Breathtaking outside hideaway in the tuscan hills.

By Michaela D. on 20-Oct-2016

We arrived at night and the house is quite a windy drive up the hill, but don't let that put you off! We were greeted by Catherine and Orlando who gave us the tour round finishing at the pool area, which is even more beautiful than the photos suggest. The house has everything you would need but is more homely and rustic than glamorous and swish. You have to remember you are in the woods and that suited us. Catherine and Orlando are warm hosts who use the house nearby so are readily available if you have any questions or need any assistance. Nothing was too much trouble and they made our stay even more wonderful. The house will restore your carbon footprint as it has a lot of green solutions so is environmentally friendly. We had a relaxing, happy and fun-filled holiday and the house was a good base for exploring Lucca, Sienna and Florence.

A home from home

We had a lovely stay at Gromignana House the first week of October – the house and views are stunning, the beds were so comfortable and with feather bedding which is a nice touch and the wood burning stoves were made full use of during our stay. The swimming area was fantastic and having the kitchen & facilities down there so helpful, although we didn’t get to make full use of this as the weather wasn’t great for our trip. Catherine & Orlando were very helpful and it was great to have people with local knowledge who we could call on. The house felt like a home from home and the gardens were so beautifully maintained, we loved popping out to collect some herbs for our dinner. We did the farm day but I would say that if you can’t speak any Italian it may not be ideal for you. I am quite surprised by the derogatory review below – the roads weren’t that small I’ve been on roads much tighter across the UK! I was made aware of the no jumping in the pool policy when I booked and with regards cleanliness for us it was perfectly acceptable, this is a countryside house and due to the style would be impossible to get into every nook and cranny. The comment regarding the scorpion is just plain silly – we didn’t see any and if we had we would have ignored/removed it! All in all would I stay in Gromigana House again? 100% yes.
My Response
Thank you so much for the very positive review. We try to make the house and grounds as comfortable as possible for guests so we are very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you and your sisters again Catherine & Orlando

Although this house may look great, it isn't. Let's start with the pool. The owners have neglected to remove a bee hive at the end of the swimming pool. The pool was constantly swarming with bees which the owners think are just "having a drink of water". The kids did not think they were cute after they were stung. The owners yelled at us for letting the kids jump into the pool. Claiming the splashing was causing the pump to use too much electricity. Even if that was true, I don't care. I was paying for the electricity that week with rental fee. If there was no jumping allowed in the pool, it should have been mentioned in the listing. The house was fairly clean, but only surface clean. The kitchen looked lived in with crumbs in the cutlery drawers. The top floor bedrooms do not have ceiling fans. It was unbearably hot up there. The house is in a row house. The neighbours are connected, with their balcony less than 10 feet away. If you are draiving, be warned, the road is extremely twisty and 25 mins up. You cannot walk to a town. And you will need to hire the narrowest car you can, with mirrors that fold in. The parking was limited and very difficult. Not to mention the scorpions crawling on the walls. Good luck getting a good night's sleep with those around. When we told the owners about the scorpions, he said that was nothing, "you should see the vipers". A terrible place to bring kids. Choose a place where you can walk to a town, play in the pool and sleep peacefully.
My Response
Our house is located with a fantastic view which you can only get if you go up the road from the valley. The drive is only 10 mins not 25 mins and yes the road is twisty which is normal when going up a steep hill. Nearly all the roads, when you get off the autostrada, are twisty and narrow that is just a part of Italy as the roads were built before the invention of the motor car. The tranquillity and natural surroundings are what we offer which also includes the animal, birds and insects which are all part of living in the country. This past summer was particularly hot and dry which meant that the bees needed water. They came to drink at the pool. They are not aggressive bees and die after stinging, they only sting for defence. There also is no hive at the end of the pool or nearby. As the pool is an infinity pool with a depth of 1.5 mts. excessive jumping, like bomb jumping, causes the water to fall not just into the overflow channel but also onto the land below the pool where there is an olive grove. If sufficient water is lost the pump would run dry and burn out.. We try to help the environment and have installed solar panels, led lights and try not to waste energy as well as save it. The pool is also located in the garden completely private and not overlooked by anyone. The neighbours terrace is 10 mt away from the house (not 10 ft) and around a corner and hidden behind a screen. We have parking for 4 cars, one with no width restriction, the others are no problem getting in and out. I have a Renault Cleo and do not need to fold in my mirrors. As far as scorpions crawling the walls, this is absolutely not true. We do get the occasional scorpion in the house but rarely and never crawl the walls, they are only about 2.5cm long and run away when disturbed. In all the 13 years we have owned the house no one has been stung by them ever, and vipers, we never mentioned them as they are so rare and I have never seen one. . Catherine Litherland

