is now more of a secluded weekend and summer holiday retreat for those lucky enough to have a house or villa in the village. There are no large hotels in the vicinity and it is not considered to be a primary tourist area.
The village has a small traditional family owned hotel and restaurant, the “Xuroy”, another excellent restaurant is the Picolo Mundo and there is also a small village shop.
The nearest resort is S’Algar, a five minute drive or fifteen minute walk away, which offers a good choice of restaurants, evening entertainment and a variety of water sports. In the other direction is Punta Prima, a ten minute drive or a twenty minute walk along a coastal path. Here there is a beautiful sandy beach, and a selection of bars and restaurants. Both of these resorts are tourist areas with hotels and all the attractions associated with such locations including a nearby water park.
Alcaufar is approximately 15K from the airport and 10K from Mahon, the capital of the Island. There is a regular local bus service between the village and Mahon which then connects to buses to the airport and throughout the Island. However, while dependable, the local service is infrequent and does not run at night.
Although not essential we do recommend hiring a car during your stay, not only in order to properly explore and enjoy our lovely island but also to help with the shopping !
The nearest mainline shops are in and near the village of San Luis which is a 5/10 minute drive away.
