Description
Nestled within the peaceful grounds of Craighead Howf, the Muckle Howf is a beautifully restored Scottish steading offering a truly unforgettable self-catering experience. This characterful cottage sleeps six, with three spacious double bedrooms—each featuring its own private en-suite bathroom.Inside, you'll find a cosy sitting room complete with a library and a crackling wood-burning stove, as well as the inviting ‘Whisky Lounge’ upstairs—perfect for unwinding with a dram after a day of exploring. The large open-plan kitchen and dining area is fully equipped for everything from relaxed breakfasts to sociable evening meals, while a handy utility room provides a washing machine, dryer, freezer, second fridge and ironing facilities.
For a real treat, step into the dedicated sauna room, fitted with an infra-red sauna and invigorating shower. Then, head outdoors to your exclusive hot tub—ideal for soaking under the stars. The private garden also features a patio, firepit, and plenty of space to relax with views of the surrounding countryside.
While you’ll be surrounded by nature from the moment you arrive, you’re welcome to wander further through the woods, past the pond and into the main gardens where you’ll meet some of our friendly residents. From miniature donkeys and Soay or Ryeland sheep, to our cheeky pygmy goats—and of course, our Highland cows, who are always happy to pose for a photo in return for a slice of bread!
Although it’s tempting to stay put, the Muckle Howf is ideally located for exploring Perthshire and beyond. With excellent access to road and rail links, you’re never far from adventure. But if you’d rather take it slow, there’s more than enough to enjoy right here on the Craighead estate.
Please note: We’re unable to accommodate dogs at the Muckle Howf.

Leave ReviewBirthday stay in The Shire!
By daviethefifer on 20-May-2025This was a 50th birthday gift to us and boy it didn’t disappoint! I am a huge Hobbit fan and the opportunity to live in The Burrows for the weekend was just amazing. The quality of workmanship both inside and out is great, and the attention to detail for guests is fabulous. We loved the fact hobbit houses really do feel like you are in the shire as you’re down a gravel lane hidden away in the hillside. It was so peaceful having no kids with us, no tv and WiFi to distract us and just the animals as neighbours. Total bliss! Loved everything about the place, including the wee shop! Have already told family and friends all about it and would love to come back one day. Highly recommend!
