La Madeleine is a recently renovated property which has been lovingly restored into luxurious holiday accommodation with attention to detail and respecting local traditions, crafts and materials. The restoration combines simplicity and luxury to create colourful and cosy accommodation in a Provencal farmhouse style.

The property is situated on the edge of the small village of Oppedette north-east of Apt and enjoys stunning views of the surrounding Luberon hills.

The nearby river has carved an impressive series of gorges next to the village, with the main canyon about 2.5km long and up to 150m deep. Along a pleasant path from the village there is a viewing point that gives an impressive introduction to their scenic grandeur. The gorges offer some fantastic walking with waymarked routes including a path that follows along both sides of the gorges or for the more adventurous a descent into the gorge.

La Madeleine is perfectly located for exploring this magical part of the south of France with some of the finest perched villages in Provence including Gordes, Menerbes, Lacoste and Bonnieux within 40km. There are also many other fascinating villages and towns to discover, many with weekly markets, within a very short drive including Reillanne and Cereste.

The Luberon Natural Park has much to offer including farmers markets, truffle markets, stunning perched villages, restaurants, wine tours, hot air balloon, hiking, bike tours, antic markets, lavender fields and music festivals.

For organic wine lovers, there is an unmissable estate organic vines just 3km away with a selection of over ten organic wines and a truly impressive architecturally designed winery and restaurant. It is possible to take a tour of the vineyard, dine at the on-site restaurant and even order cooked meals from the restaurant to be savoured at the property. Fruit and vegetable products from the owner’s farm can also be delivered daily at the house on request.

The property sleeps eight people in one double bedroom and three twin bedrooms, but an additional two people can also sleep in a double sofa bed. Please contact us for details.

ACCOMMODATION
Living area:
Living room in predominantly white decor with splashes of Provencal colours with comfortable sofa, armchairs, open fireplace, TV, DVD player and dining area.

Two steps up from the living room. Fully equipped kitchen with oven, ceramic hobs, two fridges, freezer, dishwasher, kettle and coffee machine. Laundry room with washing machine and dryer.

BEDROOMS:
First floor:
Bedroom 1: Master bedroom with King size bed (200cm), TV and en suite bathroom with wc.
Bedroom 2: Bedroom with twin beds, TV and door to furnished terrace with pool and countryside views.

Second floor:
Bedroom 3: Bedroom with twin beds and TV.
Separate adjoining annex 25m away from the main house and accessible from the outside only.
Bedroom 4: Bedroom with twin beds, TV and en-suite shower room with shower and wc. Living area with double sofa bed (160cm).

PRIVATE OUTDOOR, HEATED POOL:
Private pool: 10m x 3.6m. Depth: 1.3m throughout. Open from mid-May to end of September. Security system: cover. Steps down into pool.

Changeover day: Saturday from May to September. Outside these months non-Saturday arrivals/departures may be considered. Please ask for details.

Small supermarket and bakery in Viens 6km. Shops including bakeries and cash points in Vacheres 8km, Simaine la Rotonde 9km and Céreste 13km. Good selection of shops, bars and restaurants as well as huge weekly market in Apt 25km.

NEARBY PLACES OF INTEREST:
Oppedette: There are lots of marked trails through the gorges and you can either walk along the rim or next to the river in the valley. However, care should be taken as the paths are on the very edge of the cliffs and are not advisable for children or anyone with vertigo and should not be attempted in wet weather.

Les Davids (3km): Nearby organic vineyard and farm run by the owners La Madeleine with farm shop offering a selection of wines, fruit, vegetables and local produce. Deliveries to the property also available.

Viens (6km): The nearest Medieval perched village with regular Wednesday morning market and festival in August.

Simiane la Rotonde (9km): Hilltop village with Medieval castle and international Baroque music festival in summer.

Reillane (16km)
A fascinating and authentic Provencal village famous for its incredible festival in June. Wander through the historic old village or visit the Sunday morning market.

Banon (15km): Buy some of the famous and tasty Banon goat cheese at either market (every Tuesday and Saturday morning) and visit Le Bleuet, a fascinating book shop spread over four floors in the heart of the village.

The Colorado Provencal (12km): Situated between the villages of Rustrel and Gignac waymarked walks take you through a unique and colourful desert scenery with yellow and red rock formations created when ochre was quarried in the area.

Avignon (79km): Avignon, on the banks of the Rhone, is probably best-known these days for the children’s song – Sur le Pont d’Avignon. But for several decades in the 14th century it was the capital of Christendom, after Pope Clement V moved his court here to avoid the chaos in Rome. The legacy of that papal schism can be seen today in the city’s UNESCO-protected architecture, including the vast Palais des Papes. And nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape, site of a now-ruined castle built by a later pope, still produces acclaimed red wines. The city’s intact ramparts and pedestrianised centre lend Avignon a small-town, medieval feel. Yet each July, the city goes totally 21st century, as thousands of visitors descend for a contemporary performing arts extravaganza, the Festival d’Avignon.

Aix en Provence (93km): Lively and very appealing town with numerous restaurants and bars near the famous tree-lined Cours Mirabeau, markets on most week-days where you can sample regional produce including Calissons d’Aix (delicious marzipan-based confectionery). There are lots of wonderful art galleries all within walking distance from one another in the centre of Aix, shops, music and much more!

L’Isle sur la Sorgue (56km): Pretty market town, much loved for its antique shops and twice weekly markets. Once an important fishing town, with an abundance of crayfish in the River Sorgue, there are also several canals running through the centre. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, the town has been called the Venice of Provence. The river has influenced the development of the town, providing for thriving crafts and industries, flour mills, wool and silk workshops. Many of the waterwheels remain adding to the picturesque charm of the town. Each Sunday there is quite a carnival atmosphere with a flea market, regarded as of the best antique markets in France (Thursday is normal market day).
