Description

Situated in the small hamlet of Le Haut Fresnay, some 8 miles from DOMFRONT in southern Normandy, La Fermette is a stone-built, former farmhouse standing in extensive grounds, shared with helpful British owners. There are ponds and a stream, lawns and mature trees, and wildlife everywhere. You can see red squirrels, and birds of prey, and if you are lucky: hares, deer and even (rarely) wild boar! The peace and quiet is almost tangible. Our local village, Lore, with its small supermarket, is within walking distance. Ceauce, a small market town with a range of shops, a bank and a small weekly market, is a couple of miles away, and just to the north is Domfront, a mediaeval market town with a fine church and a castle. Also nearby you will find Lassay les Chateaux, with its picturesque castle, lake and rose garden. Bagnoles de l'Orne, about 15 miles away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and smart shops. There is plenty to do in the local area, and information is provided in the cottage. Further afield, Mont St Michel, the D-Day landing beaches and some sandy seaside beaches are all easily accessible. Le Mans and some of the northernmost Loire Chateaux are within reach. Even Paris and Monet's garden at Giverny, are manageable in a (longish) day trip.

La Fermette is available for a maximum of 6 people (plus a baby). With 3 bedrooms and 2 shower rooms, the cottage is an ideal holiday property for 2 couples, or a family holiday. The ground floor consists of a large open plan area comprising the living room, dining area and kitchen. The cottage has electric central heating and there is also a wood burning stove.

In the living room, there is a sofa, comfortable chairs and coffee tables. The room is well lit by overhead lights, a standard lamp and table lamps, The large woodburning stove is set into a feature fireplace. The beamed ceiling completes the rustic charm of the room. A flat screen TV offers British satellite television and radio channels. A DVD player, board games and a collection of books complete the indoor entertainment.
The dining area has a table and six chairs with an overhead lamp. The huge oak sideboard has a carved door.
The rear window overlooks a patio and a meadow beyond.
The front window overlooks a small front garden, fenced and gated, to provide safety for small children.

The kitchen, with oak units, has an electric oven with ceramic hob, a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, electric kettle and a 2-door fridge/freezer. It is well provided with cooking equipment. and there is plenty of matching crockery, cutlery and glassware.

Off the back hall, which also gives access to the garden and the stairs, is a shower room with hand basin and a separate wc.

Upstairs, off the spacious landing with its’ stair gate, there are three prettily furnished bedrooms, two with double beds and one with twin beds. All the bedrooms have wardrobes, mirrors, chests of drawers and/or dressing tables. Each bed has a bedside table with a reading lamp. All the rooms have electric heaters which can be controlled centrally if you wish.

The house bathroom is also off the landing and is accessible from all three bedrooms. It has a shower, hand basin and WC.
.A cot is available on request. All linen and towels are included in the rent, with the exception of cot linen.

Outside, at the front of the house is a small fenced and gated courtyard garden, safe for small children. A garden table and chairs make it a delightful place to have breakfast on a sunny morning. At the back of the house is a patio with garden furniture and a barbecue. This is your private place to eat outside, or just to sit with a glass of wine, enjoying the birdsong and any passing wildlife. The rest of the grounds are yours to enjoy as well, and there are several places to sit and relax. Or take your own garden chairs and sit where you wish. There is a picnic table too, in the valley, close to the "bug hotel" - another place for a meal outdoors perhaps, after a stroll through the valley and around the wildflower meadow .

Our posted prices for La Fermette are for the cottage per week for up to 4 people using 2 bedrooms. There is a supplement of £60 per person per week for additional people up to the house capacity of 6, or £60 for the use of the 3rd bedroom.

Stayed in Le Fournil July 2019

By Nicola L on 15-Aug-2019

As soon as we arrived we knew we had chosen we’ll, Nigel & Paula welcomed us and introduced us to our beautiful cottage. It was gorgeous, had everything we needed and in the heat was lovely and cool. We spent the hot days just chilling in the most fantastic gardens watching a huge variety of birds, butterflies, and the odd coypu. The surrounding area is full of so many historical castles, churches and delightful very reasonably priced restaurants. We couldn’t have asked for better hosts, a better cottage or a better area . We will definitely return to explore further and eat more!!

Our stay in Le Fournil - August 2021

By Carolin B on 21-Aug-2021

My husband, son and I had a wonderful stay at Paula and Nigel''s. Ours was the Le Fournil cottage (there is a second cottage nearby, but everyone has their privacy; and a third which is tucked away further up the road, plus the main house). The cottage itself was simple but contained everything we needed, was squeaky clean and pleasant. The grounds outside are absolutely stunning, with loads of space to run around for children. The area is very tranquil, with nearby villages to explore, farms selling local produce and especially apple juice, cider and calvados, the specialties of this region, and an interesting horse show taking place in a local farm (check out La Michaudiere). The hosts Paula and Nigel went above and beyond, always helpful with advice and things to do; they live in the main house but make themselves effortlessly available when needed or otherwise leave their guests to it. Our toddler is absolutely fascinated with tractors, and Nigel was kind enough to let him ride with him on his mini tractor around the property. It was an incredibly nice thing to do and my son was ecstatic and still mentions his memorable ride to this day! I wholeheartedly recommend Le Fournil!
