Filled with original features including beamed ceilings, traditional flooring, lintels over windows, original stone staircases and flagstone courtyard, this 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom property, sleeping 8 plus 1, has been recently renovated using traditional, and where possible the original materials to create just the right ambience, for a different holiday!

Situated in perfect peace next to a trout stream this private cottage is ideal for those seeking a truly different holiday. Whilst there is a private pool, there is also the river which is a great adventure for children to play in if they bring their wellies/jellies.

The grounds are perfect for secluded picnics, with just the sounds of the river . T is extremely difficult to gain permission for a pool beside such an historic building, and in a riverside location so this property is quite unique..

This is a perfect choice for a totally ‘alternative’ holiday, staying away from it all in authentic, but comfortable accommodation, beside the river, and with great opportunity for walking. This would be a wonderful family holiday, and we imagine it would be impossible to tear children away from all this outdoor experience!

Quiet room leads into twin bedroom - ideal for teenagers and older children.

Nb - head height in this room is full height in places but beams do come down as low as 1.5m in some areas.

All rooms have beamed ceilings and some exposed stonework.

The house is surrounded by a traditional style courtyard with original feel stones. This area is ideal for dining al fresco and has a bbq.

Further covered eating area overlooking pool.

Ping pong.

The courtyard leads to the garden where there is a private gated, saline water swimming pool (non chlorine) of 10m x 4m .

The garden is edged by some woodland on one side, and the trout stream on the other.

There is parking under the garden for when guests use 'river road' which is pretty steep but quite navigable, or over the mediaeval bridge when coming on foot (200m away) .

A little about location:

San Michele is situated in the heart of the Garfagnana hills approximately 1 hour north of Lucca.
The village is split into two by the River Serchio which is a trout stream, with the ‘historic village’ on one side, and the ‘new village’ on the other. The 'historic village’, which is where the cottage is located, is best described as a small medieaval hamlet, and consists of only a handful of houses, and a ‘castle’ which is still inhabited by locals in the summer. Properties are reached on foot, via original mule track style 'roads'.
This olde worlde hamlet is accessible only on foot, over a mediaeval bridge, although in the summer the cottage itself is also accessible by driving over the 'river road'. There is a free (and cleverly hidden from view) car park just before the footbrige if you dont want to take your car over the 'river road'
Staying here, is pure peace, with only the sound of the river running, and the occasional church bell to accompany your thoughts. It is also a unique experience, staying in a peaceful hamlet that has not changed for hundreds of years, and a great adventure for children.
The house itself is surrounded on one side by an ample garden with pool , a small woodland, and is bordered by the beautiful trout stream.
Whilst set in the middle of a time warp, one can walk to the local village of Piazza al Serchio for provisions, a couple of bars, a couple of restaurants, and a train station for easy exploring. There is also a pizzeria a 10 minute walk or so away, ran by the owners of the house, where you will receive preferential treatment - if you can tear yourselves away from the house!

For days further afield, Lucca is one hour, Barga 35 minutes, Pisa 1 hr 30 mins; Florence 2 hrs. The local market town of Castelnuovo is just a 20 minute drive, and there are plenty of hill top villages to visit, as well as the National Parks....

Lovely Villa in stunning location

By on 06-Aug-2017

Beautiful villa in a stunning location up in the mountains. The pool area looks out across the valley and has lots of room around it for the kids. The villa has everything you would need for a highly enjoyable holiday.

This was our first time in Northern Tuscany and were taken back by the dramatic landscapes.

The kids loved the river at the bottom of the property, daily fishing trips and damp building at sun down time.

Marco could not have been more hospitable, even making sure we had pizzas on arrival!

“Tuscan delight”

By on 19-Sep-2015

We have a wonderful week at Cottage San Michel. Perfect house, gorgeous grounds, stunning surroundings, the ideal distance from the village to stretch our legs and get the daily bread and shop (with a dip in the river on the way!). Our arrival was aided by the helpful info pack, the fact that the owners have a pizzeria and we were able to get food after 10pm and be guided to the house to avoid end-of-the-road lost-and-tired syndrome. We'd been to Tuscany 3 or 4 times before. I'd def stay here again. PS make sure you visit Castelnuovo's Friday Market and book for a lunchtime tasting at Osteria Vecchio Mulino - leading the way in promoting good produce PAT style (prodotti agroalimentari tradizionali). Yum.

