Overview
Description
SEXTON'S COTTAGESexton's Cottage is a celebrated artist's cottage with a great deal of charm and individuality, created from two 18th century, flint and brick cottages, one of which originally belonged to the village sexton, hence its name.
It is built of flint, brick and pantile, retaining all its local character, with beamed rooms, and is furnished in sympathetic style, with genuine antiques and a Victorian harmonium. It has a bright, sunny sitting room and modern fitted kitchen-dining room. Original paintings hang on the walls, and there are many unusual features such as small arched niches containing ethnic carvings.
The sitting room has a traditional fireplace, flat screen TV and DVD player . All the rooms face south and are constantly bathed in sunlight. There is a wide, open-tread staircase leading to a bright landing off which are the three bedrooms, bathroom and a separate WC .
The cottage is fully centrally heated. It is carpeted throughout apart from the kitchen, bathroom and WC which are tiled.
The cottage is non-smoking . Pets are only allowed by prior arrangement.
OUTSIDE
It is off the road and very quiet. It has a sunny raised garden with flower borders and fruiting vines and also a secluded orchard with numerous fruit trees including apple, pear, plum, damson, peach and cherry. Guests are welcome to pick and eat the fruit from all the trees and the grapes from the vine.
Parking is in the orchard, where there is room for two cars.
THE AREA
Thornage is an attractive conservation flint village in rolling farmland, only four miles from the sea and two miles from the attractive market town of Holt. Scenes from the famous film "The Go-Between" were shot on the village green. The church is particularly fine and sheep graze in the churchyard. The village pub has unfortunately closed, but there is a delightful gastro pub a mile away in Hunworth, and many other fine restaurants in the area.
Within a very few miles are beaches, cliff walks, sailing, fishing, riding and plenty of architectural interest. It is an excellent base for undisturbed walking and cycling. There is outstanding bird-watching in the many coastal and marshland areas, and the vast, safe sandy beach of Holkham is within easy reach, as well as the quaint old-fashioned resorts of Sheringham, and Cromer (with its famous 'end of the pier show') and the ancient fishing ports of Wells, Blakeney and Cley.
DOWNSTAIRS: Sunny, beamed sitting room (with Victorian harmonium !), bright kitchen-dining room , fully equipped ( fridge, freezer, cooker, microwave, toaster ).
UPSTAIRS: Landing, 1 double bedroom (with fitted cupboards) , 1 twin bedroom, 1 single bedroom, cot available on request, bathroom with basin, bath and shower, separate WC.

N.B. Visitors bring their own duvet covers , sheets , pillowcases and towels.
There is a library with a wide range of books, a good selection of indoor games for adults and children, an extensive video library and a comprehensive file of local attractions .

Stunning traditional cottage close to the best parts of North Norfolk, highly recommended
By Juliet on 28-May-2026My friend and I were looking for a peaceful break in North Norfolk for a few days & Sextons Cottage was the perfect place! If you're looking for immaculate modern accommodation don't book here but if you're looking for traditional, authentic, pretty, slightly wonky & heritage this cottage is ideal, book quickly... A small private garden to sit outside under the roses around the door, a very well stocked kitchen with new cooker & fridge freezer, plenty of pots and pans, crockery, cutlery & utensils - we cooked full meals every day and had everything we needed. Comfortable beds, decent WiFi, hot shower with good water pressure, double room with views over the orchard and a seperate loo...perfect. The cottage is packed full.of older furniture, interesting books, unusual artwork and an old organ should you play! Communication with the owner was swift and courteous and the neighbours were delightful when we had a chat over the gate. Brilliant location for Cley, Blakeney, Sherringham and loads of beaches, trails and interesting places. Siggest owner has a visitors book, I would have left a note saying how happy we were. We will definitely return.
