Nestled in the pretty Langdale hamlet of Chapel Stile, this 19th Century chic Lakeland retreat takes a picture-postcard setting overlooking the Langdale Valley. This sleepy village is an ideal base with its handy shop and excellent country pub yet an abundance of walks and mountain bike routes from its doorstep.
Step inside Fountain Cottage and you'll fall in love with the traditional character and instantly soak up the contemporary luxuries of a meticulous restoration contrasting the old oak beams, thick walls and stone floors with crisp modern decor.

Contemporary comforts spread over the three floors; sumptuous cottage bedrooms, sleek designer bathrooms and a top floor lounge with a newly installed woodburning stove and a furnished, south-facing balcony for lazy summer brunches or just a cool place to chill out after those hard days on the fells.
Lakeland slate on the outside and lovely mountain and village scenes through almost every window.

Active families will have no need to use their car, couples will relish the romantic location and cosy evenings by the woodburning stove and all will be glad of the short walk to the Good Pub Guide listed Wainwrights Inn.

Although this luxurious Lake District cottage is an outdoor lovers paradise, for those who want to just relax and be pampered the Cottage benefits from membership for two adults at the nearby Langdale Leisure Club. The Club offers a well equipped gym, swimming pool and sauna. Fountain Cottage guests are also able to sign in additional members of their party on the payment of a small day or evening charge. Children under the age of three benefit from free entry.

Come rain or shine whether you are looking for outdoor activity or a peaceful romantic retreat Fountain Cottage offers it all.

The large entrance hall with original flagged stone floor and space for outdoor gear leads upstairs to the excellently equipped Shaker kitchen / dining room which affords fabulous views over Lingmoor Fell. Through to the modern lounge with newly installed wood-burning stove and French doors leading out to the balcony again overlooking Lingmoor Fell.

The romantic double bedroom with a wrought iron bed is located on the entrance level and has its own ensuite with luxury power shower. Also on the entrance level is the luxury family bathroom which offers both a separate bath and power shower cubicle. A flight of stairs leads down to the cosy twin bedroom which has its own outdoor access.

Outside there is a large shed for secure storage of bikes and outdoor equipment. There is parking for 1 car directly outside the cottage with further on lane parking close by.

There is a wide selection of maps, books, guides and information on local activities for your use.

We also accept one small well behaved pet in the cottage.

Absolute Gem

By Tom on 11-Dec-2020

An absolute gem of a place. Perfect distance to Ambleside to feel out of the loop but a pleasent walk /quick drive in to feel connected still. Perfect base to explore the wonderful Langdales any time of year. The kitchen is so well equipped to make the most of it and the living space is perfect with lots of nice little touches. Hunker down in front of the fire when it's wild outside or have it opened up with the balcony when the sun's out. Comfortable double bed (didn't use the twins downstairs) with super soft bedding. The perfect week away.

We could not fault this lovely characterful property

We could not fault this lovely characterful property. Beautiful views from the windows and masses of walks from the doorstep. Handy walk suggestions were left for us and the Covid security was top class. We would definitely like to return.

Tips for other travellers

The inn at Elterwater was a short walk away along the river and very nice. The local shop was very handy for supplies. We loved the walk over Lingmoor Fell but the house is surrounded by walks and cycle routes and one is spoilt for choice. We couldn't hear a sound at night so slept very well. It is only a short car journey from the facilities of Ambleside or Grasmere so is a perfect location.

Comments about this property
The cottage is extremely well appointed, with everything you could need. Very comfortable sofas and beds, and the balcony gets the evening sun for a glass of wine with a view. The amendments to make it Covid-19 safe are impressive, from laminated maps to an Alexa in the lounge so you can play music without touching buttons.

Tips for other travellers
Skip the Wainwrights pub and wander on to the Britannia in Elterwater, very friendly and fabulous food. If it's warm there are great places to hang out by the river, one just beyond the Wainwrights pub but a quieter spot at the entrance to the Baysbrown Farm campsite. The nearby walk up to Stickle Tarn, Harrison Stickle and Pike O'Stickle is my favourite in the lakes. The flatter walk that is on one of the laminated maps that goes via Little Langdale (stop at the Three Shires, another lovely pub), Chesters cafe and shop, and two waterfalls, Colwith Force and Skelwith Force, is also great.

Absolutely beautiful cottage!

By Henry on 18-Jan-2020

Absolutely beautiful cottage! The little treats were a lovely touch and greatly received as I had forgotten our tea bags! The membership to the Langdale is also a great addition to the cottage and very helpful after a day on the fells. We would highly recommend and will be booking again in the future.

We loved our time at Simon and Belinda’s Fountain Cottage.

By Andrew & Claire on 14-Jan-2020

We loved our time at Simon and Belinda’s Fountain Cottage. The place was immaculately clean, quite and well suited for our family of four. The boys loved their space downstairs. The location is great and very convenient for the Lake District. There are plenty of things to do. We would definitely stay again.

This is a great property in a gorgeous location

By Steve on 28-Dec-2019

This is a great property in a gorgeous location. House spotlessly clean and well equipped. We travelled with 2 young children (3&4) and a dog - Chapel Stile was the ideal location with many accessible easy walks, local shop (with everything needed for your stay), walkable pub (wainwright’s inn) and in a great spot for many day trips out.

A great week in a beautiful home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be definitely keen to return one day.

