Covid-19: During these unprecedented times, it has become necessary to change and implement new ways in which we manage and operate at Rock Cottage. In line with recommended practices for rental homes, we have taken the necessary advice to safeguard you, ourselves and our future guests and introduced an enhanced cleaning/sanitising regime. All rooms and their soft furnishings will be sanitised by fogging after each stay.

Rock Cottage stands completely alone overlooking the unspoilt Mawgan Creek of the Helford River. It has been in our family since October 1954 and there is nowhere quite like it. The grounds are very private and extend to an acre, bordering the peaceful waters of the creek on two sides. The wrap around garden is steep in places but leads to a large jetty and foreshore where Peggy, our sturdy rowing dinghy is moored during the main holiday season. You may fish, kayak and paddle board from here or go wild swimming. Children and adults too enjoy crab fishing from the jetty.

The property is beautifully appointed with high quality furnishings throughout, equipped and maintained to very high standards. Rock Cottage accommodates a combination of four adults with two children maximum.

Whatever the weather, the house is warm and inviting as all rooms have full central heating by radiators and wonderful views of the river and garden. The hallway leads to the beamed and carpeted lounge with its original cob walls, window seats and a large copper canopy inglenook. Enjoy a relaxing evening sitting on the large comfy sofa with its matching armchairs listening to music or watching your favourite TV programme. There is a grand selection of board games, puzzles and books also. The kitchen/diner has a picture window, quarry tiled floor, small pantry and all the facilities one needs. The view from here is amazing too. Many guests choose to sit and watch the bird and river life with its ever-changing scenery from either the kitchen or outside on the patio. Here, the morning sun is perfect for breakfast, coffee time, brunch and alfresco meals later in the day. The ground floor luxury bathroom, new for 2020, is beautifully tiled and perfect for a hot shower or a long soak. During the cooler time of year, underfloor heating is set up for you. Upstairs is the Master and Children's bedrooms, both have polished wooden floors with long soft rugs and fabulous views. A couple of paces from the front door is the spacious third bedroom (Garden Room), which comfortably sleeps two adults. As well as an exceptional view, the new zip and link beds give an option of single beds or a large double. There is also a wall mounted 40" television.

Our rates are fully inclusive of electricity, oil (CH), bedding, bath sheets, bath towels, hand and tea towels, bathrobes, luxury toiletries, household essential starter pack, cleaning service, rowing dinghy (available from Easter to end of October), selection of buoyancy aids, baby bath, cot, highchair and changing mat, dog gate and of course Superfast Fibre Broadband.

Dogs: We will accept a maximum of two obedient medium sized dogs, when there are no more than four persons staying in the cottage at any one time, for a small charge of £6 per night each. Dogs should be kept in the kitchen and hallway only as in here the floors are washable. For reasons of hygiene and consideration of other guests, dogs must be kept out of all the bedrooms, including the separate Garden Room, the newly carpeted lounge, and kept off furniture. A dog gate is supplied.

** Due to the extra cleaning and sanitising requirements, entry to the property is from 1700 hours. Departure is 0900 a.m.

**Short Breaks are available out of season. Fully inclusive rates. Please enquire.

**Deposits are 25% of the total rent and final payments are due on or before 60 days of the commencement date.

**A refundable good housekeeping deposit of £200 is required with the final payment.

**Our website accepts debit/credit cards, Bacs/internet banking and PayPal.

Within a short walk from Rock Cottage you will find the thriving Mawgan Stores, your nearest shop, which is well stocked with lots of local produce and just about all you may need during your holiday. On your way you will pass the 12c Church of St Mawgan in Meneage and The Ship Inn. Many of our guests dine at this very popular, well established pub with restaurant or simply stop by for a local ale and then amble back along the lane. Take away fish and chips is available from here too and Mawgan stores sell their frozen meals. In the opposite direction from Rock Cottage, if you cross the ancient stone bridge at Gear and proceed up the hill towards St Martin, you will reach the Gear Farm Pasty shop. The Cornish pasties are made on the premises and are perfect for a lunch time treat. Further on is The Prince of Wales at Newtown St Martin; with very friendly hosts, a big and varied menu to choose from as well as a large garden. Both the Ship Inn and Prince of Wales accept well trained dogs. The location is perfect for exploring the Lizard Peninsula and within a short drive of 15 minutes you will reach some of the areas finest beaches for swimming or body boarding - we are spoilt for choice! Gunwalloe Church Cove, Dollar & Fishing Cove, Poldhu, Polurrian, Kynance Cove, Kennack Sands, Coverack and Cadgwith are all favourites.

