A Little Bit About Domme
DOMME – One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France
The fortified bastide village of Domme richly deserves this formal classification. Founded in 1250, it is set on top of a volcanic plug, towering over the river Dordogne and still has its ramparts and fortified portcullis gates. The narrow, cobbled streets and houses are as they were in days of old and the views over the surrounding countryside are stupendous (allowing easy detection of any marauding armies!). The village even has its own cave system.
Domme is in the “Golden Triangle” – an area of green hills, dramatic cliffs and gentle rivers providing great canoeing. There are amazing chateaux, prehistoric caves and, of course, wonderful food to be had in the many markets, the most famous of which is 10 minutes away in the famous medieval city of Sarlat. A couple of weeks here will be filled with exploration of history and pre-history, the delights of the rivers and possibly an hour or two relaxing in the sunshine by the pool in a villa rental!