Hill top heaven

We stayed for a fortnight in Catherine and Orlando's house in Gromignana with our young children and had a lovely time. Everything about this place involves going up and down - the tiny village is right at the top of a hill so you get the most incredible views (and we were both training for runs so they were extra hard work!) and the house covers three floors as it sits nestled in the side of the hill itself. It's beautifully decorated, the rooms were lovely and the bathrooms especially luxurious and special. Catherine and Orlando were just a few doors down and really helpful, giving suggestions about places we could visit and also a great sense of security and calm. We even visited a working farm with Catherine. The area is beautiful - we had lots of day trips out to hill top towns, castles, caves, gorges and adventure playgrounds climbing through trees. Then of course we spent a good time by the lovely pool in the sunshine. It would also be a gorgeous place to visit in the winter - there are lovely wood burning stoves and soft sofas to cuddle up on which we didn't really need in the heat of August.

Thank you both for such a lovely and positive review. You all were a pleasure to have in our home and hope you will choose to come again sometime in the future. Our kind regards to you and your children, Catherine & Orlando

Thank you to Catherine and Orlando for letting us stay in their lovely villa, situated in the Tuscan hills. The weather was quite perfect. Blue sky and sunshine for the whole week allowing us to enjoy perfect views across the valley. The villa was well equipped, clean and well maintained, the gardens were lovingly tended and the swimming pool just perfect for both swimming and cooling off. We enjoyed visiting the local villages where everybody was very friendly but other than that spent happy, lazy days at the villa. Would definitely recommend the villa for it's stunning views.

Thank you so much for posting your review. We aim to give people who come and stay at our home the best we can offer so we are very pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your stay. Thank you, Catherine & Orlando

Wonderful change of pace

By Frances Harder on 19-Sep-2014

We spent a relaxing and magical time on top of the world out side Lucca in Gromignana. The house is located in breath taking scenery removed from the hustle of every day demands. The house has been thoughtfully remodeled to include all the modern luxuries and amenities to make our stay relaxing. The infinity pool was clean, private and specials with its own kitchen facilities. There are wonderful walks in the local hills with views of beautiful Tuscany.

This house is quite remote so expect complete relaxation and superb views of the surrounding mountains and hills. You need a car but supermarket, shops, restaurants are within a 15 minute drive and it's still possible to make day trips to Florence and Sienna if you set out early. The layout suited our two families perfectly giving us all plenty of space and the facilities were superb - every detail has been thought of and the refurbishments have been done to a very high standard. The swimming pool and poolside kitchen and bathroom are great. Catharine and Orlando are on hand to help with any information needed - thanks for their help in making this a memorable holiday.

If you are looking for a secluded getaway with stunning views, we really can?t recommend it enough. The property is simply outstanding and is located in an area of breathtaking natural beauty, it was everything we were hoping and more. It?s been lovingly and very tastefully renovated to give it a rustic feel, with spacious living areas. The infinity pool and pool house is where we spent our days, swimming, sleeping, reading, relaxing and eating! The pool has stunning views ? as does the pergola (which was my favourite spot for morning coffee). Catherine and Orlando were a mine of information regarding the area and local amenities and I highly recommend you try their olive oil ? simply delicious! Small mountain towns are within easy reach and the surrounding restaurants are excellent and very reasonably priced. Quite simply a wonderful location to holiday and recharge - very much looking forward to returning.

This really is a lovely place to stay. The views were stunning and the peace an antidote to life at work. We are both still mourning the end of the holiday. The region is not really touristy and near by lucca a gem. Catherine and Orlando were very welcoming and on hand if needed for helpful advice about the area. We loved the pool area which had just been finished this was the perfect finishing touch. I will miss the fire flies which I have never seen before.
