Description

The Bakehouse suite is a characterful self-contained studio apartment within a grade II listed country house. The Bakehouse offers pet-friendly ground floor accommodation with direct access to the gardens and car parking.

These cosy ground floor rooms were once part of the Victorian kitchens, with the original cast iron bread oven still in place. The suite has its own private deck area right outside, with firepit, BBQ and seating/dining space and dedicated off-street parking right nearby, the Bakehouse provides a well-equipped galley kitchen with window-seat breakfast bar, small dining and lounge space and huge walk in shower, making it an attractive alternative to a hotel room.

Moreton House is situated on the outskirts of Bideford in the beautiful north Devon countryside near the coast at Westward Ho! Though the suite is small, guests benefit from the additional amenity spaces, surf/bike cellar, indoor play room, and large gardens of Moreton House. Ideal to take in conjunction with another of our Victorian wing apartments (see our website for full details), or just a perfect getaway space for two, for a romantic mini-moon or a base for an outdoors adventure holiday taking full advantage of the watersports, or the biking or hiking trails that lie within easy reach.

Bideford is known as the "little white town", nestled on the Torridge estuary with its charming mediaeval bridge, Quayside shops and cafes, and regular ferry service to Lundy island. Just minutes from Appledore Village, surfing at Westward Ho!, the Southwest coast path, Tarka trail cycling and walking route; a short drive to Clovelly, the beach at Westward Ho!, the dramatic Hartland Peninsula and the beaches of Saunton and Croyde, and with easy access to Dartmoor or Exmoor, we are ideally placed to enjoy all the varied attractions of North Devon. We are within a half mile of the A39 Atlantic highway, giving easy access from major driving routes and onward excursions to the North Cornwall coast.

The suite can be booked alone, or in combination with other apartments to give an additional bedroom with a little extra independence. Contact us for combination pricing. Private dining or function rooms can be booked by arrangement. Store room, wash down area and workshop available for surf-boards and bikes, with some available for guests to borrow. Well behaved pets are welcome. Concierge and catering services available.

Stylish and Peaceful Retreat

By Lucinda Corby on 12-Jun-2021

Beautifully laid out, comfortable and really well equipped apartment - I loved the way the historic features of the building are incorporated into the design of the room - plus the use of a private outside seating/dining area increased the sense of space. The apartment is located close to Bideford town centre, South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail so plenty to do but it felt like a real treat to return to the stunning grounds of Moreton House each day. I took advantage of borrowing a bike during my stay, which is another thoughtful touch provided by the owners. I honestly couldn't fault anything!

Dreamy Devon

By Mr & Mrs Billington on 10-Aug-2020

We had the most wonderful time in Devon. The apartment was so well decorated and comfortable to stay in. It was great that we was able to bring our dog too. We had a lovely private outdoor area and enjoyed exploring the garden. The owners were lovely and had thought of everything, and were even sweet enough to provide our dog with a couple of blankets! The apartments are near plenty of wonderful beaches and places to eat. We look forward to staying here again.

Our week at Moreton House

By Jane Waring on 05-Sep-2020

The Bakehouse Suite is a smart and very well equipped apartment about 40 minutes walk from Abbotsham Cliffs and the South West Coastal Path. It has extensive and very attractive grounds. We were greeted on arrival by Harvey who gave us a brief tour of the accommodation. The owners had left us a welcome gift of cider, beer and a cream tea, plus a vase full of gorgeous roses, lilies and sunflowers, which was a lovely touch! It’s clear that a great deal of thought has gone into the decor and equipment, this is especially the case in the kitchen, which has all mod cons & a great selection of cooking utensils. The wet room is fab and the bed was very comfortable. I normally hate pillows on holiday, but these were great! We went as a couple, but Moreton House would also be a very good place to stay if several families or groups of friends wanted to stay somewhere together, as there are various different sized apartments. During the week we needed to ask a couple of technical questions and Helen’s response was quick and friendly every time. Moreton House is located up a long drive, so it’s beautifully quiet. However, as the driveway comes out onto a road with no pavements, walking anywhere locally is tricky and it’s only really possible to get anywhere by car,. We found one walk that leads to the cliffs via a country lane directly opposite the drive. Having said that, there’s plenty to see just a short drive away and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. One minor caveat was the outside seating area, which isn’t very private or attractive, as it is right next to the designated parking places, so we were sitting next to our parked car. I’m sure that can be remedied with some trellis and climbing plants to make a screen. It certainly didn’t spoil our stay. There’s still a huge amount of work to be done on the property, but if it’s all done with the same attention to detail and extra touches as the Bakehouse, I think Helen & Harvey will find plenty of takers!
