Headborough Farm and its outbuildings began in late medieval times and have been modified and extended throughout their long history. The largest building is the tithe barn where crops (effectively a local 10% tax on tenant farmers) were secured. The barn was neglected in the 20th century and suffered some severe structural damage, culminating in a fire in the 1980's which damaged the roof and upper walls.
The current owners obtained listed building consent to restore the entire building from its state of total ruin, with about half to be used as a holiday home. After two and a half years' work involving numerous local skilled artisans, the end result has satisfied the needs for conservation whilst providing a unique and comfortable house. Many of the materials used were either recycled or locally sourced. The thatch is under-lined with sheep's wool and the new walls are highly insulated and up to 900 mm thick! For extra comfort, the windows are either triple or double glazed. It is a very comfortable and low energy dwelling.
Inside, the fittings and fixtures are modern and functional. The furniture (beds, sofas and curtains) has been chosen to provide the comfort of typical 4-5 star hotel, whilst fitting in with the country rustic style of the oak beams and planked doors. All technical parts are modern and efficient; the under-floor heating system, the cooking equipment, the laundry, and the TV system included.
The Tithe Barn has its own private outside spaces including a patio and barbecue / recreation area. The remaining part of the barn is a spacious galleried games room with table tennis table, a large 7 ft pool / snooker table and a quality cross trainer. Here you will see the full beauty of a traditional oak framed roof and the underside of the thatch.
I cannot fault this wonderful place. Everything about it is just perfect. Beautiful setting and gorgeous accommodation. The rooms are clean and spacious. The kitchen is equipped to extremely high standards. The games room is exceptional. Lovely village with great selection of shops. I wish we had been able to stay longer than the five nights we had there. COVID measures were really good. Stuart and Jane are fantastic hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. We will definitely go back in the future.
A beautiful luxury barn that made us relax as soon as we arrived especially with the goodies that were left for us - most appreciated. We felt very safe and the barn was exceptionally clean with all the COVID-19 guidelines observed. Stuart & Jane are the perfect hosts so helpful & friendly & of course their 2 labradors Ollie & Toby. Nothing was too much trouble and gave us lots of help where to visit on Dartmoor along with Pru recommending Bigbury on sea & Burgh Island perfect for our dog. The barn was large and very comfortable with all our requirements well and truly met - excellent. A short 5 minute walk to Ashburton to but our provisions- excellent butchers, artisan bakers, greengrocers, cafe, etc. Perfect location for Dartmoor & the coast and 1 week wasn’t enough to see everywhere we wanted to visit. The large enclosed field was ideal for our dog Fleur to exercise off lead every morning. The barn is a wonderful place to relax in - so quiet with a perfect location.
Five star stay
A beautiful Devon thatched barn sitting on the edge of Ashburton. The Owners have created a wonderful home which was in exceptional condition. Fantastically clean and considering the concerns of this year we felt really comfortable and Very safe here. They are making every effort for their clients.
The home itself has a generous living area and kitchen, providing a focus for the family to come together.
Lovely bedrooms, all very large and en-suite. I am no expert but the downstairs Bedroom looks to be designed to accommodate wheelchairs and the ensuite is a wet room with multiple hand rails.
Small patio with large table and gas bbq.
The barn is located just 5-10 minute short walk into town, which is has all you need Shops , take always and cafes.
Great location to visit either Exeter or Plymouth, the beaches or to explore the Dartmoor Park, There is loads to do for all ages and mobility’s.
Definitely worth the trip to Devon, especially at this Barn. We will return.
The barn was AMAZING! We were the first family to visit since the Lockdown and I was really grateful to the owners for getting the Covid clean done in time for our much need holiday!
