Description

2 doubles & 1 twin bedroom, 1 bathroom & 1 shower room, private 11m x 4m salt water pool (open June to September inclusive, heated depending on weather) Set on the peaceful outskirts of the pretty medieval town of Fontenay-le-Comte and overlooking the valley of the Vendee river, it is a pleasant 12 minute walk into town with its good choice of bars and restaurants for eating out. There are 2 hypermarkets within a few minutes drive, plus an Aldi and a Lidl and a 7 to 11 style supermarket. On Saturday there is the market. The covered market with its local food produce also opens on Wednesdays. The property is ideally situated to explore the sights of the area: 3 hours from St Malo (port) and 45 minutes to La Rochelle (airport). Local attractions include the Mervent forest for walking and cycling, the waterways of the Marais Poitevin, both 20 minutes. An hour away lie the sandy beaches at La Tranche. Further afield are Futurescope and Puy du Fou. The house accommodates 8 people with ease and comprises: • One twin-bedroom • Two double-bedrooms (one en-suite) • Two sofa-beds which convert to comfortable double beds, a fold-up bed and a cot available. On the ground floor there are 2 bedrooms, the shower room and a separate WC. The third bedroom with en-suite bathroom is on the first floor, with a small balcony with a lovely view over the valley, and on to the town. Duvets, pillows and bed linen are provided. Towels can be provided at extra cost. • A fully fitted kitchen with oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, ample crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. • A separate dining area with a large dining table to seat 8+. A high chair is available. • A main living area with TV with English Freeview and a DVD player. • A sitting room area with a fire place with wood-burner to provide additional heating off-season, although the house is electrically heated. There is a large basement under the house which has parking for two cars, as well as the washing machine and table-tennis table. Outside There is a small patio to the front of the property which overlooks the valley. To the rear of the house is a larger south-facing patio with the pool. There is a pergola to provide shade and patio furniture, sun loungers and a BBQ. The house is set in two thirds of an acre of garden, mainly laid to lawn. We have a strict no smoking rule in the house, and we are sorry, but pets are not allowed.

Best equipped holiday house we have found in France

By Angie Smith on 26-Apr-2025

This is our 4th visit in consecutive years to this lovely property. I can honestly say that during 25 years of twice yearly visits to France, this is the best equipped and best quality property that we have stayed in - which is why we have returned again and again. It is furnished and equipped to a very high standard and is like staying in somebody's home, rather than in a holiday rental. The owner's, Charles and Marina, have been very helpful with clear, full details and instructions beforehand and have always only been a text away if we have had any questions. The neighbours too have always been very kind and helpful. The location is ideal, very well situated for hypermarkets but in a quiet residential street near the outskirts of Fontenay and only a few minutes drive to main routes and a few minutes walk to an Aldi supermarket. The view over the town is beautiful especially during the amazing sunsets. Fontenay itself is a beautiful old town with lots of historic streets and buildings to explore, but also with excellent pizza places (Antoine) in Rue des drapiers near Les Halles, and restaurants and modern services and shops. It is ideally situated both to explore the Vendee itself and further south to La Rochelle and Poitou/ Charente. Our particular favourites, amongst others, were the NaturPark at Mervent, the historic town of Vouvant, The Haras at La Roche sur Yon, the historic abbeys and castles, the Asinerie du Baudet de Poitou (rare breed donkey centre about an hour south) and of course the wine tasting in the Fiefs Vendeen is good too. The medieval cities of Clisson and Parthenay are also worth visiting. There is so much to see and do in the area. I can thoroughly recommend this excellent property.
