This charismatic and distintly lucxurious Lakeland cottage is a worthy winner of the Tourist Board 5 star. Believed to be over 400 years old, Crag Head Cottage has a divine location within the tiny hamlet of Clappersgate – only a mile from vibrant Ambleside and providing a gateway to the breathtaking Langdale Valley. Retaining all its ‘olde worlde’ charms, this property has been refurbished with such impressive attention to detail that you’ll be won over the moment you enter.A captivating fireplace, pretty window seats and traditional country kitchen (with an Aga at its heart) are perfectly enhanced by designer furnishings, stylish presentation and a touch of contemporary chic. It's hard to put into words, but be assured that every corner of this property, including the delightful patio garden, is as pretty as the scenery.

Location
For a peaceful, but perfectly convenient Lake District cottage holiday, especially for keen walkers, Clappersgate is a wonderful location. The tiny hamlet is only a mile from shops, Windermere lake shore attractions and restaurants in Ambleside, nestled at the entrance to the breathtaking Langdale Valley. Inspiring scenery, renowned Lake District walks on the Landgale Pikes and vibrant village life are therefore all within incredibly easy reach.
Ambleside is noted as the 'gem of the Lake District', thanks to its sublime location on the northern shore of Lake Windermere, it's friendly local character, and also its distinctly cosmopolitan feel. Lose-yourself shops, tempting delicatessens, cosy Lakeland pubs and acclaimed Lake District restaurants are all part of the hustle and bustle of this memorable village.
The Langdale Valley is the most photographed part of the Lake District National Park, and you'll soon see why. Wander through breathtaking scenery, untouched and barely inhabited, bar a few excellent country pubs and a scattering of traditional Lake District cottages.
To explore the wider reaches of the Lake District, a holiday cottage in Clappersgate provides an excellent base. Between Ambleside and Langdale on the A593, you're ideally placed to also explore Grasmere, Hawkshead and Coniston.

By Corinne on 14-Sep-2025Everything was pretty much perfect. All you needed was there to have a very enjoyable stay. Comfort in lounge and bedrooms was very good and location of the property perfect for nearby lakes of Windermere Rydal and Grassmere. Perfect for a family or couples.
Would definitely stay there again

A delightful cottage
By Wendy on 20-Jul-2025A delightful cottage. Exceptionally clean and well equipped with an abundance of books, DVDs, maps and local guides to enhance your stay. The AGA is a real bonus and the stable door adds to the overall charm of the property. Ambleside is a short walk away so one could easily stay here without a car. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage. If only I could have packed the kitchen and pantry - it really is the heart of this country home.
A gorgeous cottage in a great location.

We had an AMAZING time at Crag Head
By Reviewed by Doug, 27th April 2025 on 27-Apr-2025We had an AMAZING time at Crag Head. The cottage was so clean and cozy. It was close to everything, even our own little trailhead up to Loughrigg. The notes were user friendly and kind, making living in a different country (were Canadian) as seamless as possible. Hope we can come again.
Highly recommend this cottage
By B Jones on 11-Apr-2018Crag head cottage is simply lovely, it has everything you could think of, and more. I adored using the aga. The kitchen is very well equipped and a joy to use, the table in there comfortably sits 6. The courtyard garden is gorgeous, we were lucky enough to have nice weather, so we could sit out there. All 3 bedrooms are good sized and has lovely bedding. Ambleside pier is within easy walking distance and offers ferry departures, ice cream parlours and a pub with beer garden. I would recommend this cottage to anyone wishing to have a relaxed break in the Lake District. I will definitely book again.
