This beautiful 16th century thatched cottage is situated on the edge of the small village of Ebbesbourne Wake, hidden away in the Chalke Valley, which runs between the cathedral city of Salisbury and the charming market town of Shaftesbury. The Chalke valley, with its string of picturesque villages set between two hill ridges, is part of the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its situation makes it ideal for exploring central southern England, including Stonehenge, Salisbury, Bath, the New Forest and the Dorset coast.

The Blue Cottage nestles beneath a hill, surrounded by a large sunny garden with rough-cut grass, plenty of trees, many of them old, and views across pasture land. It is approached by a very short track, shared by one other house, and feels completely secluded, although it is only about three hundred metres to the village centre with its church and pub (which serves excellent home-cooked food).

The main part of the cottage was built in the 16th century, with thick cob walls and a large inglenook fireplace. An extension was built about a century later (from half-way across the left-hand bedroom window in the picture above), which has resulted in a most unusual layout to the second bedroom, which is partly divided in two by the original end wall of the cottage. A further one-storey extension was built in the first half of the 20th century at the back, which included the kitchen and bathroom.

Newly built extension with modern kitchen and bathroom
This 20th century extension has now been completely rebuilt and extended to provide a large modern kitchen and bathroom, while still being in keeping with the rest of the cottage.

The cottage is available for holiday lets from Saturday to Saturday throughout the year and for short lets during the autumn, winter and spring, when you can curl up in front of the woodburning stove and the thick walls keep out the cooler weather.

Beautiful cottege

By Amanda on 29-May-2021

Such a beautiful cottage. Full of history and character with a lovely new kitchen and bathroom. We were pleased with how peaceful it was and how many lovely walking routes were straight out of the front gate.
The garden is secure and dog friendly with beautiful flowers and an old, English feel to it.
All of the beds were comfy with plenty of room for the four of us and the large entrance area was perfect for the dog as we could close the door at bedtime to give her separation from our bathroom trips.
Some evenings were a bit cold but the storage heaters and log burner and cozy blankets kept us warm.
The kitchen was well stocked with lots of beautiful plates and every pot and utensil I could think of.
The wine and cookies were a lovely welcome too.
The cottage is in easy walking distance to 2 lovely, friendly pubs that serve very good food and a short drive to at least 5 more, all of them with beer gardens and dog friendly rooms. We had a lovely week there and can‘t wait to go back!

A perfect holiday

By Neil Edwards on 19-Apr-2021

We stayed for 4 wonderful nights at the Blue Cottage with our 2 dogs. Everything about our holiday was perfect. The communication from Jessica was excellent (from the first email, everything was sorted and booked within an hour) and all our questions were answered clearly. Directions to the property, parking and instructions for the key were all easy and straightforward. The cottage is a real delight, charming, quaint and just lovely! The modern kitchen has everything you need, washing machine and tumble dryer were very handy. The living room had nice comfy sofas and we were all toasty thanks to the log burner which was simple to use. The bath was lovely and deep! It was super dog friendly which was important for us. They loved the garden which was very secure and there are walks to do direct from the cottage and there are wonderful walks just a short drive away. The wifi is excellent and there is a payphone at the cottage we could give out the number to family if they needed to contact which was very handy for us. Jessica rang to check we had arrived safely and rang again at the end to make sure all was well. When we stupidly left behind a charger she was really supportive in getting it back to us. And there was a bottle of wine and biccies on our arrival too! We hope we can go back one day.

Perfect retreat

By Ellie Clay on 10-Aug-2020

We had a wonderful stay at the Blue Cottage and will definitely be booking to go back. The cottage is like something out of a fairy tale, it has so much character, we loved the wonky cob walls and beams. The living/dinning room is an original part of the house and very cosy, with a lovely big fire place & wood burner, the new kitchen is large and extremely well equipped & the bedrooms cosy and full of character. The owner was great to deal with and made sure our stay went smoothly. The location is very beautiful & peaceful, sitting outside in the evenings was so quiet we enjoyed walks in the area, and visited the lovely countryside pubs, the nearby Horseshoe is very friendly with a nice beer garden and serves very good food. The cottage has good wifi and a modern TV so could cosy up & watch films when it rained. This is a real gem and we can thoroughly recommend a stay.