Tuscan heaven.

By on 15-Aug-2015

We've stayed in Tuscany 3 or 4 times before at the same place. We had been disappointed that we couldn't stay there this year but what a lucky break. Instead we opted to stay at Cottage San Michele. We'll never look back! Even before arrival, we were well looked after with helpful instructions. We were directed to the owners' pizzeria in the village and have never been more grateful at 10pm, to find they were still serving and to sit down to pizza and lovely local wine. What a lovely start to the week. Marco and Claudio were so welcoming. We were grateful too to be guided to the cottage that night... that might have been daunting in the dark. We loved the house and the grounds were immaculate. We felt we were in the middle of nowhere so it was a lovely surprise in the daylight to discover we could walk through the old part of the village to the bakers and shops (and in fact had a river swim on the way!) We had the loveliest week - visitors to the cottage must go the Friday market at Castelnuovo and have a tasting lunch in Osteria Vecchio Mulino (say hello to owner Andrea and helpful waitress Barbara Burrelli). They are leading the way in promoting good produce PAT style (prodotti agroalimentari tradizionali). Yum. You can't fail to have a great time here. PS wee point. I thought the pool might be small from the pic but it was perfect and loved that it was low chlorine

Cottage San Michele - bella,bella!

By on 01-Aug-2015

Wow - what a fantastic place to holiday! We loved our stay in Cottage San Michele, from the warm reception from Marco and Claudio ( and pizzas!), the beautiful villa, garden and pool, learning to play table tennis again, the views to the surrounding mountains and villages, to the morning walk down the pack horse trail and over the medieval bridge to collect the bread. Its the second time we have stayed in and around Piazza al Serchio and we can't wait to make a return visit. Yes the WiFi can be a bit patchy but when theres all this on offer - who cares!

“Typical & Nice cottage in San Michele”

By on 12-Jul-2014

Great place with great swimming-pool and great view on part of the village! I highly recommand this cottage to rest and spent some time in family!
The best was definitely the welcome/reception from Marco, the owner! Nothing was missing!
And I highly recommand to eat in his restaurant in the village!

Great time!

By on 21-Jun-2014

We had an unforgettable break in Cottage San Michele. Marco was the perfect host, giving us lifts to and from the shops and pizzeria. The cottage is really secluded and offers amazing views over the surrounding area. The cottage itself had everything we needed for a really comfortable stay. If you don't mind walking and being totally secluded this is the place for you, much more authentic than some of the other touristy places nearby. We'll definitely be back!

Peace and quiet

By Tony And Sarah Haberfield on 07-Jun-2014

We recently spent a week at Cottage San Michele and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet and privacy. The owners were extremely helpful and happy to help sort out any queries or problems. Their pizzaria is fantastic and we ate there three times during the week! The scenery is beautiful and the surroundings not at all touristy. The house itself stayed very cool (you may need a sweatshirt in the evening!) and was well-equipped. The track to the house is challenging but was not a problem and we enjoyed the quirkiness of driving through the river! We have stayed in villas before but Tuscan Retreats are the best company we've dealt with. The information booklet you can print off was second to none and enhanced our holiday no end.

Wonderful villa in wonderful countryside

By on 24-Aug-2013

We have stayed in countless villas all over Europe and this is one of the best. The qulaity of the restoration done by owners Marco and Claudio does them great credit and they are always on hand to deal with any unforeseen issues (we had one with some local wildlife!). The newly built pool is magnificent as is the view across the rolling Tuscan hills which we explored on our bikes with no hassle from traffic. The bedrooms are all large and the kitchen well stocked. The massive dining table wasn't used as we ate outside every evening except when we visited Marco's pizzeria which the kids loved. When we arrived the owners transported our luggage up to the villa whilst we walked the short uphill path across the medieval bridge to the villa. A day later we were happily negotiating the 'river' road ourselves in our large people carrier - again the kids loved this. There is loads to see and do in the local area, the Roman fort is a must. We would definitely return to this area and this villa in particular.

Idyllic retreat in the Tuscan hills…….

