Casa Cappella is close to the city of Lucca and has been modernised in typical Tuscan style. It has a private pool and is located at the end of a small private road. As it sits amidst two hectares of chestnut woods and olive groves, it is not overlooked and has spectacular views down the Serchio valley across the plain of Lucca. The pool, which is for the sole use of guests at Casa Cappella is 12m x 6m and has a deep end with a diving board for the more adventurous amongst our guests. There is also a trampoline and table tennis for those seeking some physical activities. There is plenty of scope for exploration in the woods and olive groves belonging to the property. For ramblers or those who just enjoy a walk it is ideal as there are many walks either directly from the property or slightly further afield. For example it is only a short driving distance to the Garfagnana, an area of natural beauty in the Appenine mountain range. Casa Cappella is conveniently located for visits to Pisa and Florence
If I had to sum up Casa Cappella I would say that it is without doubt a gentle relaxing place to stay and that it is well located for visiting Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa as well as the seaside towns of Viaréggio and Livorno - so hopefully it will be exactly right for your family.
The kitchen is well equipped as I love to cook. There is a large gas BBQ which is always well used and is located with a fantastic view over the plains of Lucca that the chef can enjoy whilst cooking. There is also a pizza oven which our housekeeper and her husband will fire up to cook for you if you choose to have a pizza evening.
The pool is 12m x 6m with a diving board at the deep end. Plenty big enough for a family to have fun together and we do supply some inflatables to add to your enjoyment. The pool is located off the terrace at the back of the villa so is completely private and your enjoyment is unlikely to be heard by anyone!
You are very welcome to bring Laptops, tablets, Xboxes and the tv is a modern one so would be compatible with these. There is wifi in the house but the walls are very thick and so it is only available a short distance outside.
Casa Cappella is a very special place and all who come there for whatever reason remark upon the fact that the location is amazing. The villa is located at the end of a drive with no other properties beyond it so there is complete privacy for anyone when staying at the villa. There are excellent 360 degree views from the property and the pool itself is in an elevated position beyond the villa with terraces before it and another beyond the pool looking out over the gardens and acacia woods below it. Yet another terrace is located on the edge of the acacia woods which is a great place to cool off with an evening glass of prosecco or wine. The night time views are stunning and this was a feature that I was particularly keen to find when I was looking for a villa to buy. If you choose Casa Cappella for your holiday I do not think you will be disappointed.
There are birds of prey around the house - you can see and hear them above the valley and sometimes directly above the house. At night we often hear owls and in the afternoons swallows swoop for insects on the pool. There are many different birds around including the Hoopoe bird which migrates every year from Africa and loves Italian gardens.
Surrounding the villa there are olive groves, chestnut woods, acacia woods and a wild flower meadow and you are free to explore them all - in total about ten acres. There are also three different species of deer which you may be lucky enough to see as well as foxes and porcupines.
The villa is very private as it is at the end of a drive and is the only property there. The neighbours house is at the beginning of the drive and they are also our friends who look after the villa and yourselves if you need any help whilst you are staying.

Rustic villa with amazing views

By Joanne Pearson on 02-Sep-2019

Family of five stayed here for 11 days in September 2019. Valerie was exceptionally helpful prior to our departure; she always responded very quickly to any queries. I recommend arriving in daylight as the property is not easy to find and the drive up the hill takes some getting used to. The villa is rustic and spacious. It is clean and well equipped. The garden and pool area are beautiful; very quiet and private. We enjoyed day trips to Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Cinque Terre as well as two meals at Bar Tosca. We also enjoyed walking up to Croci di Brancoli from the villa for wonderful views and some games of table tennis.

Exceptional Property 5/5 Stayed ‎Jun‎ ‎2018 Sarah D.

By Sarah D, on 18-Aug-2018

Casa Capella exceeded all our expectations, providing us with a lovely villa and amazing outdoor space in a secluded location. The drive up the hillside to get to the property was very worthwhile and rewarded one with the most spectacular views. The property was clean and very well presented and the housekeeper was very helpful and welcoming. On our stay, on a couple of occasions we visited a small restaurant just over the hill called Bar Tosca, which served delicious food with wonderful service. We would highly recommend this property, and of the many villas we've stayed in, it has suited us the best.