A lovely break

By Jane And Ken MacKenzie on 03-Mar-2020

We spent 3 days in this delightfully atmospheric bolt hole. It was very comfortable, clean and with a well appointed kitchen which provided for all our selfcatering needs. The masses of reading material was well used as it poured with rain all our stay. The fire was laid and the wherewithal for hot drinks and biscuits on our arrival was very welcoming. The very tall need to duck when going upstairs! We will be returning with our grandsons.

A Miniature Gem in the Chalk Valley

By L D Lane on 27-Jun-2019

We returned to Blue Cottage this summer, and once again found it the perfect retreat from the madding crowd, this time for nature walks throughout Dorset's many wildlife reserves and the occasional swim at Durdle Door to cool off. As ever, the quiet and the dark starry nights in the garden were wonderful, and we ate every meal outside in sun and shade. The interior has been renovated since we last stayed, providing an expanded kitchen space and newly appointed bathroom with a really big tub that fills in no time. We especially like the fact that the rebuilt extension to the cottage is in keeping, being simple and well equipped with everything you need and no more.

I have stayed at Blue cottage for family gatherings in summer, to write chapters of research, in mid winter for secluded trysts in spring and for get togethers with friends at all times of year and somehow it is always perfect. and we manage to find room for everyone under the thatch.

We loved staying at this beautiful thatched cottage! The owner's were very helpful and made our stay pleasurable. The garden is a haven of peace and the area is absolutely stunning. Cute Place

By Alex on 03-May-2019

We stayed for a long weekend with our 2 children aged 2.5 and 4.
Cottage was perfect for us. Full of character. Kitchen modern with all we needed to cook and clean up the kids. Kids loved their little room - glad my 6 foot 2 got the other room! All the instructions from Jessica were easy to follow and we had no problems.
The cottage is as described and the location is great. We took advantage of being able to step out of the gate onto the bridleway which meant we could walk with the kids without crossing a single road.

Cottage with character in wonderful location

By Gemma Scott on 05-Apr-2019

Lovely cottage with beautiful fireplace for wood burner. Comfortable for up to 4 people. Can get cold but with fire and plenty of heaters it soon warms up. Absolutely fantastic location in a beautiful valley with multiple walks from your doorstep and a great welcoming local pub. Great views of fields full of lambs too! Host helpful and easy to contact too. Highly recommended.

Cosy Cottage

By Sue Coark on 06-Nov-2018

We still enjoy this cosy cottage after nearly eight years... my husband first book the Blue Cottage for me to recoperate after my knee replacement but we find it so cosy and quiet we keep going back. The recent returb of the kitchen and bathroom have enhanced the cottage for the better.
Would highly recommend the Blue Cottage. Sue and Terry Clark Ashford Middlesex

Wonderful Week!

By Cameron on 27-Oct-2018

Three of us stayed at The Blue Cottage for one week starting 27th October and what a thoroughly excellent time we had. The thatched cottage is just marvelous. it is filled with many features befitting a house so old such as low beams and an inglenook fireplace and very thick walls. While we were there we were blessed with fine weather and although the nights were very cold the cottage remained very warm throughout. We never even used the electric heaters supplied for the bedroom. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could possibly want and the newly refurbished kitchen is a sheer joy to cook in.
The location of the cottage is perfect for that relaxing quiet getaway and is on the outskirts of a very small village, that nonetheless has a charming local pub with equally charming owners and great food. There are a multitude of fine walking paths direct from the front door through some extremely beautiful scenery.
All in all our week at the Blue Cottage was nothing short of perfect. Our thanks to Jessica for the opportunity.

Repeat customer! Wonderful stay with great renovations!

By Fabienne K on 16-Sep-2018

I've visited the blue cottage before and wanted to mention how much I love the changes to the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen was a pleasure to cook in, so much bigger! I also very much enjoyed a long bath in the new bigger bath after a day walking in the beautiful local landscape. This is a lovely, clean and comfortable cottage to stay in, and I hope to visit again!

