Description

Located in Smailholm in the Scottish Border Country, Bread Oven Cottage provides the ideal base in which to relax and unwind.

This B listed historic cottage provides comfortable and welcoming accommodation throughout the year. The cottage has been fully renovated and is furnished with contemporary furniture complementing the ancient fabric and character of the building.

Facilities include an open plan lounge with a wood burning stove, a well equipped kitchen, dining area and two unique bedrooms.

The master bedroom can be configured either with a Superking double or Twin beds and has a large ensuite shower room with toilet and washbasin. The smaller downstairs bedroom features the original Bread Oven and fireplace as well as a Kingsize double bed with adjacent private shower room with toilet and washbasin.

Full wi-fi controlled and zoned central heating, LED lighting and low energy appliances throughout ensure the cottage is as eco friendly as we can make it whilst retaining its historical character and charm.

The pretty enclosed garden has a sunny central seating area close to the old stone well once used to supply the property and its generations of past residents. There is parking for up to two guest cars within the garden gates.

Our website includes information on special offers and a link to our comprehensive online guest information folder which you can download or view online. It also features more pictures of the accommodation, many guest reviews and some suggestions from the long list of things to do and places to see in and around the cottage.

Located in the small village of Smailholm and nestled in the Scottish Borders midway between the market town of Kelso and ancient Melrose, Bread Oven Cottage is ideally placed as a base for many activities.

The Borders are famous for historical abbeys, ancient castles, magnificent country estates, walking, cycling, fishing and shooting, not to mention the glorious scenery and coast. History and rolling scenery abound and yet the cottage is also less than an hour away from Edinburgh and about two hours from Glasgow. The Borders Railway is just 6miles away in Tweedbank with trains every 30minutes or so into Waverly Station at the centre of Edinburgh between the sights and sounds of the new and the old towns.

Unfortunately due the entry step down and internal staircase the cottage is not suitable for wheelchairs. Please also be aware that the floors are not all flat due to the age and character of the building.

Short Term Let licence SB-00324-F, 4 Guests, EPC rating C.

Amazing cottage.

Clean, comfortable and has everything you need. The welcome pack was a really thoughtful touch - we especially loved the warm bread and homemade shortbread! Andy and Sue were really helpful throughout our stay and their app was so handy to make the stay extra special. Will definitely return

The cottage is perfect. Renovated to a VERY high standard and lacked nothing. We had a great time there despite the weather. The hosts provided guidebook in the form of an app that you can download to your phone which was one of the most comprehensive I have seen and was very useful in terms of local restaurants and things to do. A great place for a short home from home break.

It was beautiful. Thanks for the welcome package. It had everything we needed.

A stylish spacious upstairs accommodation which suited our outdoor adventures.

We choose Bread Oven Cottage to stay for 10 nights as a central base with a garden and secure bike storage; to spend 6 days walking the Borders Abbeys Way using the car and local buses, cycling a myriad of off road tracks and bridleways and 2 Saturday morning Parkruns near Kelso. I had previously stayed there for 4 nights in January, so knew what to expect ~ excellent hospitality from the owners who live nextdoor, stylish interiors of furnishings and fabrics, a walk-in shower and a beautiful garden to sit in after walking and cycling, listening to the varied birdsong. Very relaxing, which made our adventures all the more pleasing. Thankyou.

We stood with pleasure.

We stood for a second time with Andy & Sue. The Cottage let us feel to be home again - very cosy in a high standard. We will definitly book for a further stay as there is soooo much to explore in this „unknown“ beautiful Scottish Borders. Thank you so much for your hospitality.

Five star. It couldn't be better!

Everything is still as good as our first visit in June 2021, and we just keep returning! It couldn't be better. Spotlessly clean, and Andy and Sue great hosts. A welcome pack includes home baked bread and Scottish shortbreads, and they are delicious. I would definitely recommend a stay here, and it is also in a perfect position for exploring the surrounding areas.