Fantastic villa near Lucca

By Jennifer M. on 12-Aug-2018

We loved this villa. Perfect for family of 5 as each of the three kids had their own bedroom. Would be comfortable with more people as there are three bathrooms. Loved the pool. Great views of the valley. Surrounded by trees and orchards, quiet. Loved the old tiny church right on the property (not in active use). The trampoline was fun for the kids. The kitchen was well appointed. Lots of seating for dinner and in living room. Christina who takes care of the place made an amazing dinner of over 10 courses. It was fantastic. I would highly recommend having a dinner at home but make sure you are hungry. The two restaurants nearby are great. Otherwise it is 20 min drive to grocery and Lucca. The road up is 11 min of switchbacks on a narrow road so you need to be a confident driver. But the views and setting are well worth it. I would definitely book this again.

The first thing I would like to say about Casa Capella is that you will never have such an amazing 'owner/host' as Valerie. From even before we booked, she was incredibly helpful, answering queries and assisting with enquiries. Whilst we were at the property she was never more than an email or call away, and nothing was too much trouble for her, even when we got into terrible difficulties with the local garbage disposal system. When she heard our son was interested in the Gothic Line which runs through the property, she even organised a private tour for him with a local expert and interpreter. Thank you Valerie for your unending patience, kindness and help. You are a star! Now, Casa Capella itself. It is an amazing place. Inside it is very clean, and well furnished, with spacious rooms throughout, and plenty of seating downstairs. My son took his Xbox and had no difficulties connecting it to the modern TV, and wifi works well inside. The kitchen is fully equipped, and unlike many Italian rental kitchens, there is a full size 5 ring gas hob and full fan oven. It is a kitchen you can actually cook in, not just reheat frozen meals in. Bedrooms are comfortable with plenty of storage space. Bathrooms are modern and towels are plentiful. Outside, the pool is huge, and very well designed and maintained. Lots of thought has gone into both its construction, butting into the hillside, and the machinery it uses- no cloudy water from inadequate filtration, for instance. The deep end is deep, - we never did work out just how deep! but with older kids and confident swimmers this is a positive bonus. The diving board is a real treat. The gardens are very large and we thoroughly enjoyed our walks around them and through the woods. It is a wonderfully quiet place, with amazing views in all directions. We were initially concerned that it might be a bit too isolated, but very soon we came to appreciate the peace so much so we preferred to just stay in rather than rush around with all our planned sightseeing excursions. We didn't regret that decision. Others have mentioned the roads- yes, they are terrifying at first, and it does take much longer than you would think to get into Lucca the first couple of times, but the locals were patient and kind drivers, and we got a sense of achievement every time we got home in one piece! A wonderful holiday in a delightful place. We really didn't want to come home, which, I guess, is the ultimate tribute!

A perfect holiday villa for us, with everything we could have wanted - the piano was a bonus. Valerie was an excellent hostess, Cristina accommodated all our requests and is an excellent cook too. We particularly enjoyed walking in the Apenines and could have stayed the whole summer. Highly recommended.

Response
I was delighted to hear that the piano was a considered a bonus and was well used by these guests. Cristina's pizza evenings are always a success - delicious food and plenty of it. The area is certainly great for walking whether you choose to walk in the area immediately surrounding the villa or choose to venture further into the beautiful Garfagnana and the Appenines you will not be disappointed.

We have had an absolute perfect stay at Casa Capella! The location is quiet and the views are great. The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking our own meals. We also enjoyed the pool, trampoline and table tennis. We went to restaurant Tosca on two occasions and A'Palazzo on one occasion- both great value and experience. We visited Lucca and Viareggio and also went for a hike to the nearby Croce di Brancoli. Valerie the owner was very helpful and pleasant and Cristina the housekeeper was truly friendly. Thank you for a wonderful stay. I hope we will be back soon.

