Description
Cook's suite is a stunning large ground floor apartment with its own private outdoor space, ideal for families and pets, set within the old Victorian kitchens of grade II listed Moreton House. The house lies on the outskirts of the historic port town of Bideford in the beautiful north Devon countryside near the coast at Westward Ho! The apartment boasts stylish period features with every modern luxury and convenience, and provides the ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of North Devon.
This suite has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a private enclosed courtyard with firepit, sheltered outdoor seating and BBQ dining area. There is dedicated off-street parking, right outside the entrance, and the apartment is all on ground-floor level, with easy and level access throughout. The main room is a large (45m2) open-plan kitchen/dining/lounge room, with a range cooker built into the old Victorian kitchen fireplaces, traditional butler sink, oak surfaces, farmhouse table and dresser. There is comfy leather seating around a 55" smart TV, with high-speed WiFI and blu ray but also a selection of family games and puzzles.
The master bedroom has a superking sized four-poster bed, with optional daybed, or space for a toddler bed or cot. Period features include large fireplaces, and the ensuite bathroom has roll top bath, separate walk-in shower, underfloor heating and heated towel rail. The second bedroom can be set up as a second master with superking bed, or as a twin with two singles. A second bathroom has a walk in shower and traditional style washstand sink.
Pets are welcomed, and both two-and four-legged guests have free run of 5 acres of mature landscaped gardens, with hidden BBQ areas, gazebo, carved animals, fire circles, seating, picnic spots, play equipment, mud kitchen, hobbit house, croquet lawn, swings and slides, all set among mature trees and a peaceful traffic-free setting that belie its convenient location just 5 minutes from the centre of town. There is an indoor play room for children, and access to function rooms, billiard rooms and private dining rooms can be arranged for those special occasions.
Bideford on the Torridge estuary has a charming mediaeval bridge, Quayside shops and cafes, and regular ferry service to Lundy island. Just minutes from Appledore Village, surfing at Westward Ho!, the Southwest coast path, Tarka trail cycling and walking route; a short drive to Clovelly, the dramatic Hartland Peninsula and the beaches of Saunton and Croyde, and with easy access to Dartmoor or Exmoor, the house is ideally placed to enjoy all the varied attractions of North Devon. Situated within a half mile of the A39 Atlantic highway, there is easy access from major driving routes and onward excursions to the North Cornwall coast, meaning you don't have to navigate those tiny country lanes unless you want to.

Leave ReviewAn absolute gem of a find
By C Freer on 11-Jul-2023An absolute gem of a find, the accommodation was exceptional, spacious, roomy very clean and with a top quality look and feel, they had though of everything, lots of storage space for clothes and the kitchen equipment and facilities were so well equipped. We loved playing croquet and practicing slack lining in the garden as well as playing our own family cricket match every night on the large lawn. The key pad entry to the accommodation made it so easy, no keys to fight over or misplace. The indoor games room was also excellent with table tennis and air hockey. We were the only people there during the half term in June and the weather was stunning, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Highly recommend staying here, the price is fantastic value for money. Helen met us when we arrived but although they live in the house we felt very self contained and really didn't see them, however it was nice to know they were there if we needed anything. The availability of SUP's and all various other fun water sports stuff was a real bonus. We will be returning.
Outstanding value
By R Buttle on 20-May-2025Outstanding value in beautifully converted Georgian House. We had a fab short break (4 nights) in The Cooks Suite. I really cannot fault this property all the key elements were top end, good super king mattress, excellent bathroom, well equipped kitchen all presented in wonderful surroundings. A real 5 star experience which is hard to find in self catering lets. Our host Helen was super helpful and was a delight to deal with (we booked direct).

By Simon Reed on 23-May-2021Brilliantly equipped large apartment (Cooks suite), beautifully designed and improved from original cook's accommodation. Open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area has all mod-cons stylish bedrooms with bath ensuite and super shower. Ample space for everyone, including the dog. beautiful grounds including hidden fire pit room in middle of rhododendron bush! extensive grounds for walking and playing (croquet, etc) Fabulous site for visiting Westward Ho, Bideford Great support/service from H&H, really helped our stay including new board games for the rain affected days. Other tips - North Devon Wake park, Atlantic Gin tasting session
A brilliant place to stay
By Annie and Mike on 07-Sep-2020Moreton House is special. The apartment we stayed in had been beautifully renovated and was a lovely space to be in and relax. It was well equipped and the beds and sofas were very comfortable. Moreton House is up a drive away from the road and as a result was very peaceful. We had the use of a lovely courtyard as our personal outdoor space but also enjoyed wandering around the beautiful grounds. Helen and Harvey were great - there to welcome you on arrival, on hand to help if needed anything but otherwise invisible. They seemed to have thought about everything, including a cold beer and cream tea for us in the fridge. The apartment was immaculately clean and we felt completely safe given the current Covid environment.
A week in a country house
By Bryan and Jenni Portman on 26-Jul-2020We had a fabulous visit to Moreton House. Our accommodation At The Cook’s Suite was superb. Spacious with a perfect mixture of new and traditional styles which gave a wow! factor as soon as you arrived. The courtyard was also large and spacious and for our own use and we enjoyed BBQ’s and the use of the ‘fire pit’ on cool evenings. Very special. The owners were warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They clearly are proud of what they have created at Moreton House and justly so. Highly recommended!
Amazing apartment and beautiful beaches
By RebeccaK on 11-Nov-2019We felt very welcome during our stay in the luxurious Cooks suite at Moreton house, the apartments have been extremely well done and there is lots of space for a family of 4. We stayed a weekend but could have easily stayed a week or more, there are plenty of nice beaches and restaurants close by and many lovely walks and sights to explore. Cannot recommend it enough!