Our second year staying in Fountain Cottage was as good as the first. This is definitely the best equipped & loveliest cottage we've stayed in in Chapel Stile - I could quite happily move in permanently! Hope to return again next year.”

Fountain Cottage was exactly what we were looking for! Such a comfortable, charming home in a secluded part of the Lake District. It had everything we needed, and we loved just sitting by the fire and relaxing while it rained outside. The pub down the road was a blast, and driving to other nearby villages was easy and beautiful. We will definitely be back again!

I can't recommend fountain cottage enough. The location is great for getting and about in the valley and the spa passes are great for a post walk wind down. The cottage is warm and welcoming with all you could need during your stay. The tea, coffee and Lakeland Plum Bread left out for our arrival was a really nice touch too.

Excellent Accommodation, Excellent Location

By on 22-Oct-2016

The cottage was very comfortable all the essentials: dishwasher, washing machine and Wifi. I'm not sure the tumble drier programme of the washing machine was working but the cottage was so warm, clothes dried well on the clothes horse. In fact we needed to turn the heating down. On arrival there was milk, tea, coffee, a packet of biscuits. Washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, washing tablets, towels and tea towels were provided. Details of walks, places to visit and local information all present in the cottage. The Leisure facilities at the Langdale were also top class. Take your own towels or pay £2 each for weekly hire. We only made it once so lost out there. We didn't use the car as we were able to do many walks straight from the cottage. Particularly nice walks were to Grasmere and Ambleside, a different way back each time. What we found very useful was the ability to download the local ordinance survey map onto an iPhones. The village store was very well equipped, everything you could need for the week, but understandably more expensive than a larger supermarket chain. All the cafes and pubs we tried were dog friendly as were the local buses. Both the pub at Elterwater and Chapel Stile itself served decent food. We're a family of 4, children aged 15 and 11 plus a Labrador. He seemed to enjoy the holiday too. We would definitely return to is cottage and would consider buying it if it became available!

Indian summer at Chapel Stile

By on 19-Oct-2016

We spent last week at Fountain Cottage and what a perfect week it was! The cottage is all we could have wished for and more, cosy, warm, and clean with stunning views and surroundings. We love the balcony, and it was used frequently to view the sky at night with our newly acquired telescope. The weather was lovely and warm with only a couple of showers, and even then sun always followed. The local sheep wander around the village and seemed to like the grass outside the kitchen window at the church gate. The co op is just down the road, and very well stocked. We walked along the riverside to the Brittania Inn and Maple cafe, about 15 minutes away but took longer as we were taking photos and sitting by the water enjoying the experience. We ate at the Wainwright's Inn mostly as only 5 minutes walk and very good food, ale, and roaring fire. It gets busy on weekend evenings but we could always find a table and didn't have to wait long for our meals. We had a meal one evening at Stove on the Langdale estate and what absolutely beautiful surroundings there, highly recommended! Don't forget to take a torch with you to light the way along the dark road if you walk down. We visited Ambleside and had lunch at The Fulling Mill which was lovely. We had coffee and cake at The Bluebird cafe on the lakeside at Coniston. We went to Kendal, Ullswater, Windermere, in fact where didn't we go!

Belinda and Simon have supplied all the information you could need in the cottage, along with many books, games, even binoculars. and a torch (see above). Oh and not forgetting the cookies, tea, and coffee left for us. Thank you!

Highly recommend this perfectly located cottage and would love to visit again.

Lovely stay at Fountain Cottage, Chapel Stile ,The Lake District

By on 06-Sep-2016

We had a lovely stay at Fountain Cottage, and felt our hosts looked after us very well from beginning to end, even to leaving some tasty scones to enjoy when we arrived . There was lots of information to look at in the cottage , like suggested walks from the doorstep, and recommended places to eat . We had a couple of wet days ( to say the least !) so we made good use of the spa passes which were kindly left for us to use. The cottage was quirky in that it is on different levels, which added to the character . It was lovely to sit out on the balcony in the evening and watch the sun go down . The property was very clean and well maintained , and equiped with just about everything you could possible need. So a big thanks to ours hosts .

Lovely cottage, great location

By on 16-Jun-2016

Booking process was easy and the owner got back quickly with replies to queries etc....all done by email. Cottage was clean on arrival and as described by the owner.

The location is great, in the quiet village of Chapel Stile. Great walking in the area. Ambleside about 4 miles away.

We had fantastic weather so the highlight of the cottage was the balcony off the living room. We ate breakfast & dinner on the balcony every day. The peace out there on an evening is great. There is a pub (Wainwright's Inn) within 5 mins walk but we preferred one slightly further away, The Britannia Inn which is about 10-15 mins walk away. There is a nice cafe / restaurant called Chesters in Skelwith Bridge which is a really pleasant walk for lunch - takes about an hour.

I would highly recommend the cottage and would consider returning

“This is a perfect cottage for spending a week walking in the Lake District. The cottage is very well equipped and has lots of thoughtful extras which were a delight and greatly appreciated. Clean, very warm and charming and with everything in good, up to date working condition. Very comfortable beds were appreciated after a long day outside! Chapel Stile is a lovely village set in the middle of the Langdales and you can walk everyday from the front door rather than having to take the car out. Wifi in the cottage worked very well which was useful as there is no mobile phone reception. A variety of eating places locally add to the enjoyment and there is a shop within easy walking distance for newspapers and other extras you might want. The service provided by Lakelovers was outstanding with very good communication prior to the stay. Very highly recommended – we will definitely be going back.”
