Description

Situated off a quiet country road & approached via a private 1km long track, the property in set amongst acres of private land in the heart of the French countryside and
is surrounded by organic or Bio farmland. You are free to explore & enjoy the land & walk in the large expanse of woodland. Due to the organic status of the surrounding land & the lack of spraying of chemicals you will notice a healthy population of insects & butterflies which in turn attract a wide variety of interesting birdlife to watch. Whilst the situation here is rural, we are close to the market town of Civray 8kms away & the village of Charroux with its boulangeries, bars & pharmacy (5kms). The cities of Poitiers & Angouleme & the coast at La Rochelle are all accessible for a day out & there are many attractions closer by. We are also close (20km) to the racing circuit at Val de Vienne which runs a busy calendar of racing both car & bike throughout the year. We have plenty of parking here for trailers & transporters.

The main entrance to this newly refurbished & refurnished property is accessed by a short flight of steps to the large veranda looking out onto the extensive grounds & lakes. The veranda forms an ideal place to sit and relax & watch the wildlife, the birds & the sunset perhaps with a chilled glass of wine or a gin & tonic.

From the veranda, doors open into the hallway with a cloakroom to the right hand side & an adjoining toilet & washroom. The hallway continues with double doors giving access to the very spacious & beautifully furnished sitting room. This large light filled room has windows to three sides looking out over the land & the gites private garden. A large comfortable leather suite offers plenty of seating for TV viewing, you can watch UK satellite programs as well as French channels . A DVD player is provided with a selection of discs, in addition a music system with radio & cd & selection of cd's is available.

At the opposite end of this large room is the dinning area with a large table comfortably seating ten to twelve people , a good selection of quality crockery & glassware will be found in the dressers & cupboards . An archway leads through from the dining area to the well fitted kitchen. There is a large fridge freezer, a cooker with gas hob with extractor hood & electric oven. We also provide a microwave & dishwasher and a coffee maker which uses (pods). The kitchen sink looks out over the rear garden & a wildflower meadow with a small wood beyond, deer can often be seen in the meadow along with the occasional sanglier ! There is a large pantry / storage cupboard adjoining the kitchen, we have tried to provide the house with everything you might need whether making a snack or a fine dining evening meal. The rear door leads from the kitchen out onto a small area & steps down to the garden.

The two bedrooms on this floor are accessed from the main hallway through a door which separates them from the kitchen & living areas. To the left is a spacious twin bedded room with en- suite bath & shower room with windows looking onto the garden & pool area & to the right is an equally spacious double room with a king size bed & its own en-suite bathroom again with bath & shower.

An additional doorway from the hall opens onto a staircase leading down to a large area, on this level you will find a further bedroom with twin beds & en-suite shower & toilet, there is also a large games room with a table tennis table, a snooker table (not full size) & table football . There is also a wine fridge, Washing machine & sink.

From the kitchen a staircase leads up to the 1st floor, on this level you will find a large family room with King size bed & a single bed, this room has a bathroom next door with bath & shower.

The spacious private garden can be accessed from the kitchen via a short flight of steps or through a gate by the garage area. Here you will find a large dining table for al fresco dining, a clothes dryer, a nice selection of fresh herbs & the built in charcoal bbq area. The view looks out over our own woodland & a wildflower meadow. The pool area is accessed via a metal gate & offers sunbeds, parasols & a shaded area for when the sun gets too warm! We also have a few children's inflatable toys for the pool

A selection of bikes are provided in the garage & can be used at your own risk. We also provide some children's games in the house & further selection of outdoor games .

Our Stay In this Wonderful Gite

By Bill , Eileen and Jessie ( our Cocker Spaniel) on 12-Jun-2022

We had a wonderful time staying at Gite des Hirondelles , Richard and Elaine where great hosts, and pointed out all the local and not so local points of interest around the area. The high temperature's on our 1st week ( 40+ C) made the pool a must, Good sized pool, with plenty of space to lay out and sunbathe, You are surrounded by countryside, the drive to the Gite is a kilometre long passing lakes and cows on one side, and organic farm land on the other. Jessie was spoilt as the walks were quiet interesting for her with all the local wildlife, deer, rabbits and the biggest hares we have ever seen. Kites , Herons and Coypu with their families by the lakes. . Because of the organic nature of the surrounding farms, there are an abundance of insects , butterflies etc , but no Mosquitos , which was a real bonus. We have been all over the world , and this , by far was our best holiday, relaxing, wonderful local foods, and brilliant hosts. On the drive home to the UK , we have already discussed booking here again for next year.

Mature couple, relaxing holiday

By Sarah on 07-Sep-2020

This is a truly relaxing wonderful place to stay if wanting to experience the countryside of France and French living (with great facilities for the children. a games room, table tennis bikes etc). The hosts were unbelievably kind and helpful leaving a gift for our arrival which was absolutely delightful and they also had made sure everywhere was spotlessly clean and sanitised for COVID. Peace and quiet, beautiful views and not a person in sight ( although the owners live nearby if you have trouble with anything). The house has a well equipped kitchen and a large dining tables for meals. The house is also near to shops and 2 bakeries for breakfast ( 8 minute drive through the countryside ) to a village with all amenities and then a 10 minute drive away to a small French town with large superstores. Cafés & restaurants are in the inner part of the town square. Everything in the area is the real French experience of the Poitou Charente. Next to the house ( virtually opposite ) are 2 small lakes which are great if wanting to watch wildlife in action and and to see large fish. The pool is of a good size to have a proper swim and the surrounding patio has plenty of good sun beds for all the family. The pool was spotlessly clean although the liner might need repairing in one corner. We wished we had been able to stay for 2 weeks and not just the one. If you want the real French countryside experience then this is the place to come. S & J

Family with older children

By Michael on 26-Aug-2020

We stayed at this Gite in August 2020, hopefully this information can help you - Owners: Richard and Elaine were so helpful from start to finish. The communication was great and they went so far above what we expected by getting some shopping in for us before we arrived - I will say that they have fantastic taste in cheese, wine, beer etc!! All the way through the holiday they were the perfect hosts. Gite and Surrounding area: What a place! The Gite itself is fantastic and the pictures do not do it justice. The property is huge, clean, comfy and has everything you need for a stay. The pool was very welcome in the heat and the loungers were comfy and plenty. There's a great BBQ and seating area and fantastic porch to relax on too. The wider property has multiple fields full of flowers, pumpkins/gourds, lakes full of fish, woodland, birds, deer etc. It really is a fantastic place to step away from the city and soak up the countryside! (We also loved the daily visit from Alfie the dog looking for a fuss) Location: While you are secluded and in such a private area in the countryside, Civray is a 10 min drive with 3 good supermarkets, and Charroux is a similar distance with bakeries, bars and a fantastic abbey to visit. I would also recommend the 30 minute drive to Verteuil-sur-Charente for a walk around the small town and to try the best brioche in France at the mill! We had 8 adults staying together and we all had a wonderful time - do not hesitate to book!