The reason I booked this barn was because it was crucial that the accommodation had a downstairs bedroom and wet room as we were travelling with my disabled mother. Following her severe stroke, she now uses an electric wheelchair but is also able to walk short distances with a tripod stick indoors. For our stay the owners placed a piece of large hard board over the gravel on the drive meaning we could pull the car right up to the entrance and she could safely step out. There was also a ramp placed at the door to enter the hallway. Once inside the barn was ideal, it was very spacious with clear, wide walkways and open plan living area which meant she was able to join in with the whole family, even being able to access the kitchen area easily. We used a large sturdy chair with arms from the games room for her to sit in as this meant again, it was easier for her to get up from sitting. The flooring throughout the ground floor was safe, non slip and she loved the under floor heating. The downstairs bedroom was was very spacious and nicely distanced from the living area by a short corridor. An open hanging rail in the bedroom, meant she could easily hang and access her clothes independently. We took our own bed rail and the bed was the right height for her to pull herself up to standing without assistance (many beds are too low) The wet room was ideal... although no shower curtain meant my daughter did also get soaked when assisting with the shower... wear your swimming costume! The owner provided a shower stool with handles and there were rails to hold on to, on the wall, also there was an alarm cord, if help was needed. We didn’t need this but it was reassuring to know, as we all slept upstairs during the night. The owner also provided a sturdy toilet seat frame meaning again we didn’t have to bring our own. The outside area was peaceful, with lovely views of the pond and orchard, chairs with arms again meant my mother didn’t have to struggle.
If you are travelling with a guest with mobility problems the set up is ideal. My mother gets upset by being reminded that she is disabled and she therefore really dislikes anywhere that looks different or adapted. She is fiercely independent and she was able to maintain her independence safely during our stay. The barn was perfect for all of us, luxurious and sensitively accessible. We will most certainly be returning...!
We first stayed at this property a couple of years ago and were so impressed that we wanted to return to it - something we rarely do as we like to try new places, however the Tithe Barn is absolutely perfect for what we need. The property has been renovated to the highest standard and the quality of the building, fixtures and fittings is reflected throughout. We have three children (12,10,10) and the blend of outdoor space (there is a dedicated large mown field for you to use for ball games or in our case flying a drone!) and indoor facilities is first class. There is a games room that has a pool table and a full size table tennis table which kept all amused for many hours - there is even a cross trainer in there for the more energetic! The owners are very friendly and accommodating and made us again feel so welcome - their beautiful friendly black labradors were also a massive hit with our children who loved them as much as our own dog! The location of the property is just outside Ashburton which is ideal if you want to nip into town for supplies etc as well as cafes and restaurants. The big attraction to us is it is only minutes away from the heart of Dartmoor. We did walking, wild river swimming (cold!) and ate out at a couple of excellent and remote pubs. Other amenities are also really close so for the younger children the steam railway is 10 minutes away and we also found a great climbing wall in Buckfastleigh for the one rainy day we experienced. There are superb beaches about 40 mins away as well as a great place to go crabbing (Stoke Gabriel) and Paignton Zoo is within striking distance, which is a good day out. We travelled a bit further afield to the likes of Lydford Gorge (National Trust) and Coleton Fishacre (National Trust) as well as a visit to the museum at HMP Dartmoor (good for a curious couple of hours). Plenty to do, especially if you are outdoors orientated but lots even if you are not. The property is a quiet and secluded haven where you immediately feel relaxed and can listen to the buzzards (day) and owls (night) from the private patio area. We will definitely be returning and thank Stuart and Jane for their hospitality.
Close to the quaint town of Ashurton and of course rugged Dartmoor - great for exploring, The Tithe Barn certainly deserves the 5* Gold Award rating. We've stayed in many high end self catering properties, all of which have been excellent but this was exceptional Our hosts Jane and Stuart were so welcoming, the rooms were large, airy and light and so well equipped with everything we might possibly need.
We have just returned home from a fantastic week in Stuart and Jane’ beautiful cottage.
We took our youngest three children and the barn was equipped for their every need. They were especially impressed with the games room and the large field to play in. However, it was Stuart and Jane’ two friendly labradors that they loved the most .
The cottage is set in an idyllic peaceful location but only a stones throw from Ashburton.
We were never short of things to do or places to visit and could easily have filled a second week.
Will definitely visit again and would recommend the cottage to anyone.

