Overview
Description
Since opening Sticky End, our Grade II Listed thatched holiday cottage in Cottesmore, near Oakham, Martin and Julia have successfully been welcoming guests since 2006.Rutland is truly an unspoiled little gem of a county in beautiful middle England. 'Multum in Parvo', the apt motto of the County of Rutland translates from Latin as 'Much in Little', in fact, the same is absolutely true of Sticky End.
We have made our thatched holiday cottage an 'extension of our own home', positioned at the high end of the holiday let market. Guests always comment very positively regarding how extremely well equipped & furnished Sticky End is......"more than just a holiday home'".
Grade II Listed Sticky End is located in the busy and bustling conservation village of Cottesmore in England's smallest county, Rutland, a truly unspoiled rural gem in the heart of Middle England. Rutland Water, along with the surrounding countryside and villages, provide a beautiful back drop for sailing, water sports, fishing, cycling, bird watching, British Bird Fair, Burghley House (home of Burghley Horse Trials), golf and walking.
Cottesmore village enjoys a friendly pub, The Sun Inn, as well as an excellent village shop/Post Office, a Fish & Chip shop and garage/petrol station.
Sticky End is an ideal base for exploring the region, including the nearby busy market public school towns of Oakham (5 minutes drive) and Uppingham (15 minutes drive), and is only 10 miles from historic Stamford.
Traditional country pubs, stately homes such as Belvoir Castle, magnificent Burghley House (home of the Burghley Horse Trials) and National Trust properties including Belton House are within a short drive, whilst local shopping is refreshingly 'unique & antique'.
Centrally heated throughout with an open Inglenook log fire place in the lounge, electric oven and gas hob, microwave, larder fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, Smart TV, complimentary WiFi, all utilities, quality bed linen and towels and a basket of logs are included in rental.
Perfect for romantic breaks and get aways!

Leave ReviewA Most Enjoyable Stay
By Robin & Rosemary (Suffolk) on 03-Jul-2025We've had a most enjoyable stay at Sticky End and hope to return in the Autumn. Thank you Martin and Julia for your attention to detail and your welcome cakes and milk.
Thoroughly Enjoyable Stay
By John & Sylvia (Kent) on 28-Jun-2025We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Rutland and the cottage. We also very much appreciated the many extra touches.
Wonderful Stay in a Beautiful Cottage
By Lorna * Rob (Liverpool) on 21-Jun-2025Wonderful stay in a beautiful cottage, well equipped with everything you could need and more. Milk and cakes very much appreciated! Lovely circular walk at Exton although first stretch of footpath very overgrown to Cuckoo Farm. Good mooch around Uppingham & then walk from Stoke Dry to the beautiful village of Lyddington - Bede House & Old White Hart Inn. Ambled around Barnsdale Gardens followed by a cruise on the Rutland Belle and then a walk around the Hambleton Peninsula. Topped off with great food and drink at The Finch's Arms in Hambleton village and then a stop at The Sun Inn (Cottesmore) for drinks. Walk up to Hambleton Bakery for breakfast approx 20 minutes, walk around Oakham. Visit to the castle , drinks and lunch at The Grain Store Brewery and a circular walk to Swooning Bridge. No trip to Rutland would be complete without a visit to the iconic Normanton Church, then a stroll along the shore. Lunch at The Horse & Jockey in Manton. Then a wander down the Yew Tree Avenue at Clipsham. Excellent food and drink at The Sun Inn, Cottesmore. Stamford well worth a visit - good place for some retail therapy. Took Martin's advice and parked at Burghley House (free) and walked into Stamford. Good food in the Admiral Hornblower in Oakham. This has been our first visit to Rutland but it was better than we expected - so much to see and do without having to travel too far. Sticky End is the perfect place to stay, so clean and comfortable & well equipped - so many extras, everything you could need and more! The flowers and cakes were a lovely touch & much appreciated. We don't want to go home but we will be back!
Thank you for a wonderful stay
By John & Lesley Knight (Kent) on 28-May-2025Thank you for a wonderful stay at Sticky End. The cottage is fully equipped with everything anyone could possibly need. A very pretty village and a well stocked shop, and not forgetting The Sun Inn where we could not have been made more welcome - fabulous food too. Barnsdale Gardens are a must if gardens are of interest - so many ideas to be had and a great restaurant too, albeit choices were limited due to staff shortages. Having the week here enabled us to spend time with our friends who live in the area. We had a fabulous time and will most definitely be back. Thank you Martin and Julia.
Yet Another Wonderful Stay
By Jackie, Gill & Ian, West Sussex & Derby on 13-Apr-2025Yet another wonderful stay at Sticky End. this time we discovered the Yew Tree Avenue in Clipsham. It's a lovely stroll with very few people and lots of wildlife ; we saw deer, pheasants and lots of birds of prey. Already looking forward to our next visit. Felt like coming home - we've has a WONDERFUL comfy stay at Sticky End cottage with absolutely everything provided. Thanks so much :) We'd recommend strolling down to The Sun Inn for a drinks & delicious meal, and the Village Shop is extremely well-stocked.
