Description

Calderdale has featured in lots of tv series lately and if you enjoyed the rugged beauty of the landscape seen in 'Happy Valley' or 'Gentleman Jack', this is the place to visit. Dyer's Cottage is part of a 17th century farmhouse which was divided into 5 cottages to provide homes for master dyers in the dyeworks owned by the Wainhouse family in what is now a heritage area of Halifax. This historic building has been inhabited by my family for over 250 years and was lovingly restored during 2105 to an extremely high standard of comfort, yet keeping all the character features. It has 1 bedroom with a superking Hypnos bed (which can be 2 long singles) and is an ideal retreat for singles, a couple, 2 or 3 friends or a small family. It is suitable for an executive stay, a romantic break, a holiday exploring beautiful Calderdale, visiting friends/ family or escaping the builders. Unusual for a cottage, the rooms are spacious and the ceiling height is higher than normal so tall people are welcome! Efficient gas central heating and constant hot water will keep you warm. WiFi is available throughout the cottage and there is a desk on the landing if you are working from home.

The weekly price is very reasonable ranging from £450 to £550 but shorter stays of 2 or more nights may also be available so please look at the availability on our website www.dyerscottageyorkshire.co.uk where you will find all the details or do feel free to give us a call. We accept credit card payments at no surcharge but as we are UK based, this means you are protected under UK Consumer Protection legislation, unlike the big American booking online payments which direct you through USA or Ireland instead and charge you more. We accept bookings starting on any day of the week. We ask guests to bring their slippers and make themselves really at home! We supply a duvet as standard but on advance request we can provide 2 single duvets or sheets and a blanket instead. Your comfort is so important to us. We have a sofabed with a sprung mattress for an additional guest or to enable 2 people to sleep in different rooms.

The large sunny living room, like the bedroom above, has a beautiful view across the Calder Valley towards Norland. It has an old inglenook fireplace with a gas powered woodburner to provide instant heat, a beamed ceiling and restored doors with traditional door furniture. The seating is comfortable, including a sofa bed for an extra guest, enabling you to enjoy an evening in watching the 50 inch Smart TV with freeview or a DVD. There is a radio and free wifi for your convenience. The wall decorations are carefully chosen to reflect the history of the cottage and area. The modern, fully equipped Shaker style. kitchen, with electric oven and ceramic hob, has oak worktops, a slimline dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave. The rear door opens into a small courtyard area with flower pots and a washing line. Exposed stone, a mullioned window dating from 1650 and a modern rooflight ensure this room has character too. Stairs between the 2 downstairs rooms lead to a spacious landing with a window and a desk. Do be careful as the top step is higher than the others but this is just part of the character of living in an old cottage. There is room here for a travel cot we can provide with notice as well as a highchair, baby bath seat, changing mat and more. However it is not possible to fit a stair gate.

This has a super king size 6ft Hypnos bed which can also be configured as 2 single beds by prior arrangement. High quality Egyptian cotton plain bed linen and towels are provided for your comfort. A Victorian cast iron decorative fireplace and restored wooden doors to the wardrobe add to the luxury feel of the room. The very modern bathroom is equipped with a large shower/bath at one end of which is a powerful Aqualisa rainshower. The modern chrome fittings also include a handheld shower. Pale grey porcelain tiles decorate the walls and floor. The basin is enclosed in a drawer unit and the gas central heating boiler and washer/dryer are also enclosed in matching glossy white units.

The secluded, enclosed, sunny garden is a lovely feature of this property and seating is provided on the Yorkshire stone patio for you to enjoy the view.
Calderdale has been made famous recently by being the film location for the BBC drama tv series 'Happy Valley', 'Gentleman Jack', 'Last Tango in Halifax' and coming shortly is a new BBC drama 'The Gallows Pole' based on the story of the local 'coiners'. The beautiful moorland scenery of the Pennines is less than 10 minutes drive from the cottage and Haworth, the home of the famous Bronte sisters is just 30 minutes away. The Calder and Hebble Navigation and the Rochdale Canals are within walking distance of the cottage or hire a barge from Sowerby Bridge marina and take a trip to quirky Hebden Bridge. Public transport is excellent with buses close by, with one actually passing the gate, and railway stations at both Halifax 2 miles and Sowerby Bridge 1 mile. Both towns have an excellent range of shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy Yorkshire hospitality but there are more local ones too. The Wainhouse Tavern is a neighbour and is well known by ale trailers for its cask ales. CAMRA has given it an award too. It also offers delicious home cooked food. Local shops, a large supermarket, restaurants and takeaways are within a 10/ 15 minute walk but this is an area known for its hills!
Leeds, York and Manchester are excellent day trip destinations or you may choose to explore the local markets of towns such as Halifax, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. The Yorkshire Dales NP and the Peak District NP are only an hours drive away and the coastal towns of Blackpool, Southport and Lytham St Anne's just a little more.

Helpful Notes
Free on street unrestricted car parking is available within 50m.
No smoking inside the property. We can also provide a travel cot and high chair on request. Please note that it is not possible to fit a stair gate at the top of the stairs. We also provide a sofabed in the living room which means 2 guests can have a room each. Maximum cottage capacity is 3 adults and a baby.
It is expected that the cottage will be left clean and tidy on departure although a final clean is included in the rental cost so that our high standards are maintained for the next visitor.
Accessibility issues because of steps from the road and steep steps inside the cottage mean that unfortunately the cottage is not suitable for the less mobile.

Lovely historic cottage which has been prepared with love, care and attention. Excellent location with canal walks to Sowerby Bridge or Hebden Bridge for the more energetic. Also got to enjoy a concert at the beautiful Piece Hall. Highly recommended.
