Description

Newly acquired and currently receiving some TLC, Maison Lavie is the final property on our estate to become part of Domaine Lavie. This traditional home is available to welcome you from the end of June 2026 for a relaxing holiday where you can rest, recharge and enjoy soaking up the Basco-Béarnaise culture in the sunshine.

OVERVIEW

Sleeping 8 in 4 bedrooms, Maison Lavie offers a large, well-equipped kitchen and a spacious living and dining area that is perfect for relaxing or sharing home-cooked meals with family and friends. Upstairs, the four comfortable bedrooms, all with ceiling fans, ensure a cool and restful night’s sleep. There are 2 ensuite bathrooms, a family bathroom and a cloakroom downstairs.

Outside, you can enjoy use of your own 12m x 4m salt water swimming pool, the garden and sweeping views of the countryside from the spacious terrace. In short, Maison Lavie promises a tranquil retreat where it is easy to relax and unwind from the stresses and strains of everyday life. However, if relaxing is not for you, the abundance of things to see and do close by can keep you as busy and as active as you wish. And if you need to keep in touch, there's free super-fast, fibre internet connection.

LOCATION

The medieval spa town of Salies de Béarn is less than 5 minutes drive away, offering several bakeries (everyone has their favourite!), an excellent range of restaurants, bars and cafés and a variety of interesting shops, a supermarket and, of course, a lively weekly market. Why not join the locals on their weekly shop and pick up some regional delicacies such as Foie Gras, Brebis cheese or Bayonne ham?

The Museum of Salt and Béarnais Traditions is also worth a visit to learn more about the history of the town and it's salt springs that produce the "white gold" that Salies is famous for. You could also pamper yourself with a treatment to the Selya Resort and Spa to experience the benefits of the salt and mineral rich waters.

This picturesque town takes its name from the Saleys, the river which meanders through the centre past 17th and 18th century, half-timbered buildings. Make sure to take some time to stroll through the charming, flower filled back-streets and narrow alleyways, looking up every now and again to really appreciate the beautiful architecture.

THINGS TO DO & EXPLORING

If you are in search of sporting activities, golf, fishing, horse riding and tennis are all available locally and the area around Domaine Lavie is excellent for walking, running and cycling (although be warned, it's hilly!).

Within a short drive is the medieval town of Sauveterre de Béarn, the fortified town of Navarrenx and the Basque town of St Palais.

In just over an hour, you could be relaxing on the beach at Biarritz or St Jean de Luz or hiking in the foothills of the Pyrénées. Apart from the magnificent scenery, the mountains provide a paradise for walkers, birdwatchers, skiers and serious cyclists. For those with little legs or who don't want to walk, Le Petit Train d'Artouste, the highest train in Europe, or Le Petit Train de La Rhune, a cog-driven railway at Sare, will both take you on a breathtaking trip up the mountains with spectacular views.

If you enjoy water sports, there is white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking and SUP available with Experience Béarn at Montfort (11 miles) and 2 X Adventures at Sorde d'Abbaye (10 miles), both less than 25 minutes away. Alternatively, there is surfing at Biarritz, Hossegor or Seignosse beaches, amongst others, and there is a wide choice surf schools offering lessons should you wish.

For history lovers there are numerous châteaux, museums and caves to visit. And for wine lovers a visit to Domaine Lapeyre Guilhemas in Salies de Béarn is a must for a "dégustation" (tasting) of this independent wine producers's AOC Béarn wines. Within easy reach you will also find the vineyards of Jurançon, Irouléguy and Madiran, each with their own unique qualities to discover.

Alternatively, you could head to San Sebastian, just over the border in Spain, for Pintxos (tapas) … or you could spend a lazy day by the pool, having the occasional swim, enjoying the view, listening to the birdsong - and reading that book you've always been meaning to read!

It is one of our greatest pleasures to meet our guests and see them enjoy our home and our region of France as much as we do. GETTING HERE

By Air:
Biarritz is our closest airport and is approximately 40 minutes away. Flights to Biarritz are operated throughout the year by Ryanair (from London Stansted) and by Easyjet (from various airports) from mid-May to the end of August. Other airport options are Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees (60 minutes away), Bordeaux, Toulouse or Bilbao (all about 2 hours 15 minutes away). Unfortunately there are currently no direct flights from the UK into Pau-Pyrenees Airport (45 minutes away) although there are connections via Paris (Charles de Gaulle or Orly) with Air France.

By Ferry:
Bilbao and Santander in northern Spain are our two closest ferry ports, being approximately 2h45 (135 miles) and 3h30 (185 miles) away respectively. Brittany Ferries sail from Portsmouth to both Bilboa and Santander and from Plymouth to Santander. Further afield, other ferry options are St Malo (7h30/445 miles), Caen (8h/500 miles), Le Havre (8h40/520 miles) or Cherbourg (9h/550 miles)

By Car:
To make the most of your visit to this beautiful corner of France, a car really is essential. Many of our guests drive from the Eurotunnel/channel ports, either with or without an overnight stop. Driving time is approximately 10h30 (650 miles).

Domaine Lavie is situated 2.5km from the centre of Salies de Béarn and it is possible to walk to the shops and restaurants. However we don't advise it, especially if you have children with you, as there is not a pavement the whole way.

By Train:
The TGV from Paris Montparnasse will bring you to Orthez station, 20 minutes away, in as little as 4 hours. You can reserve a hire car from Ada.fr for collection from their local branch located 150m from the station (however do check their opening times are compatible with your arrival time - this is France!)

Detailed local directions will be emailed to you in good time before your arrival.

BOOKING YOUR STAY

A non-refundable deposit of 20% is required to confirm the booking. The balance, together with a refundable security deposit of £500, is due 6 weeks before arrival. The security deposit will be refunded within 14 days of departure, subject to our terms and conditions.
Reservations made within 4 weeks of your arrival date require full payment at the time of booking.
Taxe de Séjour (tourist tax) is included in the rental fee.