My Response
Thank you to Mari and her family for being great guests. They looked after the villa as if it was their own. We would be very happy to welcome them back for another visit at any time. It is lovely to hear that they enjoyed meals at both Da Tosca and A'Palazzo. These are both restaurants run by local people who are friendly and helpful to all our guests. The food is typical of the region and delicious as well as priced very reasonably. Also good to hear that Cristina was appreciated as she works hard to ensure that Casa Cappella is always cleaned to a high standard and will always be on hand to assist should there be any request from our guests for help however large or small.

Lovely stone built farmhouse with exposed beams. Large well equipped kitchen, modern bathrooms. Great grounds with large swimming pool and fantastic views. Lots of places to sit outside. Definitely one of the best villas we have rented. Would be really good for two families. We ate al fresco the whole week. The access for the last few km is very narrow and winding with steep drops, not suitable for inexperienced drivers. Do not recommend a wide hire car (SUV). There are two restaurants within walking distance, both amazing value, probably best to book.

My Response
Thanks to Colin for a great description recommending Casa Cappella for the location and facilities provided. It has a terrace with great views which, as Colin said, enables guests to eat al fresco most days. It is certainly a suitable villa for two families to share and there are several areas including two further terrace for relaxing and sunbathing so it would never feel crowded. The access is good and delivery lorries have accessed the villa on many occasions. There is an option for parking at the beginning of the drive but we have had large parties who have been happy to drive multi occupancy vehicles right up to the villa. We drive a large E class Mercedes Estate and there is room to park several vehicles and also plenty of turning room. The drive up is definitely worth it once you arrive and experience the amazing views from Casa Cappella.

Hi Valerie Just to let you know, we had a great time at Casa Capella and really enjoyed the pool and the wonderful views over Lucca by day and night. Thank you for the present and arranging for the birthday cake at the bar de Tosca. Paulo is a great character and we had 4 visits there sitting on the terrace eating pizzas, drinking beer and taking in the wonderful views. We visited Lucca and Pisa whilst we were there and also took the train into Florence for the day. We loved the area and would like to go back at some time in the future. Christina was also very good and helpful. Kind regards Mike

"Casa Capella is a magnificant getaway spot, and surpassed all of our expectations. The villa is situated at the very top of the hillside, overlooking the beautiful Tuscan landscape, homes, and towns below. The description doesn't begin to describe all of its beauty and charm. The views from the property (especially at night when all lit up) were absolutely breathtaking. The home is very charming, and we very much enjoyed the use of the large pool, trampoline, beautiful grounds, etc. The villa even has it's very own church. We thoroughly enjoyed eating at the local bar, which is a pituresque 15-20 minute walk from the property. Not only was the food amazing (and very reasonably priced), but getting a first hand look at the local culture and community, is something that we felt very lucky to have experienced - we only wished we had gone sooner! The villa is situated in a very good spot to explore other surrounding areas like the mountainous region of Garfagnana (Barga, especially was a very beautiful town), Lucca, Cinque Terre, Pisa, etc. The villa was clean, well cared for, provided all the ammenities needed, and felt very homey. A highlight of the experience was the authentic Italian dinner that was cooked for us by Casa Capella's housekeeper Christina. It is an absolute must (make sure you come hungry!) Christina must have been preparing for 2 days straight to have made that fantastic meal. We had an amazing stay at Casa Capella, and hopefully we will be lucky enough to find ourselves there again. Thank-you so much for the wonderful experience!”

We have stayed in a few lovely villas and locations in the past but have to say that Casa Capella surpassed them all. The villa interior is extremely comfortable and well-furnished but it is the outside area that is especially stunning. The views down into Lucca and across the hills are fantastic; the grounds are beautiful with a ruined church, olive trees, sun-bathing decks and shady areas should they be needed. The pool itself is large with a deep-end and diving board and was extremely well-used by us all. The location was perfect for us, the road up can take a little getting used to but is then great fun! Lucca is a very short drive away and is a truly lovely city and we also managed to visit Viareggio , Florence and the mountains very easily (all within 75 minutes drive). There is a local restaurant about 15 minutes walk from the villa and although we were often the only tourists we found the staff to be delightful and were welcomed every time we visited. The food was extremely tasty and the prices very reasonable. Christina and Alessandro hosted a pizza evening for us at the villa and it was just perfect, the food was amazing and it was a real experience to see it all being prepared and cooked. Christina was lovely throughout our whole stay as was Valerie. We had one issue with the water while we were there (totally our fault) and an e-mail to Valerie was answered within minutes and Christina turned up at the house a few minutes later to assist. They were really helpful before, during and after our stay and nothing was too much trouble. We all relaxed totally whilst there and were very upset to have to leave and return to reality. We would love to visit again.

