Overview
Description
27th August for 7-10 days reduced heavily. This traditional Charentaise property is located in a small ‘lieu-dit’ or hamlet with a windmill just outside Brie sous Mortagne in the Charente Maritime. It has been recently renovated to a high standard retaining many of the beams and much of the original stonework including, for example, a large stone animal trough converted to a worktop in the kitchen. There are high ceilings, plenty of open plan space and large windows that make the most of the panoramic views of the Gironde estuary.
The house is 5 minutes drive from Mortagne sur Gironde, a port with a good selection of restaurants, and Port Maubert, also 5 minutes, which is very quiet but features a pop up restaurant and a first class sailing school with kayaks and paddleboards for hire. Further up the Gironde estuary are five beaches at Meschers sur Gironde (15-20 minutes drive) and then 30-40 minutes away are the acres of Atlantic beaches and forests ideal for walkers or cyclists.
The property sleeps 10-12 people in 5 bedrooms plus 2 cots and high chairs if required. There are 2 master bedrooms with stunning estuary views and freestanding baths. There are 2 comfortable lounge areas in which to relax, both with large screen TVs. There is air conditioning in the Kitchen/Diner, the main Lounge and two bedrooms. Fans are provided for other bedrooms. At the rear of the property there is a large barn which is equipped with table tennis and pool table.
Outside the garden extends to one acre and features a large south facing patio and 10x4m heated swimming pool with stunning views of estuary again. The pool has an integrated, roller cover that will take the weight of a child up to the age of 12 and meets the very robust regulatory requirements for Health and Safety around pools in France. Just off the rear pool terrace, there is an additional covered and well shaded terrace for outdoor seating, an kitchen and dining area
Changeover day normally Wednesday in Summer school holidays. There is an outdoor kitchen and tables and chairs to dine outside with a convenient door to an outside shower and loo ideal for the end of the day. Around the pool there are numerous sun beds and further chairs.
At the front of the house there is a large gravel drive with ample parking for 3-4 cars.
There is good WIFI with commercial quality extenders that enable reach through the thick stone walls, it will also reach to the pool and covered terraces!

Leave ReviewEverybody Loved it.
By Steve Lansdown on 13-Aug-20252 Puit Morteau is a wonderful gite in an unspoiled part of France. Neither I nor any member of our party has a criticism of any aspect of our stay. Gary White, the owner, was a pleasure to deal with. His house is breathtaking, and extremely well appointed: he's thought of everything. I was especially pleased with the whisper-quiet air-con in our bedroom which ensured we slept well in the ginormous bed! Small village with boulangerie and cafe/bar/shop a 15-minute walk away, but to our extreme disappointment it closed for summer holidays only days into our stay. I've never seen children have so much fun, for so long, in a swimming pool: we couldn't get them out!
A wonderful family stay
By JH on 30-Jul-2025An outstanding property and Gary was a pleasure throughout. I would say it’s difficult to capture with a camera how good this place actually is, especially with the exact location and the views with a lovely cooling breeze rolling up the hill. We had a family holiday for a week at the start of Aug and loved everything about the property. Our kids 10 and 8 loved the pool, the games room and the outdoor areas immediately around the property, there’s even space for a game of rounders and badminton. The kitchen/dining area was a pleasant area to congregate and the views are amazing. The local vines are a treat and you can walk to the local bakery which has lots of tasty treats! The property occupies a great location for day trips, we went to: Plage Des Vergnes which we really enjoyed (particularly in the evening). Port of Mortagne-sur-Gironde for a potter. Talmont-sur-Gironde to site see, shop and lunch. We drove to Bordeaux / Bordeaux wine museum which was surprisingly good. We also drove to Saint-Emilio which is beautiful, the wine tasting was great too. I could write more… 5 stars - a brilliant family holiday.
Family Holiday
By Nick M on 11-Jul-2025Just back from a fabulous family holiday for 7 adults, 4 children and 2 babies ages from 7 weeks to 65 years. House has several large communal areas for the whole family to gather but is also large enough for people to find some space. Very comfortable, lovely pool and pool area. The area is beautiful and clean and the locals are very friendly. Gary was very helpful and communicative throughout. Would thoroughly recommend and we'll be going back some day.
2 Puit Marteau
By Zoe on 31-Jul-2024We have just finished a week’s stay at 2 Puits Marteau. We are a family of 5, with three older children (16,13 and 10) who enjoy their own space, and this property is enormous! So no fighting between the kids, which made for a happy holiday. There is air conditioning and amazing views over the estuary which is not really appreciated from the description on the website. Indeed, I have fed back to the owner that the pictures here do not do the property justice. The bedrooms are huge, and two are fitted with air conditioning, which was very useful in the heat. Downstairs also has air conditioning, which again was very useful. The pool is heated to a lovely temperature, and we all made good use of it. There is a lovely bakery less than 5 mins drive away, and Mortange and Gemozac are close by for some more shops. The owner was very responsive and dealt with a minor query quickly. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
