Lovely well equipped home in stunning area of Spain within easy reach of gorgeous beaches

By ANN C. on 03-Sep-2018

The house was very well equipped, clean and easily accessible to the coast and mountains of the region. It’s situated in a small, quiet village next to a school and playground with some ambient noise during the day from holiday clubs but otherwise very peaceful and we were out most of the days so didn’t affect us.Easy parking. Easy access to supermarkets and markets within 2-3 kms. Ken has some great suggestions for local activities, restaurants and bars in his info booklet and was very helpful in arranging some of our activities when our Spanish / the systems didn’t allow us to do it. We loved the beaches in the area- both surf-type and swimming beaches and did some lovely walks with great views. The caves at Monte Castillo were well worth a visit but bear in mind the tours are done mostly in Spanish with minimal translation offered for non Spanish speakers which limits your interpretation but still worth a visit as mostly the caves speak for themselves. The region serves mainly Spanish tourists and as a result English isn’t commonly spoken/ written in restaurants which was very refreshing and made us try out our very limited Spanish but added to the experience. Overall a fabulous holiday in a very comfortable house, great host and only 25 minutes from the ferry either end of the holiday so no long drives . Would definitely recommend this place and would love to come back sometime soon.

A well equipped house near beautiful beaches

By Helen E on 01-Aug-2018

We really enjoyed our first visit to Spain. The house is clean and spacious with a well equipped kitchen and is conveniently located for exploring the area, being close to several beautiful beaches and countryside walks. Ken and Belen were really helpful, booking a restaurant for our son's birthday, offering useful suggestions for activities and immediately sorting out the wifi when it wasn't working. Our teenage children particularly enjoyed surfing at Loredo and we had several tasty meals at local restaurants. It's worth noting that not many locals speak English, so we did struggle a bit with translating menus! The weather was quite overcast for much of our stay, but it was comfortably warm. It seems to be an area of high humidity and the dehumidifier in the house was definitely needed. We would recommend this property as a great base for exploring this part of Northern Spain.

agradable estancia

By Carmen M. on 03-Aug-2017

a great stay in a nice part of Spain

By Ludo V. on 27-Jul-2017

We had a lovely stay in the house which was very comfortable and clean. There are a few nice beaches in the environs, and we made a nice walk on the coastal road, whith nice vieuws and a lot of climbing.

The house is ideal to visit the caves of Altamira and the natural park of Cabarceno, with it's elephants and bears and other wildlife.

There are also a lot of nice restaurants in the surroundings.

We were happy that it was not as hot as in other parts of Spain

Lovely home in spectacular region

By Patty M. on 25-May-2016

We loved our stay at this property. It is conveniently located between Santander and Bilbao, and is a great jumping-off point for exploring the beautiful northern Spanish coast and Basque country. The owners had lots of excellent suggestions for day trips, and so we visited wonderful beaches and fishing villages, famous Santilla del Mar, Picos de Europa National Park and the charming mountain village of Potes, Bilbao and San Sebastian and Santander and many other places. The Camino de Santiago runs through the local village and is within a stone's throw of the house. The house itself is very roomy and comfortable, with a lovely garden and convenient parking, and the owners could not have been more helpful throughout our week-long stay. And the food in the region is spectacular! All in all, we highly recommend this rental any time of the year.

Family holiday

By Vera G. on 29-Jul-2014

There were a lot of extremely positive reviews about the house (and Ken) which made us slightly sceptical as they were nearly too good to be true. However, both lived up to expectations. A very well equipped and comfortable house where everything worked (lots of hot water even with 2 showers, the dishwasher and washing machine running) and the owner (Ken) went beyond the call of duty to introduce us to the area, some local facilities and even organized bike hire at an excellent price before our arrival. The area is beautiful - great scenery and stunning beaches. Great cycling and walking. Lots of good places to eat, visit and shop. Excellent!

Clean, comfortable, modern and well equipped.

By Anonymous on 12-Aug-2013

The house is well situated for several activities- beaches, golf, shopping, kayaking, restaurants, supermarkets and a great animal park. The garden is lovely to chill in and enjoy a BBQ. Appreciated the "extras"- a welcome bottle of wine, outside/beach equipment and the owners support in arranging our kayak trip and a local restaurant booking. The weather was fabulous which helped too.

Como en tu casa

By JOSE MANUEL L. on 14-Aug-2012

Fabulous villa with stunning scenery

By Jan H. on 19-Jul-2011

Casa Castillo is a fabulous place to stay. The property is extremely well equipped and immaculate. It's in a lovely part of Spain, which is largely undiscovered by British tourists. There are countless beautiful beaches and stunning views within a short drive. We were a family of 5 adults but it would equally suitable for young children. The owners live very near by and nothing was too much trouble to make sure we had a wonderful holiday. I would highly recommend Cantabria in general and Casa Castillo particularly.

By Caber Dublin, Ireland on 28-Apr-2011

I stayed in Ken and Belen's Castillo home last Summer with my wife and three boys aged 9, 11 and 14. The house was absolutely perfect for us.

Here's what my wife had to say:

"The house was a perfect home away from home. Beautiful location, spotlessly clean and very well maintained. Ken and Belen had thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable.

They were wonderful hosts and gave us some invaluable tips for days out in this stunning part of Spain.

We had a fantastic holiday and the house far exceeded our expectations. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property."

I loved the local knowledge and tips that Ken and Belen gave us regarding what places to visit and what was worth doing when we got there. The house had plenty of maps, information and a local guide compiled by K & B. The highlights for me were the local beaches, day trips to Bilbao, Santillana del Mar, Frias and several trips into Santander. There's loads of interesting places to see but you can also just hang around the local beaches. My favourite was Playa de Ris.

The kids loved the house. Plenty of room and a DVD player and TV! As well as the obvious beach stuff they enjoyed a trip to a local zoo/safari park called Cabarceno that's a must see. We did a trip on the ferry from Somo to Santander that was good fun. The boys loved the diving platforms in Santander. We went canoeing one day on the River Deva on the Cantabria/Asturias border, a major highlight for the kids. Also Decathlon, a massive local sporting goods warehouse store was a big hit.

We ate at several of the places recommended by K & B and they were excellent. The guide that K & B give you is really accurate and up to date on the eating and drinking options.

We were in Cantabria for three weeks and we didn't have enough time to do everything that we wanted to do. We couldn't recommend the area or the accommodation highly enough! We'll definitely be back.
