The Norman Helmsley Castle dates back over 900 years. It has evolved over the centuries from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. The castle is open to visitors all year round, under the care of English Heritage.
Helmsley has everything you’d expect in a quintessentially English market town; a vibrant market square, independent specialist shops, unique places to eat and drink and an imposing castle. It also has a walled garden, a bird of prey centre, a microbrewery, an open-air swimming pool, a luxury spa, a nature reserve, galleries and an arts centre.
From Helmsley, you can explore both The Howardian Hills and the neighbouring North York Moors National Park, stretching across the Whitby and the coast. Varied walking routes are on offer for seasoned ramblers and those looking for a more sedate meander alike.