As well as the Ship Inn, locally there is the New Yard Restaurant and a Chinese restaurant in Mawgan, The Black Swan at Gweek, The Prince of Wales at Newtown St Martin, the Halzephron at Gunwalloe and the Shipwrights Arms in Helford. At Porthleven there is Rick Steins Restaurant, Kota Kai, Amelies, the Mussel Shoal, Naughty but Ice, cafes and pubs too.

You will find Rock Cottage appealing, with attention to detail in all rooms, your beds made, and personally prepared by Linda and Robin just for you. If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay, in an excellent location with no other properties within sound or sight, then Rock Cottage is your perfect holiday destination. Cosy Cottage in Stunning Location

By Marianne K. on 07-Jan-2020

Pristine property in a hideaway location with extensive grounds including private waterfront and jetty. Rock Cottage surpassed all our expectations. The ever changing views from the kitchen and garden of the tidal river are mesmerising. If you can tear yourself away from the well equipped, cosy cottage, there is so much to do and see within easy reach. The nearby Ship Inn does excellent food in the evenings which is a 10-15 minute walk into the village. There is also a well equipped local shop here. 15 minutes in the other direction from the cottage is Gear Farm. Their award winning Cornish Pasties are not to be missed! Perfect to take on a hike as they stay warm for hours.

We enjoyed exploring and managed to see all the bits of Cornwall we came to see, and a lot more from this base. The hosts have thought of everything and the treats on arrival were very much appreciated!

We will return.

“Peaceful, characterful and relaxing.”

By Miss Geog on 07-Jan-2020

We (2 plus a small dog) enjoyed two wonderful weeks at Rock Cottage in October.

We were greeted with fresh flowers in every room, a tray of very welcoming and tasty goodies in the kitchen and a very, cosy and comfortable Cottage.

We spent our mornings watching the ever-changing scenery of the Helford River. Every morning we were joined by a bird table full of wildlife, which were very happy with the seed provided. As the sun set, we enjoyed cooking in the kitchen which has every piece of cookware needed to cook up a feast if you really wanted to!

Sleeping was easy. The master bedroom was spacious with an incredibly comfortable king bed. Bed linen was luxurious. The lounge was also very comfortable and with the stair gate across the lounge door we could keep an eye of the dog who, quite contently slept in the warm hallway.

The total peace and quiet is really quite remarkable which cannot be described with enough justice. Walking around the beautifully maintained gardens and adjoining woodland, with views of the river from every angle, we were struck by just how quiet it was, with only the odd interruption from owls and foxes at night.

Linda and Robin were very helpful prior to our arrival, with suggestions for places to eat and visit (always useful to have a locals view!) and during our stay, they were only a phone call away if we needed anything.

It seems counterproductive to me to keep praising Rock Cottage, as I’ll not be able to book our next stay before long! It is clear the Cottage is the pride of the family and rightly so, we’re just so lucky the Dandys are happy to share it.

Idyllic Cottage with spectacular views down Mawgan Creek, Helford, Cornwall

By Jillbackathome on 07-Jan-2020

Rock Cottage is located in a beautiful peaceful spot at the head of Mawgan Creek with uninterrupted magnificent views down the estuary. Suitable for families (2 doubles + one twin), it is also an idyllic spot for couples looking for peace: there is a quiet light and airy garden bedroom with comfortable king-sized bed, with picture windows looking down a well-tended lawn to the water’s edge where there is a rowing boat for the use of guests. Very well equipped kitchen, large bath + shower, plentiful hot water, comfortable sitting room with TV +
DVDs and helpful hosts (live approx 2 miles away). Ideally situated for exploring the Helford River and the beautiful Lizard Peninsular with its uninterrupted coastal path. We went in early June...likely also idyllic out of season.

