Overview
Description
We look forward to welcoming you to 'Les Hirondelles', our privately owned gite/holiday home. Our stunningly converted detached barn offers 5 beautiful bedrooms, two of which are en-suite and situated in what must be one of the most stunning locations in the Charente with far reaching views over the countryside from every room and the stunning open sided covered patio. There are beautiful walks from the doorstep, a large garden leading off into the countryside, plenty of parking and private pool.We are situated in the south east Charente region of France very close to the border of the Dordogne and are surrounded by rolling hills and woodland, maize and sunflower fields but only 2km from the pretty town of Montmoreau St Cybard, with all amenities including butchers, bakers, bank, post office, bar and a little restaurant and a large supermarket. The stunning town of Aubeterre sur Dronne is only 15 minutes away with its unusual Romanesque monolithic underground church and voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has a variety of great restaurants, a wonderful river to swim in or you can sit with a chilled glass of wine or cold beer in the square watching the world go by.
The area has a wealth of charm and tranquility, from the South Charente with its echoes (but fewer tourists) of the next door Dordogne to the gently sloping vineyards of the wealthy Cognac producing West Charente. Spend your time visiting the many wonderful local markets including Aubeterre, Brantome, Riberac, Chalais and Villebois Lavalette with its feudal chateau dominating the region from its hilltop. Villebois has a market every Saturday morning where you can enjoy a dish of fresh oysters with a bottle of Muscadet under the ancient and covered market square. The attractive hill town of Angouleme is 30 minutes away, best know for its stunning Romanesque cathedral, international comic festival and the Cirque de Ramparts held each year. Spend a day tasting the wonders of the great houses of Cognac and learn about the history and production of this glorious amber nectar. The stunning town of Brantome is just under an hour away where you can wander the cobbled streets, take a canoe around the island town or sit in the park with its huge trees and stunning plant life. These are but a few tasters of what our area has to offer, and if it all proves too much, take time out to relax by the pool with a good book and a chilled glass of wine taking in the breathtaking views around you, not to mention the utter peace and tranquility this gite offers.
For more information for what to do in the area please check out our 'Activities' and 'Activities for Children' pages.
Les Hirondelles is a large and beautifully renovated barn, which includes all modern facilities, yet still retains the character features of huge oak beams, Charentais stone walls and is set on a hillside with the most stunning views. It has its own large garden, with established fruit trees and has a fantastic open sided covered hanger as a patio, meaning you can sit out in the fresh air come rain or shine looking out far across the sunflower fields, woodlands and hills. The 10 x 5 m pool is totally private to the property and surrounded by a beautiful decking patio with sun beds and again those views!

By Sarah Peacock on 30-Aug-2025Les Hirondelles is such a gorgeous gite. There is plenty of room and the swimming pool is private with amazing views over the valley. It really is a peaceful place to stay and great for families. It’s well located to visit lots of places including the beautiful village of Aubeterre sur Dronne. Lesley and Toby are great hosts who are on hand if you have any questions. We’ll definitely be back.

Fantastic setting
By Mark on 16-Aug-2025We'd booked a family holiday at the wonderful Les Hirondelles. The description of the property was very accurate and was ideal for a family or larger group. The setting is wonderful with great views over the countryside. Flexible accommodation proved ideal for three generations of family and Lesley and Toby couldn't have been more helpful. Very good communication before, during and after our stay. The pool was a big hit and although perhaps not 100% child friendly in it's access and construction it was a small detail which ultimately didn't impact on our enjoyment. I'd thoroughly recommend Les Hirondelles to any family or group looking for large, flexible, well equipped accommodation in a perfect setting.

By Katie on 21-Jun-2025What a wonderful holiday we’ve had at Les Hirondelles. The hosts made so welcome. The property was amazing.; spotless, beautifully decorated with every home comfort, plus great pool and outdoor eating area . The views across the valley were stunning. So many lovely, interesting towns and places to visit in the area and other days just chilling in our spacious, private gite . Sunrises and sunsets looking from our decking , a glass of wine in hand , watching wildlife roaming the valley was the icing on the cake. A very special place . Thank you 🙏

Long Awaited Wonderful Holiday
By Alison Walker on 06-Jun-2025We stayed at Les Hirondelles (a long awaited trip of family members to celebrate significant birthday's and wedding anniversary). The setting was absolutely stunning surrounded by open countryside, plenty of wildlife including deer, owls, bats and multitudes of birds including birds of prey. Weather was perfect, lots of beautiful places to visit great restaurant in village, supermarket 10 minutes drive as will as fresh bread from local bakery. Highly recommended for families or in our case three sisters and husbands of varying ages and interest something for every one. Great hosts Lesley and Toby who were extremely helpful.

Amazing!!
By Karin Sehmer on 26-Jul-2024Our stay in Les Hirondelles was superb. We were a party of 11 and there was more than enough room for us all. The owners were really helpful both before and during our stay. There was a large, much appreciated swimming pool, a dishwasher better than mine at home, a washing machine and a large and modern fridge We had all our meals outside on a shady patio and we used the barbecue a couple of times. The owners had left us a simple, but much appreciated food parcel for our arrival. Food shopping was easy in the nearby village with a large and comprehensive supermarket. Further afield, there was a beach by a river for the children with sand, good for simple digging but too dry for sand castles, There was also a children's playground at the river, toilet facilities and ice creams

Looking over valley location superb; great for families and groups
By Will on 08-Jun-2024We loved our stay in June 2024. Travelled with another family and two couples - the house is full of charm and character and swallowed us up aplomb. The location was gorgeous, surrounded as it is with verdant French countryside. Great towns to visit nearby. Owners could not be faulted. Such fun!