The owners were very welcoming and extremely helpful during our stay. The Tithe Barn was wonderful with everything we needed and more. Location is amazing, short walk to Ashburton where there are lots of interesting shops, pubs and restaurants and dogs are welcomed in most of them, great central location for travelling around the Devon beauty spots. In short we enjoyed it so much we have booked another week later in the year.
Ashburton is a lovely little town on the edge of Dartmoor and is perfectly located for days out to the English Riviera towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. It's also equally easy to drive south to the beautiful towns of Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge. The dramatic scenery of Dartmoor is on the doorstep of this beautiful barn and there are lovely walks to be had along the banks of the River Dart. After a busy day's sightseeing it was lovely to come back and sit out in the garden and read a book or the papers with nothing to hear but birdsong. We loved the little touches supplied by Jane and Stuart...they are great hosts and we were made to feel very welcome on our arrival and throughout the week. We would love to go back again!
Our second visit to the Tithe Barn, and I hope not the last. Having stayed in self-catering places from the Isles of Scilly to Orkney, I can honestly say that this is one of the best equipped ever. It is a luxury barn conversion with excellent, high quality fixtures and fittings, in a lovely location on the edge of a village to the south of Dartmoor. Having now stayed here it has spoiled us for staying in other self-catering places in the rest of the country!
Beautifully restored tithe barn with all the mod cons you need for a fantastic stay. Felt at home from the minute we unpacked. Stayed as a group of 5 - plenty of space for all. Clean, comfortable and warm for a winter break. Ground floor - including double bedroom with en-suite wet room - accessible for wheelchair use. Great location for either the coast or moor.

We stayed for 3 nights in February. The barn has been converted to living space to an extremely high standard, very spacious and modern. The location is very convenient for day trips around Devon and only a short walk into Ashburton. We particularly recommend the Llama walks on Dartmoor. The owners live in the farmhouse on site and were very accommodating and helpful whilst still respecting privacy. Highly recommended.
Our third visit to The Tithe Barn at this time of the year was as wonderful as ever. The weather was fairly kind to us; although it was sometimes a bit chilly and grey, we had no rain or storms this time. From tackling the near impossible Robin Hood jigsaw (completed literally an hour before we checked out), to playing tag table tennis, we had a wonderful time of relaxation and fun, in the beautiful, homely Tithe Barn. The kitchen is as well equipped as my own at home, and the general comfort of the whole barn makes it easy to just settle in and enjoy the holiday. Hosts Stuart and Jane are warm and friendly but unobtrusive, and we find we can't wait to see what delicious treat Jane has baked as part of the welcome pack. Looking forward to visit number four.
This is a beautifully maintained and furnished property. In particular the living space has a lovely view over the garden and grounds. Just a short walk into the local village of Ashburton which has excellent shops, restaurants and bars. This is an excellent choice for exploring Devon and nearby Dartmoor. We stayed here for Xmas and the whole family felt at home.
We visited this lovely barn / cottage last year and couldn’t wait to return. It is very spacious and comfortable with everything needed for a good stay. Only a few minutes’ drive from the moors with easy and more challenging walks, especially atmospheric with the low clouds and storms that we experienced on some days. Equally, it is close to beautiful countryside towards the sea with plenty of places to visit. And of course it is only a five minute walk into Ashburton with several good food shops. We ate at the Old Library which was an excellent meal and recommended by previous guests and by our hosts. Stuart and Jane were extremely welcoming and helpful and a very good source of information and local knowledge.
The location was excellent for exploring this area of Dartmoor, and just a short walk into Ashburton. The barn was large, very comfortable and very well equipped, in fact the best holiday rental we have ever stayed in, thank you Stuart and Jane, we should love to return sometime in the future.
Just returned from a weeks stay....
The Tithe barn has been beautifully designed and adds to your holiday staying in such amazing accommodation, the games extension part of the barn was a added bonus for teenagers in the evening pool, table tennis, cross trainer... Great spot to explore Dartmoor walks from the accommodation or easy to drive too stunning locations. Coastal resorts also easy to drive too making it fun for all age groups. Would highly recommend ....sad to leave would definitely book again.
