Overview
Description
Fishleigh Farm and The Old Dairy holiday cottageWe are so sorry that we have not been able to welcome any of you to The Old Dairy so far this year! For every farmer the seemingly incessant rain and wind and water have almost been too much; we are just thankful we have not been flooded. However, we are VERY muddy here and the fields are water-logged, so we have had to postpone opening to guests for another month. The daffodils, snowdrops and primroses are flowering and hazel catkins are blowing in the wind! Spring is on its way.
So read on and find out about The Old Dairy:
If you need to relax, get away from it all or ‘Escape to the Country’ – then the Old Dairy at Fishleigh Farm is the perfect choice for your holiday.
The cottage has been converted from an old barn, and gives single storey accommodation, which provides flexibility of sleeping arrangements, with a double bed in the bedroom plus space for a travel cot, child’s cot and a junior single bed. A Z-bed can be fitted neatly into the corner of the living room for an extended family.
Set in the heart of Devon’s Ruby country, Fishleigh Farm lies along a private track on the edge of Black Torrington village. There are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, sunsets, sunrises and the occasional rainbow. This part of Devon has some of the darkest night skies in the UK and is perfect for star gazing.
The Old Dairy is set in the centre of a working farm; often the only sounds are sheep baa-ing or birds singing and perhaps the sound of a tractor from adjacent fields. You will have wild-life quite literally on your doorstep; An enclosed sunny garden provides your own private space with a grassy area, patio and table and chairs for alfresco meals.
The front door leads into the spacious open plan living room with a view through the patio doors to the garden. It is comfortably furnished giving everything you should want for a relaxing stay: sofa, easy chairs [TV Wi-Fi and radio if you really don’t want to get away from it all] with plenty of books, maps and puzzles.
There is ample space just inside the front door for hanging outdoor coats, wellies and walking boots – essential items even in sunny Devon! Whatever the weather, the cottage is kept cosy with easy-to-control programmable electric radiators.
From the dining area you step up into the well-equipped kitchen which includes a full range of appliances. On your arrival you will find our welcome basket which includes bread, butter, homemade preserves and biscuits and fresh eggs from our hens – and of course tea, coffee and sugar.
The double bedroom with the en-suite shower room is at the other end of the living room [no step here] with a child’s bed fitted in the alcove; it can always be used for suitcases or clothing if not required.
Guests find the tranquillity of the Old Dairy welcoming at the end of a busy day site-seeing, venturing into Cornwall or shopping! The village can offer other attractions too: If you are a handbell ringer, our local community group rings in St Mary’s church every Tuesday. If you are a Tower bell ringer, St Mary’s Roving Ringers ring every Wednesday; both groups welcome visitors. Are you a jigsaw enthusiast? St Mary’s Puzzlers meet every third Wednesday to puzzle and chat. We have several in the Dairy for you to make up, including two wooden ones.
Devon has so many attractions to offer, many you will already know about. There are three more we have enjoyed exploring:
Are you a steam railway fanatic? There are a wealth of disused railway lines to be explored and we can lend you the older OS maps which show the tracks. There are many heritage railways in Somerset, Devon and into Cornwall to travel on. The Dartmoor Line railway from Okehampton to Exeter was re-opened in 2022 and passes through many disused stations en route; well worth a trip.
Or are you a milestone enthusiast? Many are still marked on the modern OS maps and exciting to find.
Additional Safety features
Fire blanket in the kitchen
Safety lock to front door
Escape window in bedroom
Only four steps throughout the premises
Reminder: No smoking, vaping or candles or pets
Booking your holiday
