Coutada Castanha (Coo ta da Cast an ya) is a villa especially well situated in an area of the Penina Hotel and Golf complex, near the beaches and resort of Alvor. The main covered terrace has distant views onto the course, halfway along the 12th fairway and beyond to the 14th green, but the garden is so well established that the tall hedge and trees shield it from both the course and the two nearest neighbours, so it is one of the most peaceful and private properties in this lovely and popular area. The garden is well-established with shrubs and lawned areas, as well as a small lily pond (beware for toddlers) and, though the property is surrounded by hedges and walls, we would not guarantee it was child proof. The covered terrace is furnished for outside meals and there are sunbeds for everyone by the pool. This large rectangular swimming pool has walls on three sides so is both sheltered from any Algarve winds and completely private making this villa a special choice.
The villa itself is elderly, built in 1974, but is well kept and maintained. The rooms are a good size and most importantly there is air-conditioning in the bedrooms and in the sitting room. The furnishings are comfortable, maybe in the 80s style but quite suitable for a very happy holiday. The kitchen has all the usual equipment and there is a built in barbeque near the pool which has a poolside storage room with a most convenient small fridge and loo!
The Penina Hotel and Golf resort has three golf courses (Championship, Resort and Academy), tennis courts and hotel amenities and they are perhaps a 15 minute walk away. The market town of Portimão, with good shopping and fresh fish restaurants (especially good for sardines) is only an 8 minute drive away and it is the same to the popular resort and long sandy beach of Alvor. Praia da Rocha is an inexpensive taxi ride away for some night life and then there are several restaurants within a few minutes’ drive.
ACCOMMODATION for 6 - is all on one floor.
The lockable entrance gates open into a calçada / cobbled forecourt leading to the front door, which opens into a large marble floored hall. To the right there is a cloakroom (with loo and basin) and then a doorway to the carpeted bedroom corridor. To the left there is the kitchen and ahead are double wooden doors to the sitting room. This large sitting room has comfortable sofas and armchairs for 6, a desk, a TV, an open log fire place and 2 sets of French doors to the part covered terrace. To one side there are double grilled glassed doors to the dining room, furnished with a circular marble table and chairs for 6 and even a hostess trolley.
From the dining room a door leads directly to the good sized kitchen which is well equipped with all the usual appliances- fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. The oven is electric but there are 4 gas rings. There is a grill in the oven. There is a locked storage cupboard here for the owners.
There is a back patio for hanging clothes, and storage of the boiler and hot water cylinder. There is also a locked room for the maids’ use.
Back to the hall the carpeted corridor right leads to the three double bedrooms. First on the right is bedroom 3, a twin bedroom with windows to the entrance. There is a fold down, single divan bed here for an extra person if required. Next on the right is a twin bedroom with window to the pool terrace.
Ahead is the bathroom shared by both the twin bedrooms. It has colourful tiles, a bath tub with shower fitting, basin, bidet, loo and heated towel rail.
To the left of the corridor is the main double bedroom with queen size bed (5ft6ins) and a full bathroom en suite (bath tub, shower fitting, basin, bidet, loo and heated towel rail.) French doors open onto the covered terrace where there are table and chairs for 6 for alfresco meals.
All the bedrooms have fitted cupboards and air-conditioning. The French doors and the windows throughout are all half screened so maybe left half open.
Outside the garden circles the house, and from the covered terrace alongside the sitting room and main bedroom there are a few steps down to the pool area, a large tiled area with umbrellas and sunbeds to enjoy the large pool. The rectangular tiled pool is 12 x 6m.; it is 2,2m in the deep end, with a middle section of 1.5m and a shallow end of 0.50m. There are built-in steps at the shallow end with a hand rail to help access for elderlies, and metal steps at the deep end.
Along the far wall of the pool terrace there is a single storey building divided into two. The left door is for the pool equipment and is kept locked. The right door is a storeroom for the pool sunbed mattresses and umbrellas but also has a loo and basin and a small fridge. There is the built-in barbeque and extra tables and chairs on this terrace.
At the entrance there is a car port for 1 car and the gas storage cupboard. The garage is locked for the owners.
The villa is connected to mains water and electricity.
Air-conditioning is at an extra cost of £75 per week.
Water is heated by a gas water storage heater. There is a spare electric storage unit for emergencies.
