Description
North Lodge, Ford, Lochgilphead, Argyll, Scotland, PA31 8RJNorth Lodge is our lovingly restored riverside cottage in the West Highland village of Ford which lies at the southern end of Loch Awe about 3 miles east of Kilmartin off the Lochgilphead to Oban road.
The Location
The cottage, formerly the lodge at the entrance to the Ederline Estate, is ideally situated for holidaymakers to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including walking, riding, boating or fishing. The area is rich in history with many castles to explore and the early Celtic remains which are all around with the spectacular burial sites around Kilmartin which now has a fine visitor and Interpretive Centre. Cross the ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ to Seil Island and go on to explore Easdale Island with its small museum. Oban is within easy reach with the opportunity for day trips to the inner Isles of Mull and Iona. The villages of Tarbert, Tayvallich and Crinan are a short ride away and offer some spectacular views, fine eating places and a virtually unlimited choice of things to do. Ferries to Islay, Ghia and Arran are within easy reach. From Ardfern, about 15 mins drive away, it is usually possible to take a boat trip around Loch Craignish to see the seals and bird life or take a little longer trip across the and offer some spectacular views, fine eating places and a virtually unlimited choice of things to do. Ferries to Mull, Islay, Ghia and Arran are within easy reach.
You might catch sight of one of a number of golden eagles or sea eagles which nest in the are. In our garden we have see red squirrels, pine martins and a wide variety of bird life. Osprey breed in the area and at nesting time may often be seen over the Loch. Red deer too are a common sight.
The nearest supermarket shopping is at Lochgilphead (14 miles) but there is a village shop in Ardfern about 8 miles away.
The petrol filling station just out of Lochgilphead is also very useful and sells many provisions.
The Kilmartin Hotel, which is about 10 minutes drive, serves food as does the visitor centre for the museum in Kilmartin. The Loch Melfort Hotel at Aduaine, the Tayvallich Inn, the Galley of Lorne at Ardfern, and the Crinan Hotell all offer excellent food at reasonable prices.
Some fishing on Loch Awe is free. Fishing from our own river bank is also permissible.
Car parking space is at the side of the cottage. There is a covered wood store and lockable shed where it is possible to keep bicycles and where we keep garden chairs, barbecue etc. A reasonable amount of logs may be used by guests. The garden has picnic table and benches overlooking the stream and a summer house with decking up the hill which makes a good vantage point.
Restored to a high standard for comfort but retaining many old features such as exposed beam ceilings, pine panelling and stonework the accommodation consists of
Sitting Room, with wood burning stove, armchairs, sofa, dining table, TV (sky satellite, Video and CD player. Three steps down lead to the breakfast kitchen.
The Breakfast Kitchen is fully equipped with built-in electric cooker, extractor hood, microwave, fridge, freezer, washing machine and dishwasher all set in custom built pine units. The sink unit is fitted with brass mixer taps over a Belfast sink with waxed sycamore draining board. Pine larder cupboard and dresser provide ample food storage facilities. All china, glasses, cutlery, food mixer, toaster, ironing board with iron, cleaning materials and Dyson are provided . There is a drop leaf pine table and kitchen chairs.
The Bathroom has bath and Mira Sport electric shower, heated towel rail and mounted fan heater and extractor fan.
The double bedroom has a double bed, with bedside tables and lights, a chest of drawers, wardrobe, and chairs all in pine.
Safety
The property is not suitable for young children because the garden is not fenced and runs straight on to the river, which can be very fast flowing sometimes.
The body of the wood burning stove gets very hot when lit and guests must read the manufacturer’s instructions before lighting a fire.
A fire extinguisher is provided at both front and back doors and a fire blanket is situated in the kitchen.
.
Please note the loft rooms upstairs, reached via a fixed alternator loft ladder, are not included in the letting but may be used to access the tumble dye , see the safety notice.
Heating
The cottage has ‘economy 10’ electric heating’ which allows off peak electricity only for the storage heaters in the kitchen and sitting room and for the water immersion heater. In addition the convector heaters forming part of the large storage heaters, the bedroom 1/ 2KW wall mounted heater and hall storge heater operate any time with the cheap rate prices applying at the cheap rate periods, operating may be controlled manually, by thermostat or by time clock according to individual preference. . A manual boost to the water heater is possible at any time of day. The cottage is fully insulated and we are usually too warm rather than cold (even in the depths of winter).
The wood-burning stove adds to the ambience (and heat…)
The arrangement is that all meters are read on entry and departure and a cheque left in the envelope provided or payment by credit transfer.
Telephone
A telephone is installed for incoming calls only. Mobile phone reception is patchy and there is no signal in the cottage but smart phones can use the facility to make a wi fi connection through the cottage internet to gain full phone use at no extra cost o take calls in the cottage.