By on 10-Aug-2013

Lovely old stone house that has been nicely restored. Pleasant garden with sweeping views across the river to the town and hills beyond. The pool was excellent - well appointed and offering a welcome respite from the Tuscan sun. The welcome from the family owners Marco and Claudio was way above expectations - we arrived in the dark towards midnight in our hire car and headed as instructed to their restaurant in the town to collect the keys…but they would not let us leave before we had eaten 'on the house' pizzas! They then led the way to the house a mlle away and helped us unload. Throughout the rest of week they were very attentive without being obtrusive….and we enjoyed the food at their restaurant so much that we ate there again a couple more times during our week. All in all, a great base for a relaxing stay in the sun. One tip - if you are likely to be arriving in the dark, either print out some good maps before you go or invest in a satnav with your hire car as the roads can get quite twisty and the signs are not always what you might hope for!

Thank you

By on 27-Jul-2013

Dear Marco and Claudio
Thank you so much for our wonderful week in cottage San. Michele. It was our first visit to Tuscany but we will certainly be back. Thank you for looking after us so well. We really did appreciate your kindness in ferrying us up and down, the wonderful salad meal that you fed us when we arrived and the gorgous tiramasu that you so kindly brought up to us. I am really sorry that my Italian was so poor as I would like to have been able to thank you properly and to talk to your Mum and your children as well as yourselves. Thank you for your patience.

I did get the hang of getting the car up to the cottage by the middle of the week and we thoroughly enjoyed the cool and very well appointed cottage and the lovely cool swimming pool. You have done a wonderful job doing up the cottage and the little extras you provided were much appreciated and made it very easy for us.
Your pizzas were absolutely beautiful and the best meals we had in Tuscany, and I shall really miss your lovely pannacotta.
Thank you so much for everything.
Lorraine, thank you for your really useful leaflet on the local area - much appreciated. We had a really lovely week. I was also impressed with your company as the people were all really helpful - especially good as I had not used you before and felt able to trust your service.

Brilliant get away from it all location

By on 13-Jul-2013

Marco and Claudio could not have made us more welcome, some lovely welcoming touches. Lovely house, carefully and thoughtfully presented. In the middle of nowhere up a very steep track with the alternative of a healthy trek up a stepped path from the village car park. Car essential. At the top of a hill overlooking the river valley - beautiful peaceful views. Very secluded. Pool wonderful reward for climb up to property. A beautiful and fascinating area. The property is well situated for exploring as long as you have a car and are "adventurous". A real "get away". Would love to return. Marco and Claudio's restaurant one of the best around and greeted like royalty!! Speaking italian would be an advantage but Marco and Claudio very good at making themselves understood. I would certainly recommend the property to anyone who wants a peaceful, quiet getaway.

Wonderful family holiday

By on 06-Jul-2013

We had a wonderful family holiday at San Michele and Marco and Claudio couldn't have been better hosts. The house was beautifully furnished and equipped with everything we needed and the views all around are simply stunning. This was the first time we'd really been to Tuscany and although the roads to the village weren't the easiest to negotiate, we managed to find everything we needed fairly close to the house. In true British style we tried sightseeing in the middle of the day but soon settled on long, lazy lunches followed by delicious ice cream in the towns and villages along the valley. We took road bikes with us and discovered some great but tough climbs in the surrounding hills. If opera is your thing, try the summer Puccini festival at Torre del Lago. All in all, an excellent holiday.

One of the best holidays we have ever had:

By on 22-Jun-2013

A wonderful place to stay. We were 2 families living there for a week in the summer of 2013. Our impression is that 4 children and 4 adults has lots of space. It´s a very nice house in a style you dream of when you visit Tuscany. It´s very calm and beautiful situated on a hillside with a breathtaking view over the river Serchio valley. You feel like a king looking out over the contryside from the sunchairs aside the well-kept pool. For those who likes flyfishing. Bring your AFTM 3 flyrod. You can have a nice troutfishing early in the mornings in the clear stream.. The owners are very nice and helpful even if the lack of other language than italian was a small problem. As an example they offered us pizza in their restaurant when we arrived quite hungry in the evening. We really appreciated that a lot. We will certainly return some time.
