Overview
Description
The Shippen at Coombe Mill is a one-bedroom detached property for two people that is close to the River Carey and surrounded by a private nature reserve of 34 acres. It is the perfect retreat for those who enjoy wildlife and peace and quiet. There are beavers, otters, kingfishers, dippers, owls, deer, foxes, badgers and bats as well as butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. The Shippen is situated some distance from the main house and has its own parking and entrance. The property has a small secluded garden with table and chairs. It has been judged as "exceptional" by 120 visitors on the Vrbo website - all verified reviews. .The Shippen is situated six miles from Launceston, once the ancient capital of Cornwall, and only four miles from the A30. Its central position close to the Devon/Cornwall border means most places in either county are less than an hour's drive away including Dartmoor National Park, Bodmin Moor, the Tamar Valley and the spectacular north coast of Cornwall.
Regrettably the property is unsuitable for children and - because of the wildlife here - including vulnerable species such as beaver kits, otter cubs and deer fawns - we do not allow pets.

Another wonderful week
By Jean and Andy on 21-Feb-2026We had a lovely time on our 2nd visit to the Shippen (we will be back!). It's such a privilege to be able to wander round the varied habitats of the 34 acre reserve and to see the wonderful variety of wildlife, flowers and trees that can be found there. Having visited previously in the Summer it was great to see the reserve at a different time of the year when the birds are just starting to nest and the primroses were putting on a good display, soon to be followed by the Wild Garlic and Bluebells in the woodland. The river is always a draw to see what wildlife is making use of it and the large pond is a lovely place just to sit and observe - there are several seats thoughtfully placed around the reserve to sit peacefully and observe the wildlife. Jon and Janice are kind and thoughtful hosts, welcoming you with a lovely cream tea and fresh flowers, and nearby if you have any queries or want to know the best place to spot anything specific.
A truly magical discovery