The Blue Cottage - September 2018

By David Hough on 04-Sep-2018

Lovely rustic thatched cottage in quiet and peaceful surroundings. An ideal "get away from it all". Comfortable sitting room and very well equipped kitchen. Easy walking distance to Church and pub. The Horseshoe Inn has good home cooked fare.

Do stock up with groceries etc before you arrive! However, there is a good store at Sixpenny Handley for essentials.

There are some super walks from the door which your dog will love! Just along the bridleway (accessed from the cottage gate), there are some great views and you can walk round and back into the village on a loop.

We very much hope to stay here again.

Cosy historic cottage

By Westra on 11-Aug-2018

We, dutch family, have spent a week in this historic cottage with 2 adults and 1 child. The cottage is partly original and partly new and/or renovated.

The livingroom is one of the oldest rooms and it takes you back to the old times. The windows are not very large which creates a cosy atmosphere. Other people could consider this as a bit dark.

The kitchen and bathroom are new, very light and very comfortable.
The bedrooms on the first floor reflect also the old times. Exciting for children! There is also a nice garden and an own parking place.

Conclusion: a lovely cosy cottage combining new and old elements.

The cottage was charming, higgledy piggledy, cosy and full of character. Local pub excellent food!

By Sue M on 30-Apr-2017

We wanted piece and quiet and wonderful walks. The cottage was chocolate box pretty and not overly renovated. You felt like you had stepped back in time with the low beamed ceilings, wonky floors and creaky boards. The garden was ideal for the dog who spent most of the time running around outside. The traffic in April was quiet, so we were quite happy walking along the pretty lanes. The owners were very considerate having left some basic groceries and some luxury biscuits so we could have a cuppa when we arrived. Be aware there is nowhere in the village to buy groceries, so worth stopping off for supplies on the way (nearest supermarket 12miles). The local pub serves excellent quality food which is reasonably priced. It is very popular so worth booking. The host and staff are very welcoming. We had the most amazing homemade scotch eggs one lunchtime. Recommend you visit Shaftesbury which is charming and has stunning views. It is peppered with plenty of coffee shops, independent shops and real ale public houses. We would love to visit again.........Sue, Barry and Finn (Hertfordshire).

Thatched roof cottage in quaint countryside village.

By Richard H on 23-Apr-2017

The village of Ebbesbourne Wake in Wiltshire, England, is beautiful, seculded, ancient and has an old church and great pub. Was more off the beaten path than I expected as it took us almost a half hour to get to Salisbury on basically one-lane roads ... to be expected for travelers from the U.K., a little ore exciting for those of us from the U.S. Blue Cottage is undoubtedly as 16th century as described, and as such was a unique experience, tucked away on a wooded lot with birds, flowers and assorted wildlife. Staying there you can just imagine what village life was like long, long ago.

Utterly charming!

By Anonymous on 29-Jan-2017

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Blue Cottage and can't wait to return. It was incredibly peaceful, set on the edge of a small village with a friendly pub that serves generous meals, and backing onto farmland, this oasis of 16th century charm is rustic and cosy. The woodstove and supply of wood, and the pre-laid fire were an added bonus. Comfy memory-foam mattress in the double bedroom, combined with the peace and quiet, ensured we slept like logs.

Cosy, warm, welcoming, family friendly.

By Louise G on 31-Dec-2016

The property was very clean and well maintained. It had all the essentials needed, and the added extras like a ready made fire, extra wood, wifi, a nice bottle of wine and some biscuits made the stay even more enjoyable. The cottage had a very warm, cosy feel about it and was the perfect location for my young family and our dog. The description of the property, facilities and location were very accurate and very well written. The owner was extremely friendly, the directions and information provided were accurate and very helpful. As we booked at the last minute the owner done everything and more to ensure our stay was as comfortable as possible. We loved our time in this property, the cottage was warm, cosy and family friendly, the location was idyllic and the surrounding countryside was perfect for family walks and fun. The local pub served excellent food, served good quality beer and had a lovely landlord and landlady and friendly helpful staff. A perfect place to spend New years eve and we cant wait to go and visit Salisbury again.

