Helperby is a quaint village close to Thirsk which nestles within the heart of North Yorkshire. Here you will find cobbled streets, a fine market square and historic inns which date from when Thirsk was an important posting station. Thirsk has a racecourse where you can have a flutter on the horses or visit the James Herriot museum, voted one of the best 10 visitor attractions in the world and houses the original surgery of Alf Wight, Thirsk is the fictional 'Darrowby'. Choose from a great selection of restaurants and cafes serving hearty home-made local Yorkshire fayre or grab some fish and chips and sit around the clock tower in the sunlight to enjoy this delicacy.

The area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, there are many pathways and cycle tracks close by suitable for everyone. The Old Post Office is an excellent starting point for exploring the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales which are within easy reach.

York, with its imposing minster and medieval walls, is just 30 mins away and great for a lively night out, a spot of retail therapy or a day of culture. Harrogate is only 45 minutes away, you must visit the famous Betty's Tea Rooms with its ingenious British/Austrian fusion of flavours, not for calorie counting.

Lake Gormire hides on the side of Sutton Bank in thick woodland and is one of only two natural lakes in Yorkshire, you can wild swim here. Abbeys such as Rievaulx, Fountains and Byland give a nod to the vast amount of history in the area, the most Iconic being Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. Why not take a trip to the seaside and dip your toes in the sea and feel the sand beneath your feet, the east coast has many old fishing villages such as Robin Hood's Bay with its dark history of smuggling or Whitby with its heritage of fishing and the home of Captain Cook.

A nice place in a great village

By Keith Nixon on 17-Oct-2025

We booked this place pretty last minute for a shirt break with our dog and very glad we did. The house was incredibly clean and pretty well equipped (we didn't use the hot tub) in a really good location. The village itself is lovely with super friendly people and a great pub within walking distance. The beds were comfortable and the house warm. There was a welcome kit, including prosecco, and an open fire if you want (although the house is easily warm enough).

A fantastic place in a lovely area. The host, Thomas, could have been more helpful always responding quickly to queries and giving very helpful tips and advice. The property is large and extremely well appointed. The kitchen is very well equipped and the whole house is beautifully presented. Great location with Ripon and York within easy striking travelling distance. Great hot tub. I highly recommend this property and its great host.