My family and I thought this property was first class! Every room has been stylishly designed. It is in a perfect spot to explore Devon. I would recommend it to anyone and to families with young children. We will definitely be returning.
We've just spent a wonderful week at Tithe Barn. We booked it specifically as our eldest daughter is in a wheelchair and we found the ground floor accommodation with ensuite wet room was perfect for her requirements. The quality of accommodation overall is 5 star and we really felt spoilt!
The owners Stuart and Jane are very proud of their cottage and rightfully so. Everything you could possibly wish for they have thought of and more. The games room (pool table and table tennis), games and puzzles, and the outdoor space make it a perfect choice for families. It's a great base for exploring Devon - just wish we could have spent more time here.
The pictures of the Tithe barn don't really do it justice – it is much nicer, very airy and spacious, definitely a luxury 5-star cottage. The owners are extremely helpful and the barn comes supplied with all necessities and even some delicious freshly baked scones on arrival! It is a short walk into Ashburton, which is a very nice town with plenty of small independent shops to browse around. (Ella's bakery, is a definite must!) Ashburton is a great starting point for trips into Dartmoor or the seaside. What a perfect place to stay!
Our second stay at the Tithe Barn. This is an exceptional place to stay, with the standard first class. I can say this with confidence having stayed in self-catering accommodation in Devon for 30 years. Stuart and Jane have been superb hosts and very helpful. Everything is catered for. Lovely location for travelling, highly recommended.
Three generations of our family have just spent a fantastic week at the Tithe Barn in Ashburton. The location is great, within easy driving distance to many seaside resorts and also on the doorstep of Dartmoor National Park - you really are spoilt for choice for places to visit. The Grandchildren particularly enjoyed the House of Marbles at Bovey Tracey - so much so they went there twice! The Barn is stylishly decorated and very spacious. Everything you could possibly want is provided and the games room complete with pool table and table tennis is an added bonus. Plenty of outdoor space for children to run around in. Thank you Stuart and Jane for your very thoughtful hospitality.
The accommodation is outstanding. Jane and Stuart went that extra mile to make us feel very welcome...
Ashburton, on the edge of Dartmoor is a beautiful small town with local independent shops, including Artisan bakers, deli, butchers, gift and antiques shops. We had an evening meal at The Old Library which was amazing. The barn is very spacious, well equipped, and one of the best I’ve ever been to. It was spotlessly clean, the beds very comfortable and I couldn’t fault it in any way. We are already discussing when we are all available for a return visit.
Tithe Barn is perfectly located for exploring Devon and beyond. it is well equipped, spotlessly clean and extremely spacious. Close to the village of Ashburton it is convenient for all the local shop, restaurants and pubs, without being in a busy location, which lends itself to a peaceful place to spend time in the Devon countryside. We visited in April for the first time, but definitely not the last!
Great place to stay, to visit Dartmoor and the coastal area. We experienced a very heartwarming welcome, and the house meets outstanding high standards one can think of. Our daughter who is a wheelchair user could very easy access the house, the bedroom and ensuite bathroom on the groundfloor. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly consider to recommend the house.
The property is excellent in every regard. The hosts Stuart and Jane welcome you warmly and the welcome pack tides you over for your first night. Thoughtfully there is lots of information available to you including eating places and walks nearby on the Moors. The property is furnished extremely well and all the bedrooms are ensuite. It’s a good size and we had everything we needed for the week we were there. The town is a 15 minute maximum walk away and good dogs are welcome in the town and by the hosts. Location is second to none. We found it extremely quiet. As a bonus there is a Games room which provides table tennis, pool and a keep fit bike. A truly wonderful rental with thoughtful hosts. We will return.
We took our two dogs with us for a half term break - great welcome, great facilities and very clean and comfortable. Would definitely go back!
A return visit to the Tithe Barn to see in the New Year. We were very grateful for the warmth and the lovely thick walls and thatch, as Storm Eleanor did her worst outside! The only thing that is maybe lacking from the barn is a dvd player - might be a useful addition, especially when the weather is too inclement to want to venture out. Apart from that, amazing home from home, with everything else you could possibly need.