“Beautiful and unique”

By Jeremy B on 07-Jan-2020

There is nowhere like Rock Cottage. None of the photographs, appealing as they are, do justice to the beauty of the view down the creek - once seen, it leaves a permanent impression on the memory. We were lucky enough to discover Rock Cottage years ago and have been back many times. Linda and Robin care deeply about this special place and keep the house and the bright, carefully-planned garden in immaculate trim. In high season you occasionally notice the noise of cars passing on the road behind the cottage but even then there are long periods of deep silence which will be a revelation to many city dwellers. And I haven't yet even mentioned Peggy, the rowing dinghy moored at the bottom of the garden and available to people staying at Rock Cottage. When we stay, we usually go out on Peggy every day - by far the best way to explore the hidden creeks of the lush, green Helford River. I think I've run out of superlatives but Rock Cottage really has everything, especially for people who like nature, peace, quiet, beauty - and boats!

“Lovely”

By 61nikw on 07-Jan-2020

Spent a week at the lovely Rock Cottage. Arrived to some lovely fresh baked bread and scones with jam and cream. Views are really breathtaking and to watch the birds on the river is lovely. Cottage is beautifully kept and is perfectly situated for travelling to all the beaches and attractions around the Lizard area. I will miss seeing the swans every morning. Would recommend.

“Stunningly beautiful & unique setting in exceptional cottage”

By PhysickAng on 07-Jan-2020

You will not find a more uniquely beautiful place to stay in all of Cornwall, and beyond. It is a very special place in a very special spot. Not only is the location amazing (and convenient for travelling around other beauty spots in Cornwall, if you can stand to leave the cottage and the river!) but the cottage itself was cozy, clean and comfortable and the hosts extremely lovely and accomodating in every way. We struggled to leave the cottage most days as we watched the tide of the river rise and fall, took the row boat out for a journey, watched the bird life from our window, and went on fabulous strolls around the river. We have already booked again for next year and plan to make Rock Cottage a regular family holiday for us. Highly recommend!

Idyllic

By Neil Collins on 09-Sep-2019

Really lovely spot, and lovely cottage. Direct access to Mawgan creek a real benefit for us to use our kayaks as well as the grandparents using Peggy.

A couple of BBQs throughout the stay, but every evening, bar the last, sat outside with a stunning backdrop.

Lots of wooded grounds to explore for children

The cottage and annex (Garden Cottage) were pristine.

Our stay will stay long in the memory.

Lovely cottage with amazing views

Lovely cottage with amazing views
5/5 Stayed Jun 2019
Richard C.Chipping Campden, Cotswolds, Gloucestershire,
My wife and I stayed for 10 nights with my parents and had a lovely family holiday. We were so fortunate with the weather meaning we got to enjoy the amazing views across the creek with blue sky and sunshine. We took our kayaks and got up to Helford on high tide, which is a really quaint village with a fantastic pub (Shipwright Arms), which is right on the river. The pub near the cottage (the Ship Inn) is also fantastic which does the best fish n chip takeaway we’ve ever had!

We also explored many of the beaches in the area with Kennack sands being a favourite (best for our dog Sonny) and Mullion and Porthleven are also great little harbour spots, with the latter having great pubs, restaurants and beach shops to explore. Kynance cove is stunning and a must see.

Will miss our mornings waking up at the cottage and watching the woodpeckers, nuthatch and many more visiting the bird table in the garden. Would definitely return.

Fantastic Place to Relax & Unwind - Wonderful!

By Richard A. on 26-Sep-2018

Rock Cottage is a wonderful base for a holiday in Cornwall. The view of the creek at different times during the day will both delight and relax you.

The cottage itself is excellent, furnished to a high standard and has everything you could possibly need for the stay, including "Peggy" a rowing boat moored at your own jetty, so you can go out on the creek, life jackets are provided of course.

We spent many a happy hour on the jetty catching crabs, and there are hundreds to catch, so no one gets disappointed.

Linda, the owner was on hand via phone or email if we needed her and simply let us get on with a wonderful stay, we loved the sweet peas and flowers in the cottage, there were lots of lovely little touches like this.

