Overview
Description
Railway Crossing Cottage is a charming detached stone cottage, situated in a peaceful rural location in The East Neuk of Fife, close to the villages of Crail and Anstruther. The cottage was originally a crossing keeper’s cottage on the now disused Anstruther to St. Andrews Railway. It has recently been beautifully and sensitively restored and extended by us, providing a cosy and warm holiday retreat for you, your family and friends. A perfect place to relax and unwind. There are 2 bedrooms at the property, a double room and a twin/double room, and a lovely characterful open plan sitting room and kitchen/dining area. The sitting area has a cosy log burner, wooden flooring and comfy leather sofas. The accommodation is very accessible, as it is all at ground floor level, with easy access to the garden via double patio doors.
There is a private hot tub on the decking area, with wonderful views to the surrounding countryside. The garden is mainly laid to lawn and is secure and fully fenced. There is a second sun terrace for relaxed dining, with a wooden table and chairs, sun loungers, sun parasol and barbeque. We have ample parking for 2 cars at the front of the cottage. The property is dog friendly and has the added benefit of free wi-fi.
Railway Crossing Cottage is a perfect location for exploring the quaint fishing villages of The East Neuk, the historic town of St. Andrews and the scenic coastline of Fife. The nearby villages of Crail and Anstruther are wonderful for exploring, with their picturesque fishing harbours, great shopping, pubs/restaurants and numerous tourist attractions. Boat trips from Anstruther to The Isle of May are most popular.
We look forward to welcoming you to our lovely cottage.

Leave ReviewWonderful, peaceful cottage
By Penny on 18-Apr-2025Lovely spacious cottage in a very peaceful location within easy reach of East Neuk coast. We would happily have stayed longer and noticed lots of people mention making return visits - always a good sign. Be aware Google doesn't know you can reach it from the A917 and sends you via the B9171 and down a long stretch of very potholed track. Definitely use the A917 route given in the owners' instructions.
Birthday break
By Chris on 14-Mar-2025We have stayed at railway crossing cottage a number of times now and we are never disappointed it’s a fantastic place and a great location we will definitely return at some point
A happy second stay
By Amy on 21-Feb-2025Our second stay in this lovely cottage. Although we made less use of the outside space in February than we had in June the cosy log burner was a lovely plus. The cottage is very well maintained and well provisioned. The location is so peaceful yet a great staging post for lots of places: we went swimming in Dundee and even had a day in Edinburgh whilst also enjoying the lovely towns and villages of the East Neuk and the fabulous coastal path. We will be back and highly recommend.
Excellent cottage for 2, 3 or 4 in Fife
By Martin on 09-Dec-2024Perfect cottage, hidden from view of onlookers but easy to find and with easy (vehicular) access to Anstruther, Elie, Crail and Pitenweem. Well administered and also dog-friendly! Nice to find milk and wine in the fridge for us. And a simple but effective hot tub under the stars. We may well return.
Review of Railway Crossing Cottage
By Alan on 25-Oct-2024We enjoyed our stay at the above. The cottage was welcoming, cozy, very clean and beautiful throughout. The beds were super comfortable and garden space was excellent. We would like to visit again when the nights are lighter and would recommend to others.
Great little hideaway
By Alan on 13-Sep-2024Lovely little cottage ideally placed to explore the east Neuk of Fife. Plenty of everything to make your stay homely. Interesting to watch the farmers at their day too. Would recommend coming up the road from the east as the western stretch is bumpy.