We stayed in the property over Christmas. The owners had kindly put up Christmas decorations and we loved the cottage. It was impeccably clean and well appointed. It was quite pricey for the Christmas period but I would definitely stay again. The only minor criticism is that it’s quite hard to find on a dark winter’s evening and so an outside light illuminating the name sign would be useful.
The house is in a lovely location. It's only a few minutes walk to the shops and restaurants of Ashburton and yet you feel as if you're in the middle of the country. The house has been beautifully converted. It's comfortable, light and airy, with large spacious rooms and a gorgeous outlook. It's also the best-equipped self-catering accommodation we've ever stayed in.
My husband has limited mobility and he really appreciated the easy ramped access through the front door, the wide doorways and the completely level ground floor; and also the very spacious living room and bedroom which made it easy for him to get around with a walking frame. There was also lots of space on the patio for him to move around. The shower in the wet room was excellent and Stuart provided us with a shower stool and toilet frame. For outings it was easy to bring the car up to the front gate which avoided any need to get across the stony drive with a wheelchair or walking frame.
Altogether we loved it and would happily book another holiday here.
A short stroll from the centre of a small but bustling town centre brings you to the delightfully quiet Headborough Farm and the Tithebarn. The rebuilt barn is stunning, spacious and hides a modern interior which marries perfectly with the original stonework. Ashburton is ideally placed for easy access to Dartmoor and South Hams, and, for its size, has more than its fair share of food shops and antique centres. There is even a heated outdoor swimming pool which opens at 7.00 a.m. on two days per week. It's a great start to the day, but do note - the signs are for pedestrians, not cars; park in the town centre and walk.
On a warm, sunny afternoon the patio at the Tithebarn is perfect for a long lunch and the bi-fold doors make it very easy to keep everyone fed and watered.
We had Mabel the dog with us and could take her into an adjoining field which is big enough for serious playtime, if you like that sort of thing.
Stuart and Jane are considerate hosts who put a lot of effort into the place and we enjoyed our stay from the moment we arrived ... and if it's raining, there's always the games room
Great location for visiting places. A very warm welcome from Stuart and Jane. We had a very comfortable stay and our daughter, who is a wheelchair user, could get around easily into the shower room and bedroom which are on the ground floor.Stuart and Jane provided a raised toilet seat and there was also a ramp to access the property. The Barn was spotless and was very well equipped. We hope to visit again in the future.
From the moment of arrival at The Tithe Barn Stuart and Jane make you feel very welcome. The Barn is immaculate, comfortable, very well thought out and equipped to meet your every need. The Barn is beautifully situated a few minutes from Ashburton , a lovely unspoilt Stannary town with a range of interesting shops. If you want a break from self catering there are plenty of eating opportunities in Ashburton and surrounding area, and the Old Library restaurant in the town is well worth a visit. The Barn is also a short distance from the moor and its breath taking scenery.
In summary the Tithe Barn is truly outstanding, in a wonderful location, with welcoming hosts. It is beyond a 5* experience and you could not ask for more.
We wanted a cottage where we could join together as a family, from the very youngest who was only a couple of weeks old to the eldest who had just celebrated their 70th birthday. We also had a large dog, and someone with limited mobility. Tithe Barn suited us all! Everything had had a lot of thought put into it to make our stay truly luxurious. Stuart & Jane were welcoming - leaving us a welcome pack which included some warm home made scones along with fresh clotted cream and homemade jam. It was a lovely start after our long journey. The Barn itself had a large open plan kitchen/dining room (This had a really great selection of all the kitchen utensils, crockery, everything we needed we found!) a really large lounge with a large Freeview TV, with Netflix, large sofas, a great selection of books/games/puzzles From the lounge, there were floor to ceiling opening doors,so you can walk from the sitting area into the patio courtyard, which has a large table with chairs and parasol, There is also a gas fired barbeque. Also downstairs there is a fully equipped laundry room and a large bedroom with a large wet room and toilet. The shower was top of the range, not only having a rain shower but a hand held one too. Perfect for someone with limited mobility or wheelchair bound. Up a few steps there was a large games room with table tennis table & dart board!! This gave us hours of fun as a family to relax in the evening. Even though wheelchair users couldn't access this, I think you could enter from the backdoor outside and, once you were in the games room, it was disabled friendly. Upstairs there were a further 2 large bedrooms each with a large bathroom and beautiful views overlooking the lovely countryside. Tithe barn was one of the best self catering cottages we've been to. All the little extras that make it truly luxurious. The underfloor heating was lovely too. The only small drawback was the gravel outside the barn which made it hard for the wheelchair. Not impossible, but you needed someone to help push the wheelchair from the car into the barn. We highly recommend this lovely cottage and its very friendly owners.
