Villa Alfredo is a substantial property, originally intended for the ‘Squire’ of the village and has a real sense of tradition. Clues to the importance of the property are in the large windows, some of which are stained glass, the marble staircase, beautiful garden, and just the sheer space. The Villa has a real feel of yesteryear, and is dated in feel but that is all part of the Italian traditional theme!
The house is ideal for large families, with enormous rooms, high beamed ceilings, original stairways, enormous windows and shutters, original flooring, and plenty of space to relax and cool off from the heat of the day.
This house is a complete one off - a real feel of Italian living and history combined with a sense of adventure. This village retreat is also wonderful for hide and seek!
The garden, the ‘piece di resistance’ of the house, is unique, with original covered terrace leading from the house, ancient trees and a beautiful covered eating area with plenty of room for 10 guests. The garden offers plenty of sun and shade, and is really just the most perfect place to relax, high above the world, looking down on the stunning views…
Whilst this is a village property the garden is totally private.
The house also boasts its own pool which is situated just across the path from the house, and which has beautiful mountain views. The pool and pool area is lit for moonlight dips and is equipped with sunloungers, a heated shower and a fridge for perfectly chilled drinks!

A little about location:
Villa Alfredo, a 5 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house, is situated at the top of the tiny ancient village of Cascianella, high in the hills overlooking the Garfagnana Valley. The population of this little village is only 12 permanent residents, with a handful more in the summer, which ensures peace and quiet, and safe exploring for children.
The views from this olde worlde village, are amazing at every turn due to its high position, and from the garden there are almost 360 degrees views of the entire area - wonderful!
All this peace and yet only a 10 minute walk or so from another village with bar and basic shop, and less than a 5 minute drive, crossing the river, to a larger village with all facilities including supermarket, traditional shops, some bars, a couple of restaurants, Tuesday morning market when the village really comes alive, a river, and a train station for easy exploring.
The property is located a 20 minute drive from the market town of Castelnuovo and 35 minutes or so from the mediaeval town of Barga both with their various bars and restaurants. Pisa 90 mins; Lucca 1 hr 15 minutes; Florence 2 hours; mediaeval villages everywhere; National Parks 30 mins.
Closer to home there are plenty of little historic villages to visit, many of which have local festas in the summer. There are also the lakes of Gramalazzo, Vagli (with its hidden village submerged by the water) and Pontecosi, and some guests love to swim in the river. Alfredo is also ideally located for visiting the local Fortress at Verrucole which is a good afternoon out, with stunning views and some interactive activities for the children. Also close by is the Buffardello tree climbing and zip wire park (ideal for both adults and children of all ages with a variety of runs) where one can take a picnic and spend the entire day in the welcome shade of the forest.
The real beauty of this area is the dramatic mountain scenery, and the hundreds of hilltop villages to explore, endless picnicking opportunities, and the pure peace of a non touristy holiday ......
There are plenty of dining options to find by car, and for evenings when you wish to dine at home, we can arrange for the owner to come and cook for you (with prior arrangement) which is always a popular option at our properties with such facilities.
Experience real Italy in an authentic traditional village property (the Squire’s house), which has been updated/equipped to give a little more modern twist on yesteryear.
NB - access is through the village and there is a very narrow opening just before the house - fine in a small car, but in a larger car you may need to close wing mirrors. For those that the small gap scares, there is parking in the village.