The location of the cottage is great, just outside of Mawgan village and you can easily reach lots of interesting places within a half hour drive, we managed St Ives, Porthleven, Coverack, Goonhilly Earth Station and nature reserve, plus a bit further and you have Pedn Vounder beach (well worth the difficult cliff descent) and St Michael's Mount.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek is less than 10 minutes away, and you get to go back for free too.

There is a Sainsbury's near Helston , just a short drive away plus Mawgan Stores in the village to, if you want local produce.

Give this place a try and you will not be disapointed, we have returned home relaxed and with happy memories of Rock Cottage and Cornwall.

Perfect location

By John H.Romsey, Hampshire, UK on 26-Sep-2018

It's no exaggeration - you really do get these wonderful views sitting at the table outside, or even from the big window in the kitchen/breakfast room. We spent a good part of every morning and evening just gazing and looking at all the interesting birds, such as Redshanks, Curlew, Little Egrets, even an Osprey!

The cottage itself is immaculate. Everything is new or in very good condition, and it's all there - both filter and cafetiere for coffee, two ovens and a microwave, etc. etc. and lovely bedding.

The local pub has excellent food, but you really do need to book in advance. It's a 15 minute walk there, maybe a bit less on the way back as it is then downhill... And the village shop has a lot of excellent local produce.

The only possible downside to Rock Cottage is that there is only the one bathroom, downstairs. And if you are in the lovely annex bedroom you have to go across the little courtyard to reach it, but you do have the compensation of lovely views of the creek from your bed!

So thank you Linda and Robin, we really enjoyed our stay.

Very well kept and presented property in a stunning setting.

By Alex P. on 26-Sep-2018

We really enjoyed our stay, we were lucky with the weather, so made full use of the gardens and river, our granddaughter had her first boating experience on ‘Peggy’, with the addition of our canoe and Kayaks we all had fun on Mawgan Creek. As I mentioned in the title, the house and gardens are very well kept. Linda has been so helpful, especially since we left a couple of items behind and she kindly posted them on to us. Thank you for our lovely stay

Perfect Cottage, Stunning Views and Ideal Hosts!

By Angie P. on 26-Sep-2018

Our holiday to Rock Cottage was perfect in every way; from the glorious setting on the river, to the cosy cottage with all mod cons topped off with lovely hosts who give a warm welcome and willingness to help in any way. And what a lovely bonus to have a rowboat to take out on the river. It really is a very special place and we can’t wait to get back there!

Lovely little house in idyllic setting

By Rob T. on 19-Jun-2018

This is probably the most fully equipped property we have rented in 40 years of self catering holidays all over Europe. Its also extremely comfortable, well looked after and cleaned. The cottage is quite small with only one toilet, which is on the ground floor, and an open staircase that could be an issue for the elderly, though we are both into our mid 70s and coped OK. Cooking facilities are excellent and the village shop is well stocked. Porthleven has a superb fresh fish shop and Trevaskis Farm shop near Hayle is a wonderful farm butcher. If you are not into that sort of thing there is a village pub/gastropub (the Ship, must book meals) about a mile away up the lane in Mawgan village. The hill will certainly give you an appetite and the walk back is delightful. There are several other food pubs within a few miles including the superb Trengilly Wartha Inn. The garden is bursting with wildlife which can be watched from the comfort of the kitchen table if the weather is imperfect. Its quite a shock to find a normally shy Jay or Greater Spotted Woodpecker looking at you from the bird table only a couple of Metres away. The creek is home to egrets, shelducks, swans, mallards, herons and gulls etc. Even binoculars are provided. I suspect we will be back, legs permitting of course

Absolutely fantastic cottage

By Gary C. on 16-May-2018

Superb location with excellent views down the creek and surrounding landscape. The cottage is spotless with all that you would need and more. It has a lovely homely feel and is full of character. The gardens are spectacular especially as all the spring flowers were in bloom. It's a haven for birdlife which can been seen in the garden & creek. The owner has made the property a home from home with lovely touches such as fresh cut flowers from the garden and a cream tea on arrival. Would recommend Rock Cottage to all and hope to visit again some day.