Fantastic three bedroom cottage situated within easy walking distance of Ashburton and on the edge of the moors suitable for a family of six and also pet friendly, large field for the dog to run around.
The owners made us very welcome, including homemade scones and clotted cream on arrival.
We have already recommend this cottage to our friends and we are planning to return next year
This is a tremendous holiday home, in every possible way. The property itself has been built and fitted out to a vry high standard, and is a real pleasure to live in, the quiet, green spaces all around are lovely, and the hosts are as welcoming as you could hope for.
Ashburton is a fabulous little town, packed with little shops and possibly the best bakery, making the best cakes fresh each morning, that I've tasted anywhere in the world. Really.
But what made this just right for us was the location, as everything is in easy reach, unlike when we've stayed right on the coast for past trips, stuck down winding roads so you end up staying at just one or two beaches. From here its still quick to the beach, but also the moors, parks, forests, towns, cities pubs and restaurants - everything is 20-30 mins drive away. But the house is so comfortable that on a sunny day you sometimes just don't feel like going anywhere.
We had been considering buying a holiday home in south Devon, as we like it so much, but now we won't bother as this looks like becoming a very regular spot for us in the coming years.
Had a long family weekend in April for a wedding in Ashburton. The Tithe Barn was perfect for a family of 4-6 plus space for extra visitors for lunch or dinner. Lovely location, pond and garden. Walking distance to Ashburton restaurants and shops. Jane and Stuart (and dogs) more than kind and welcoming and we quickly felt at home. Will certainly try and return for a longer stay.
We were a party of 6 seniors who spent two weeks at the Tithe Barn, Ashburton and had a wonderful time. The accommodation was quite incredible. 3 double bedrooms, all with their own bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms could be made into twin bedded rooms - ideal for us. The location is so tranquil being on the outskirts of Ashburton. There were plenty of local walks albeit rather hilly. We spent Easter here and found the kitchen to be so well equipped we were able to cook a full turkey dinner. We did have a problem with the tumble dryer but it was replaced with a new one within the hour! Underfloor heating was a comfort on those chilly nights, especially in the bathrooms. Ashburton was a nice little town with plenty of local shops and restaurants. The roads away from the A38 were very narrow and interesting to drive. This location is very close to Dartmoor, and we were able to visit plenty of National Trust sites. Stuart and Jane were very attentive hosts and very easy to deal with before, during and after our stay. We would certainly recommend this unique property.
The Tithe Barn in Ashburton is easily the best appointed property we have stayed in [out of] the many we have booked through Premier Cottages. The specification is absolute top quality and the owners have put a great deal of thought into all aspects. We are a family of five with three children (10,8,8) and we had a brilliant time. The children played either on the swings or in the mown fields of the property (often with the owners dogs who were great companions) or made use of the games rooms with a pool table and table tennis. The property is just on the border of the national park and within a couple of minutes we could be on the moor walking. It is also conveniently located close to a number of other attractions in the area with the Beach 35 mins away to the South and the same time to places like the National Trust's Lydford Gorge or Castle Drogo. The owners were very friendly and helpful even drawing us maps of local walks away from the crowds that only locals knew! Would definitely book and again and I would highly recommend.