Blue Cottage

By Peter on 24-Oct-2016

The cottage was warm and cosy on our arrival and within just minutes we felt very much at home.

It is well equipped with all that you will need for a very comfortable stay.

Being very very old, Blue Cottage is also a really interesting place to stay - after all, it is not often that have the opportunity to experience living in such an old cottage.

The setting is delightfully rural and it's location is very convenient for sightseeing etc.

Very nice and out of the way

By Chris P on 01-Mar-2016

Picked a long weekend in February and was very pleased with the cottage .

Had some nice walks all around the area friendly people around and the Horseshoes pup was not only handy but served some great food and very friendly also.

This is ideal for anyone who wants just a quiet stay in a lovely part of the countryside away from it all.

We will be back.

Rural idyll!

By David & Suzanne R on 23-Feb-2016

The Blue Cottage is a delight - every bit as charming as in the pictures! All the booking arrangements went smoothly, with prompt and friendly attention from Jessica, the owner, and the cottage was warm and welcoming on arrival, with everything we needed for a cosy and comfortable stay. The village pub lived up to its excellent reputation for food and service, and we enjoyed several frosty walks up the surrounding hills - the views of Salisbury Plain are stunning when you get to the top! And Salisbury itself is well worth a visit - head for the Central car park. We would recommend the cottage to anyone who enjoys peace and quiet in the country, and look forward to our next visit.

Lovely stay at Blue Cottage

By Anonymous on 06-Dec-2015

We stayed three nights and would have loved to stay longer, in fact we've already booked for another weekend! It's tucked away in the countryside yet a short drive and you're in Salisbury or Shaftesbury. You can walk to the village pub and further out across fields, with several public walks to follow. The cottage is really cosy, great inglenook fireplace with wood-burning stove. Good size kitchen. The twin bedroom works well, with one end almost separated from the other, so the children have a little privacy. The cottage is full of character, thick walls, thatched roof, plus comfortable furnishings that fit with the character of the cottage. We're looking forward to returning!

Nice holiday

By Frank F on 13-Aug-2015

The cottage is comfortable und very quiet. It is ideal for relaxation and a good starting point for discovering the South of England. It is equipped with all comforts. Especially we appreciated the fireplace on cool evenings. We have enjoyed the holiday very much.

We have just had one of the best weekends away, staying in the Blue cottage. The cottage is even bigger than it looks in the photos, lots of room to move around and relax. The garden is very dog friendly being fenced, also lots of of off road walks available just outside the gate. A lovely quite rural location, with a welcoming pub in the village.

Cosy cottage in Wiltshire

By Kyynmusta on 25-Sep-2014

We stayed for one week in the Blue Cottage in Ebbesbourne Wake, near Salisbury. It was a nice cottage, quite old - very big walls, blue window frames and really interesting and cosy sleeping rooms. The cottage is surrounded by a really nice garden place with fields around - the right thing for people that are looking for a quiet place.

A lot of information about the landscape and the cultural settings can be found in the cottage, which was very helpful. Right beside the cottage starts a bridleway which leads you through the fields - staying in the blue cottage is a good idea if you own a dog as we do.

wonderful cottage

By Marc L on 08-Aug-2014

We stayed here as a family of four for a week. The cottage has real personality, with slopping walls and low ceilings, a fireplace and a lovely shady garden. We saw plenty of birdlife, including many pheasants in the nearby field. Nice to see a family of three cows looking over the fence too. The pub is a couple of minutes away and there is a pleasant walk on the doorstep. I highly recommend this place. We all loved it. The countryside around is some of the best in the UK.

Cosy cottage!

By Sheryl on 16-Apr-2014

We enjoyed our week at Blue Cottage so much. The cottage was cosy and homey and equipped to meet our every need. The setting was quiet and the field outside was filled with lambs. The village is charming and the walks in the area are plentiful and pass through a beautiful landscape.

Our hostess was very friendly and helpful beforehand and her generosity is reflected in the way the cottage is kept for visitors. We would love to stay there again.
