Overview
Description
Les Merles is a newly converted farmhouse barn in a quiet rural hamlet. We are located in northern Burgundy and well placed for visiting the many local historic sites including the chateaux of Druyes les belles Fountaines, Saint Fargeau, and the Guédelon project. The Historic bascillica of Vezelay is a 40 minutes’ drive west into the Morvan and to the north you will find the vineyards of Chablis. Our local market towns are Toucy and Saint Sauveur (birth-place of the writer Colette) and in the summer months the surrounding villages often hold weekend ‘Vide-Greniers’ – Flea markets-and Fêtes (La Sauvin is the second sunday of september). The surrounding countryside is marked with ‘Randonée’ footpaths for walks through woods and farmland and there is swimming and canoeing at Lac du Bourdon and on the rivers Yonne and Cure.
The house is a spacious self-contained converted barn attached to our traditional 18th century farmhouse. Newly converted using local materials of pière de Bourgonge with oak floors and original beams. The private garden is 300 m2 and includes a terrace equipped with outdoor table, chairs and parasol.
The entrance is through the garden into an open-plan large kitchen /dining/ living room (36 m2) fully equipped with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, large cooker. There is a laundry room with washing machine, and separate toilet. Upstairs an open plan hallway leads to a large living room (32 m2) with huge picture window, overlooking open pasture, furnished with a large double, sofa bed, wood burning stove and TV. There are two bedrooms (24 and 16 m2). The large one has 1 double bed (160 x 200 cm) and 1 single divan bed; The smaller one has 1 double bed (160 x 200 cm). The bathroom has an Italian walk-in shower and there is an independent toilet.
Internet is available throughout the house. All linens and towels are provided. Sleeping is for a maximum of 7 people (2 bedrooms and living room sofa bed). Stairs make it unsuitable for people with mobility problems and there is a no pet policy. Due to our rural location, a car is an essential requirement. We are 2.5 hours drive from Paris and the nearest main line station is Auxerre (45min).

Leave ReviewA visit to Guedelon Castle
By Francis Grandguillot on 05-Apr-2025We live in Normandy and came to visit Guedelon Castle, a medieval building project begun in 1997 using traditional tools and construction methods - a fascinating place. Our host Cyril also recommended the Romanesque abbey of Vezelay and Saint Fargeau Castle, which are both worth visiting. Cyril and his wife were welcoming and helpful. The gîte is spacious, bright, and comfortable; in April, the flowering cherry trees add charm. It's a great base to explore Burgundy’s countryside and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