We booked the Tithe Barn for a family get together with our adult children now living in different parts of England and abroad. The accommodation is an amazing beautifully finished restoration with oak and thatch and space and comfort and warmth. It is very well equipped throughout and more than met our requirements. We found it easy to access Dartmoor and could walk in to Ashburton. Even in January we could sit outside (well wrapped up) and enjoy the sunshine. Now of older age we were delighted with the layout and practicality of our bathroom and our wonderfully comfortable bed. Our children were equally thrilled with The Tithe Barn. Jane and Stuart were most helpful and thoughtful hosts.
This is a lovely place to stay. The barn is built to a very high standard and is both comfortable and luxurious. The hosts are very helpful and accommodating. It's situated in beautiful surroundings within easy reach of many scenic beauty spots and wonderful walking areas.
The tithe barn was a fabulous place to spend Christmas. It has been beautifully restored, with light and airy rooms, and plenty of space for a party of adults. The open plan main reception room meant that the cook wasn't shut away from the festivities, which was a nice change, and the underfloor heating meant that we were toasty warm despite some very cold weather outside. We have had breaks in many holiday lets, but the Tithe Barn was by far the best equipped we have ever been to. The location is brilliant, with walks on Dartmoor right on your doorstep, but beaches an easy drive away, given that Ashburton is on the edge, not the middle of Dartmoor. Plymouth and Exeter are not too far away either; we can personally recommend Exeter for theatres, cinema, and many places to eat out if you need them. However there are a few places to get great food in Ashburton itself, and we had a wonderful meal in Moorish, which is only a ten minute walk from the barn. Stuart and Jane were very welcoming, even before we arrived, contacting us with suggestion for places to eat out, and offers to take in our shopping order if we needed them to. There are plenty of maps and leaflets in the barn so you will never be short of places to visit, but Stuart and Jane are close by it you need any help at all. A nice touch again was being shown around the barn when we arrived, by owners who are justifiably proud of their property.
We had a wonderful few days at Tithe Barn it is a truly beautiful holiday home , everything you could think of is there and more .. the attention to detail is outstanding .. I would not hesitate to recommend this place
The Tithe Barn is about as good as you will find. The whole layout and facilities are first class. Excellent bedrooms and a very well equipped kitchen. Stuart and Jane were very helpful and friendly hosts. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property for those looking for a high-end holiday let. Great location for the Moor and Coast, with Ashburton a few minutes walk. We hope to be back.
We were looking for a nice peaceful cottage, near to Dartmoor, but with all the luxuries of modern living, and we found it in The Tithe barn. The facilities were excellent, with a downstairs bedroom for the less mobile person, and all of a very high standard. There were lovely walks within a stone's throw of the property and easy access up onto the moor. And when our outdoor activities for the day were over, we could relax in comfortable surroundings with superfast broadband and Freesat television. A most pleasant place to stay indeed.
The barn has been done up and decorated to a very high standard, and filled with very good quality equipment. The setting is beautiful and the owners, who live next door, are friendly and extremely helpful. Ashburton is a lovely small town filled with interesting shops, and it is a great place to explore the moor and the coast from. We had a lovely relaxing week there and would thoroughly recommend it.
This wonderfully renovated historical building was the perfect spot to spend a few days in Devon. It's well lit open spaces were truly relaxing and offered plenty of room for my toddler to safely explore. Jane was a fantastic hostess who provided true gems on where to go and where to eat. I would highly recommend spending your vacation at the Tithe Barn!
From the moment we arrived at The Tithe Barn (a wonderful barn conversion finished to the highest standard) we wanted for nothing - Stuart and Jane appear to have thought of everything! We were a group of six adults a mix of family & friends, there was plenty of space for everybody and we made good use of the games room in the evenings when we returned from our walks even if it did get a little too competitive :) The location was great for walks on Dartmoor and visits to the coast - we hope to visit again in the future!
5/5 The Tithe Barn exceeded our expectations and was the perfect luxury holiday home.
