Moreton House is a grade II listed period country house on the outskirts of Bideford in the beautiful north Devon countryside near the coast at Westward Ho! The house offers groups the opportunity to book the entire luxury accommodation wing of the house for groups of up to 17 (plus additional cot or child beds possible) in up to 7 bedrooms, with additional guest rooms in the older part of the house (shared bathroom) making it possible to increase the group size to 30. The main luxury accommodation is divided into four apartments, which can be taken individually or grouped in different combinations, making it possible for different households to stay separately yet close together. The apartments can be opened out to lead to a more interconnected group space if required. Perfect for large families, several families or for groups of friends to get together, and ideal for entertaining or celebrating a special occasion. There are plenty of spaces to gather everyone together, inside or out. The rooms surround a private courtyard with outdoor seating and dining areas, and guests enjoy free run of the 5 acre mature gardens, with additional BBQ and gazebo areas, fire circle and children’s play areas.

The flexible accommodation allows everyone a luxurious double or twin bedroom, each with ensuite bathroom. There are five bedrooms on the ground floor which provide direct access to the gardens, and for smaller groups we have a limited number of pet friendly rooms (for larger groups, we are sorry, no pets). The ground floor rooms provide easily accessible bathroom facilities with plenty of space, grab rails, higher level WCs and walk-in or wet room showers, though with no compromises on elegance. One of the apartment with two further bedrooms lies on the first floor above, reached via stairs, giving a little more privacy. Each apartment has its own kitchen and lounge space, to allow separate groups or generations to breakfast separately, or there is plenty of space to gather all guests together in one large kitchen-dining-lounge room, allowing everyone to mingle and dine together. In the warm weather, the courtyard is perfect for a BBQ, with tables and seating for all. For the cooler evenings, what could be nicer than a cosy log burner and space for the whole family. Book just as many rooms as you need.

Additional function rooms, party rooms, billiards room and children’s play rooms are available by arrangement, with private dining and local catering options - everything from a personal chef to cook in your kitchen to a hog roast, pizza oven, or buffet served for your special occasion. Boutique weddings, celebration dinners, team building, corporate events and family groups all welcomed. Concierge services provided by the owners, who live on site.

Moreton House is just on the outskirts of Bideford, with its pannier market, independent shops and quay with ferry to Lundy island. Minutes from the 2 mile beach of Westward Ho! Close to surfing and family friendly beaches, golf, biking trails and within easy reach of shops, pubs, restaurants, tourist attractions of Clovelly, Appledore, Hartland, Dartmoor and Exmoor, and within the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere reserve.

Our holiday booking process will be slightly different this year, as we incorporate our newly launched wedding packages.

Holiday accommodation can now be booked year round for either a weekend break, a short break during the week, or consecutive weekend and weekday slots to make a full week or more.

Our changeover days will be Thursdays and Mondays.

Weekend slots run Thursday evening to Monday morning. You may of course check in anytime on a Friday if preferred, and leave on a Sunday afternoon or evening.

Weekday slots run from Monday afternoon to Thursday morning. This allows a budget short break option for those not tied to weekends.

To book a standard week, you can choose Monday to Monday or Thursday to Thursday. The price for a week is a little less than a weekend plus a weekday slot.

To book a premium week, with accommodation over both weekends, you can book a weekend slot followed by a week slot then another weekend slot.

These changes may seem a little at odds with the large holiday companies, offering weekly stays starting on Fridays or Saturdays. This is not an accident. We have found that many of our visitors have had difficult and long journeys on standard changeover days, and often our guests have preferred making their journeys on quieter days. In addition, the pandemic has affected the seasonal workforce quite severely, making it very difficult to find staff for busy standard changeover days. We have therefore taken the decision to set a different weekly timetable, that will also allow us to run our weekend weddings and functions throughout the season.

A great place to stay with a large family

By Marilyn Elizabeth Linehan on 15-Aug-2022

Moreton House is a fabulous place to stay with a large family. We brought our family of 13 and were in Bucks, Housekeepers, Cooks and the Daddon suite. A big number to accomodate, but we had heaps of room. The apartments have been renovated and equipped to a very high standard. We had everything we needed and more! Our 5 children age 10 - 16 loved the indoor and outdoor play areas. Harvey and Helen were on hand whenever we needed them. We even had a cream tea for 13 provided on our arrival. Who could ask for more? we would love to return!

Very Highly Recommended

Our family group of 5 adults and 5 children took three apartments in August. Cooks, Housekeepers and Bakehouse. Those apartments make up three sides of a private courtyard with a barbecue and firepit. Housekeepers has another private area for eating, barbecuing and another firepit. The accommodation was extremely comfortable and to a high standard- bedding, furniture, appliances, ovens etc but informal enough for a boisterous set of grandchildren. Tables in Cooks and Housekeepers were large enough for us to enjoy family suppers all together. There are about 5 acres of grounds with surprise play and seating areas and all safe for children to explore. An unexpected bonus was a large internal play room with a trampoline, badminton and softplay slides which kept children from 6 to 12 endlessly amused. Another bonus was a selection of wet suits, bikes, body boards and more free to use. The hosts, Helen and Harvey were available to deal with any minor problems and to give information about the area, amusements, food stores etc. This was the best holiday rental accommodation any of us have ever had. Very highly recommended.