Well equipped home and fabulous swimming pool. Amazing views of the valley below. We all enjoyed having the pool as the temperature rose to 41C on a few days. The drive up to the villa is best taken in daylight, so we spent several days relaxing by the pool and several visiting Lucca and Florence and the surrounding area. The local restaurant Bar Tosca was excellent for an evening meal and we went twice, walking over the mountain

If you want to 'get-away-from-it-all' amongst breathtaking scenery with fantastic far reaching views this is for you!! The pool is stunning - being a good size and depth, complete with diving board. We were a party of two families, with a baby and two four year olds - the pool, trampoline, table tennis room, lovely walks, not to mention the spacious villa was perfect for us. The pizza evening was wonderful and great value! Thank-you to Valerie and Christina for such a wonderful holiday - we would love to return one day!

A most enjoyable stay in this delightful villa. We have stayed in many villas and apartments across Europe and Casa Cappella ranks very highly -great location, great accommodation, wonderful terrace and pool, terrific views, is very well equipped and furnished, and also the owner Valerie's support during our travel problems was excellent. We even enjoyed the hairpin bends to get up the hill to the villa! We also had a delicious -and gargantuan- pizza 'feast' cooked in the pizza oven on the terrace by Cristina and Alessandro.

My Response
I am always pleased to hear that guests have enjoyed their stay at Casa Cappella and where there are problems I am always available to assist in any way that I can. I am delighted that Richard and his family did not allow the flight cancellation to spoil their holiday. The pizza evening is indeed a feast and very good value as I can confirm having experienced it myself. It is great fun to see the outside pizza oven being fired up by Cristina and Alessandro and then to watch how they cook the pizzas. Even better is eating them as they are delicious. A truly Italian experience. Another possibility if you are not a pizza lover is the traditional Tuscan meal again cooked by Cristina and Alessandro which is a delicious way to experience real Italian cuisine. Nothing for you to do except enjoy the views, the ambience and the food while someone else does all the work!

This beautiful villa offers the ultimate Tuscan experience. High up in the peaceful hills above Lucca this traditional stone villa is nestled amongst olive groves and forests. In the gardens orange trees and lemons grow. The pool is huge with a diving board my teenagers spent many hours jumping off!! Inside the view from the living room down the valley towards Lucca is truly stunning. A short walk away is a great local bar and restaurant with a very friendly owner! If you can bear to leave, Lucca is only a 15 minute drive away. This lovely walled city has some really interesting shops and great Italian restaurants. Casa Capella was clean, well maintained and Valerie the owner was extremely helpful. I will be coming back!! Alison

My Response
It is always a pleasure to hear that guests would consider coming back and a pleasure for us to have had such friendly people renting our villa. The pool is large - I insisted on having a larger one than the architect had drawn in the plans as the pool is obviously always going to be a focal point of any villa holiday in Tuscany. Every group of guests we have had have mentioned the pool and the diving board as being very well used throughout their holiday. The pool also looks lovely at night with the underwater lights shimmering though the water and the silhouettes of the trees and mountains in the background. The Bar da Tosca mentioned in Alison's review is exceptionally good value for money and the owner, Paolo, is as she says very friendly and always extends a warm welcome to guests from Casa Cappella. His pizzas are second to none in the Lucca area and locals are regulars there too which is always a good recommendation as the Italians are very particular about their pizzas! Cristina, our caretaker, prides herself on maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and she is always helpful with any problems that may occasionally arise. Lucca is a lovely city and Florence, Pisa and San Gimignano are also within a reasonable driving distance