Left on Jul 31, 2016 for a stay in Jul 2016
A truly stunning barn conversion, tastefully and lovingly restored to create a holiday home that was a pleasure to stay in. Every little detail had been thought through and the barn was really well equipped. We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen ( I even used the slow cooker ) and eating on the courtyard patio. All the bedrooms were comfortable, large and ensuite but the master bedroom ensuite was absolutely fabulous! Our hosts Stuart and Jane were friendly, welcoming and helpful giving us plenty of ideas about the locality. They shared home grown vegetables and picked blackcurrants which got baked into a pie! It was great to take a short stroll into the lovely little town Ashburton, with an Artisan Bakery, an excellent deli as well as a fish deli. We tried out one of the circular walks from the house which we enjoyed as well as investigating a few Tors and interesting villages that were within a short car ride. We liked that there was so much to do without driving far and our week filled up very quickly. An exceptionally lovely property which we would recommend without reservation!
Both my husband and I were looking for an idyllic place to stay on the edge of Dartmoor, and we found it in buckets. I have been living in Dubai for 10 years and married my British husband a year ago, so wanted to see where he grew up as a child and to experience the best of the south west of England. ‘The Tithe Barn’ was a perfect place to spend our time and a great base from which to make the most of what the area has to offer. Ashburton town is literally five minutes’ walk away, and we were able to find all we needed to make the most of the barn’s wonderfully well equipped kitchen and dining space. Although the barn is quite close to the town you feel you are in the countryside as well. It is only short drive to some incredible moorland scenic walks. Over our one week stay we had typical British mixed weather, so it gave us the opportunity to enjoy the well equipped games room during the rainy days. When we did brave the wet weather to walk on the moors, it was fantastic to come back home and have the laundry room to hang all our wet gear to dry; and the bedrooms with the wet rooms and the amazing rain-effect showers. We would just like to thank our hosts -Jane and Stuart- for making our stay a wonderful experience. We won’t forget the fresh homemade scones we were offered on our arrival. We really felt like part of the family.
We had an incredible stay at The Tithe barn in Ashburton. The barn has been beautifully renovated and is situated in beautiful grounds overlooking a large pond with carp and an apple orchard. We could have easily spent our whole holiday in the barn because it so comfortable and luxurious. The kitchen had an large range cooker and was equipped with everything you need to cook for large groups. The games room with table tennis and pool, gives you loads of entertainment in the evenings or if it's raining. Jane and Stewart were outstanding hosts, making us feel welcome from the start and helpful when we asked for any recommendations for walks or places to eat or drink! We'd recommend the Rugglestone Inn pub for food, great place to end after a long walk! It was so easy to find and the directions from google took us straight there (a short drive from the A38). We hope to return soon. Highly recommended!
Stuart and Jane were the perfect hosts and live next door, so were always on hand to offer advice and answer queries. The cottage is beautiful. It has been finished to a very high standard and is so well kitted out. We enjoy cooking and the kitchen equipment was the best we have ever had. My father came with us on holiday. He has Parkinson's and has very reduced mobility. The downstairs bedroom and wet room was ideal for him. He appreciated the ramp to get into the property and was able to use his walker easily once inside. The village of Ashburton is a delight - so many artisan shops and delis. We were able to buy all our food from there, which was within walking distance of the cottage (although down a hill, so you wouldn't want to carry to much back up the hill). I would definitely recommend this property and can't wait to go back.
We had reason to stay in Ashburton this Easter and were delighted to find the Tithe Barn available. Stuart and Jane, the owners, gave us an exceptionally warm welcome when we arrived, and showed us around the amazing conversion they had undertaken themselves. The property has all the facilities you could possibly want, amazing open living space and a warm homely feel while being utterly up to date. The bedrooms each had en suite bathrooms, lots of space, comfortable beds and the master bedroom has a fabulous view over the pond and rolling hills of the edge of Dartmoor. Our son Thomas was exceptionally pleased to find a fully stocked games room, complete with pool table and table tennis table. We spent rainy days playing in there, or on some of many board games also supplied. And on sunny days we had a bbq on the patio and enjoyed taking it easy in the sun. The house is fabulous, the facilities are faultless, you will find everything you need in the fully equipped kitchen, and we delighted in entertaining my brother who was also staying in Ashburton around the great kitchen table. We are already planning to return to the Tithe Barn and make more of its great proximity to the nearby moor and beautiful towns in all directions.
