Overview
Description
The house is a Grade II* listed sixteenth century house with a rambling garden in a hamlet in the Dartmoor National Park in South Devon.Offering accommodation for up to eight people, the house is at the south end of a range of three dwellings, and has views across fields and moor. It is full of historical interest and original features, with carved and painted beams, mullioned windows, granite fireplaces, a stone spiral staircase, recessed window seats, and many other interesting nooks and crannies to explore. Due to the staircase, the house is not really suitable for toddlers.
Comfortably but not luxuriously furnished, it is a much loved family house with a very welcoming atmosphere, showing some signs of wear and tear (not everything matches!), filled with paintings, antiques, curios, books, maps and games. With the south moor and winding Dart valley on its doorstep, it is an ideal base for walkers and there is also a wide range of activities for children in the area. The south Devon coast is within an hour’s drive.

Leave ReviewSo peaceful and a lovely garden too
By Sarah Bowden on 20-Jun-2024Beautiful homely cottage in great location on Dartmoor. So peaceful and a lovely garden too. So much to see and do locally. Climb the tors, swim in the dart, seek out the great food. We had a brilliant time. Thanks Will.
We felt privileged to come and stay!
By Alexandra Malm on 06-Aug-2024We had a wonderful time in what is clearly a much loved family home. We felt privileged to come and stay! The surroundings are beautiful, this is a fantastic place for people who love nature and wish to relax in a quiet environment. We loved walking across the fields for a cool swim in the river. Our hosts were very friendly and gave great recommendations.
Fantastic huge cottage, steeped in history, oozing character
By Nichola Ronchetti on 12-Sep-2023We''ve just had 7 glorious days staying at this fantastic huge cottage, steeped in history and oozing character. The setting was perfect, really close to the River Dart for fantastic wild swimming spots, water activities and walking. The lovely walk to the Tavistock Inn was done quite a few times! I''d thoroughly recommend for a large family gathering in beautiful surroundings.
Beautifully decorated, very well located
By Catherine on 29-May-2022A beautifully decorated, well equipped, spacious and comfortable house surrounded by very peaceful countryside. We loved the historic features of the house and found it immensely peaceful, with its pretty garden and beautiful woods and river nearby. Our kids loved being able to play safely outside with no cars around. The house is very well located for trips to Dartmoor, Exeter, the Tamar valley and the seaside - we spent a lovely day on the beach at Bigbury.
Tons of character, we were enchanted
By Imogen on 27-Apr-2022Our family had a wonderful stay at Cresson Hayes. The house has tons of character and history, we were enchanted with it straight away. The rooms are even nicer than pictured, each one has a lovely view. The garden is typically English and welcoming. As it is spring time there are foals, lambs, calves, etc everywhere around, and we had many good walks as well as a nice chat with the neighborhood farmer. The house is well equipped with maps and books about the area. We enjoyed sitting on the terrace in the morning listening to the birds, and building a good fire in the evening as we played board games. As a bath person, I also appreciated the tub. As with all very old houses there are some low beams, so the taller men in our family (6’2” and 6’4”) had to mind their heads in certain doorways. That said, they would happily return to stay again, as would the rest of us. It’s a very unique and special place in a beautiful setting. Thanks for hosting, we’ll be back!
We are already talking of returning...
By Helen on 06-Jun-2022A great space for our group of seven, spanning three generations. Everyone could be together or separate as there''s oodles of space. The house is quirky, cosy and warm even when it''s chilly outside and the garden is beautiful ( wonderful for adventures). We had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. There is lots to do in the area too. The other reviewers have spoken about the stairs and the parking : we didn''t find these a problem , but some groups might, if not aware. We are already talking of returning...
