Perfect seclusion in the perfect location
By Helen on 20-Sep-2024This was our third stay in Bridge Farm Cottages and our second in Stanley Ghyll. We love it even more each time. My husband suggested I tone it down a bit in this review (I went on at length last time) lest everyone wants to go and we can't get in again - I shall not heed his caution. The tranquil joy of Boot restores the soul, and this is the perfect cottage in which to do so - its detachment and aspect away from the others, together with its private garden, are ideal for the introverted wanting-away-from-everyone traveller. That the velux looks out towards Dalegarth Station and you hear Lal' Ratty's whistle from the garden and see his steam as he sets off is just magical. Don't be put off by size - it is small, but very well formed: we never feel that we're tripping over each other and there is space for boots and walking clobber etc. The kitchen's storage space is actually pretty impressive for the size of cottage and the fridge and freezer generous (we fitted in a week's food and drink, no problem - stop at Booths in Ulverston en route). The Boot Inn next door was fantastic this time - really superb beyond-gastro-pub-quality food, beautifully prepared, and with a great vibe; we also popped in for a post-walk pint. We used our car once, for Crinkle Crags (ascent from Wrynose Pass - wholly recommended), but otherwise all our walks started from the doorstep, including Green Cragg, Miterdale, Eel and Stony Tarns... which was just joyous. Greg and co. have set everything up perfectly and we were hugely gratified that the few constructive suggestions that we'd made last time had all been implemented since - that's really impressive host service and means I have none to make now (except I couldn't for the life of me find a pair of scissors...)! The extensive pre-arrival info and welcome book in the cottage tell you all you need to know about practicalities and are totally straightforward so there are no surprises or mismatched expectations (e.g. there's no mobile phone
Delightful cottage in Eskdale Valley
By Amanda on 21-Oct-2024Stanley Ghyll Cottage is a delightful small cottage, suitable for 2 people, in the beautiful Eskdale Valley. It's well equipped, comfortable, with good Wi-Fi, and a great place for a long weekend escape. It's within easy walking distance of a nice pub, scenic water mill, and the Eskdale-Ravenglass small-bore railway (worth a trip!). There are great walks in the area and it's not far from the stunning Wast Water area. The host has gone out the way to provide a good information booklet containing, not only detailed information about staying in the cottage, but also nearby activities - much appreciated. All and all, being able to come back to this comfy cottage after a day out was a real pleasure.
Gorgeous
By Kathryn on 07-Jun-2025Our second time staying at Stanley Ghyll & once again we loved it. Small but perfectly formed with everything you need. The sofa & bed are comfy, the shower is great, there’s sky tv & WiFi. You don’t need to cook because there are 2 wonderful pubs on the doorstep. The local area is beautiful & peaceful. Even being stuck inside during a thunderstorm was a pleasure. Can’t wait to go back..
Would recommend to friends and family
